Flight 1 (4 notes)

White
1990 Trimbach Riesling Cuvée Frédéric Emile France, Alsace
Yellow, remarkably light for a dry wine of this age. Little in the way of high toned secondary aromas until open for several hours. Full body, bigger and denser than the Clos Ste. Hune per my recollection. Dry, peach flavors, late lemon, fantastic acidity and soil, great length. Iconic wine that feels as though it still could withstand another decade of aging. Remarkable in every way.
White - Off-dry
1989 Trimbach Riesling Cuvée Frédéric Emile Vendanges Tardives France, Alsace
Bright, deep tulip yellow. Ripe stone fruit and orange peel, not honeyed at all and no petrol showing. Off dry, richer and fuller than the 1990 Frederic Emile. This went on and on for hours, working equally well with a duck dish and a non-sweetened dessert. Magnificent now, and it wouldn't surprise me if it were just as strong in 10 years.

The remainder is holding up like a champ after a night in the fridge with more apricot and vanilla bean.
Red
1989 Paul Jaboulet Aîné Hermitage La Chapelle France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
Red center with minimal fading. Some sediment. Crackling tart red fruit and swirling wintergreen and fennel. Medium weight, exceptionally elegant for La Chapelle. Superb mix of crisp fruit, earth, and green tones supported by excellent acidity and light tannins. I had not tasted this in many years, but this bottle was showing superbly and very "Chave-like" in its savory complexity rather than overt power. In my recollection, less dense and ripe than the 1990.

White - Off-dry
1989 Dominikaner-Keller Kaseler Dominikanerberg Riesling Auslese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Deep yellow. Clean, botrytis-free aromas of cut yellow apple. Medium weight, only moderate sweetness. Wonderful, straight ahead Auslese that has aged extremely well. Gentle, soil-inflected finish. Excellent and in no danger of decline.
