Flight 1 - SERCIAL/TERRANTEZ (3 notes)

White - Fortified
1917 Barbeito Madeira Sercial Portugal, Madeira
91 points
A Sercial in the classic mode. Extremely acidic with a nose that almost burns the nostrils... you can almost smell the acidity. Very nice perfumed palate of dried flowers, nuts and an interesting scent of old wood. Outstanding length. Very good, but needs food. VERY GOOD.
White - Fortified
1903 Barbeito Madeira Sercial Portugal, Madeira
95 points
One of the best Sercials I've had the pleasure to taste. Light tan with a hint of green on the rim. A wonderful piercing nose that sears the hairs in your nose (in a good way). Multi-dimensional mouth, with burnt sugar, tea and assorted dried fruits. Ridiculously long finsh that gripped like a pit bull. OUTSTANDING!
White - Fortified
1870 Blandy's Madeira Terrantez Portugal, Madeira
92 points
Dark tan/brown in color. Lucsious molasses, nuts, figs, cognac, old wood and a slight medicinal note. Interesting sweet/sour sensations. VERY GOOD.

Flight 2 - VERDELHO (4 notes)

White - Fortified
1905 D'Oliveiras Madeira Verdelho Reserva Portugal, Madeira
93 points
Much better than my last sample of this wine... I suspect this was decanted longer. Figs, maple, caramel and a fresh, invigorating almost "wintergreen" note that really perked the wine up. Medium length. VERY GOOD.
White - Fortified
1890 D'Oliveiras Madeira Verdelho Reserva Portugal, Madeira
91 points
Round, soft and a bit on the sweeter side for Verdelho. Nice flavors of cocoa, coffee, caramel and spice. Nice wine, but falls a bit short on acid for me. VERY GOOD.
White - Fortified
1885 Lomelino Madeira Verdelho Portugal, Madeira
80 points
There is something off about this wne. While the underlying flavors are fine, there was a strong scent of stewed vegetable (brussel sprouts?) the dominated the wine. A bit short on the finish as well. BELOW AVERAGE.
White - Fortified
1882 Blandy's Madeira Verdelho Portugal, Madeira
89 points
Somewhat muted nose. Round and soft with elegant dried fruit flavors, but a bit simple overall. Clipped finish. Good, but nothing to rush out and acquire. GOOD.

Flight 3 - BOAL (3 notes)

White - Fortified
1922 D'Oliveiras Madeira Boal Reserva Portugal, Madeira
93 points
Wonderful array of flavors, but this wine suffered by it's (relative youth), being placed in a flight of wines averaging 180-200 years old. The youthful showed, with more fruit flavors relative to it's mates in the flight: orange peel, lime, and raisins. Wonderful balance, intensity, length and youthful drive. VERY GOOD.
White - Fortified
N.V. Henriques & Henriques Madeira Grand Old Bual Portugal, Madeira
96 points
Not dated, but circa 1800, rebottled several times. Amazing complexity and balance. Cognac, orange peel, toffee and autumnal spices: cinnamin, clove, allspice. Hints of tea. Elegance and power combined in the most uncanny way... wondeful persistance. The second best wine of the night. OUTSTANDING!
White - Fortified
1827 Quinta do Serrado Madeira Bual Portugal, Madeira
98 points
The wine of the tasting! Outstanding complexity with a cornicopia of flavors -- orange peel, tea, toffee, nuts, spice and even a hint of a cool menthol streak. Overwhelming depth and length. PROFOUND!

Flight 4 - BASTARDO (3 notes)

Red - Fortified
1927 Leacock Madeira Bastardo Portugal, Madeira
86 points
A bit of a muted nose. Strawberry, molasses and bullion. A bit of saline and old wood. Bitter finish. OK, but seemed a bit flat. GOOD.
Red - Fortified
1927 D'Oliveiras Madeira Bastardo Reserva Portugal, Madeira
89 points
This wine had quite a dry nose, almost like a Chinon. Chalky and mineraly with some dried red fruits and nut-skin. Nice bitterness to the finish. An intellectual rather than hedonistic wine. This is same wine as 1927 Adegas do Torreao, but bought and bottled later by D'Oliveira. GOOD.
Red - Fortified
1875 Cossart Gordon & Co. Madeira Bastardo Portugal, Madeira
92 points
Unusal lychee, mango and papaya flavors. Jammy cherry balanced by crunchy acids. Unctuous, sexy -- but a bit unusual. A guilty pleasure. VERY GOOD.

Flight 5 - MALVAZIA (2 notes)

White - Fortified
1885 Barbeito Madeira Malvasia Reserva Velha Portugal, Madeira
95 points
This wine was purchased by Barbeito from the Alfonso family and comes from the Cama dos Lobos vineyards. Butterscotch, molasses and honey. Hints of vanilla. Higher in acids than the 1895 D'Oliveira Malvazia (which makes it better, in my opinion). This wine is interestingly both contemplative and hedonistic. I could easily drink this all night without tiring. Lean (for Malvazia) and mean and long in the finish. OUTSTANDING.
White - Fortified
1895 D'Oliveiras Madeira Malvazia Reserva Portugal, Madeira
94 points
Nutty and figgy. Some maple and brown sugar with excellent acids. Unctuous and rich. Beautifully long and detailed finish. A wonderful example of the genre. VERY GOOD.

Flight 6 - DINNER (1 note)

Red
1990 Azienda Bricco Rocche (Ceretto) Barolo Bricco Rocche Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
89 points
Solid wine, a bit light and a bit ungiving. Either too young or the tannins are overtaking the fruit.
