Domaine Michel Lafarge Vertical Tasting

Introduction

It's pretty rare to actually get to taste an assortment of Lafarge wines in one sitting... these wines do not need to be offered to taste in order to completely sell out on release. So it was a pretty nice opportunity to try a variety of bottles from 2011-2014, together in one sitting. We were guided by Timothy Davey who works for Becky Wasserman & Co. He is incredibly knowledgeable about these wines and gave amazing insight into what was on offer today. Thank you E&R and Timothy for this killer opportunity!

Slightly stewed, ripe aroma. Smells like over ripe, softening strawberries. Similar forward fruit on the palate, but here it's darker in complexion. Thick, dark fruit for a Volay, but the texture is nice and round. Spicy, rich, ripe fruit carries into the finish. Pretty acid is here as well that give it a good lingering flavoring sensation. Good spice here, but the ripeness is a bit much, and the wine lacks some depth.

Much more involved nose than the 2014. Very nice depth and diversity, showing pretty earth tones, gravel, and a very pretty floral streak running through it. The palate is very very pretty on entrance, showing some lighter, more lifted fruit notes here. Nice spice from the acid and pretty fruit is integrated throughout. Lovely balace of acidity and soil spice on the finish. Very pretty, elegant, and balanced.

Some sappy tree components on the nose, coupled with rich, pretty ripe berry tones. Modestly sweet, ripe fruit enters on the palate. That sweet fruit holds with you as you swirl it around the mouth, offering an elegant palate texture. It feels ripe, but the structure is well in check with the fruit. This is also showing some of that tree sap note I found on the nose. Pretty finish and voluminous dial up with more of that lovely soil notion.

Sweet, ripe fruit. Very pretty berry notes and killer balance expressed here. Rich and ripe on the oh so elegant and pretty palate. Really lovely fruit intensity and a lovely tension. Wow, surprisingly generous with its fruit on the pretty, elegant finish, expressing wonderful acidity and intensity. Very pretty and that acid just caresses the mouth for a minute into the finish.

Very different than the 2013. This is offering strong, rich and ripe fruit on the nose. Beautiful, but unique on the table. More soil, earth, and some cellar aromas are present as well. Very rich and large in the mouth. Sweet fruit is present on a round, smooth texture. Soft, slight barrel funk present here as well. Rich soil tones, with a green herbal component pokes through. Some stemmy notes on the finish (though none are present in this wine), more green notes of herbs, and quite a lot of spice. Tart and rich, puckering slightly bitter notes are what linger into the finish.

Quieter, lighter aromas than what preceded it, but still very fruit forward and quite pretty. Soft, pretty palate entry, but what comes apparent quite quickly is the very, very elegant, and balanced stroke of this wine. Very pretty, soft ripe strawberry fruit as the primary flavor. The finish is very impressive, with a beautiful dial up of integrated acid and these fruit/soil mix. This wine is incredibly mineral driven, but it's so wonderfully balanced with the fruit and structure that I'm a bit taken aback by its presence. Wonderful! My wine of the night.

Much darker than the '13, this guy is also expressing riper fruit aroma. It's quite thick and dark, actually. Sweet, thick fruit on palate entry, and immediately becomes grippy with tannic strength. That said, here the fruit is actually quite compact, though certainly sweet. Quite rich and round in texture. Sweet fruit on the thick, voluminous, grippy finish. Still feels quite compact though. This needs some years to soften, but I do think will remain pretty.

Soft, sweet, slightly green, herbal inflected nose. Soft, rich, sweet fruit gets expressed on the palate. Really nice and round, with some bitter green notes present as well. More bitter green notes on the finish, which has plenty of exuberant acid present as well.

The quietest nose so far tonight... a bit muted, with just the slightest bit of pretty, dark fruited tones poking through. The palate is rich and big, and very well composed, which was surprising considering that tight nose. Certainly has some sizable fruit, but it does have beautiful integration of structural components. This is very big and young on the palate right now and needs a lot of time. The finish then transitions back to being tight as nails, basically just expressing its large scale and structure. Again, you can pinpoint all those structural components, but they are just not showing you anything more than their presence. I believe this will be very good down the road. Score is, as always, for consumption today, where it's a little hard.

Tight on the nose, but some vigorous swirling does coax this guy out a bit. Quite soft texture on palate entry, and boy is it ever immediately elegant and pretty! Very well integrated at present, with lovely, round texture and an overall impression of grace. Gorgeous roundness on the finish as well, with integrated acidity and mineral inflected fruit. Massive structure on the finish and after a few seconds it locks down hard again, only leaving with you the sensation of its structure and those fruit notes disappear. Again though, this is going to be a gorgeous wine down the road... just needs a decade+ before actually diving in. 92+

Rich, round and sweet notes on the thickly fruited nose. Still, showing a ton of elegance and depth on the nose. Much more powerful and deep than the 2014 or 2013 on the nose. Gorgeous palate entry, showing very nice balance. Lovely integrated of fruit and structure here too. Very pretty stuff. Killer dial up and pretty integration of fruit and all structural components on the finish, as well. Very intense and interesting.

This offers a green, herbaceous nose, and that note carries onto the palate, which is puckering and lean, showing some green tannin. It still expresses its elegance and pretty side despite the green flavors. The finish is the prettiest part yet, though, showing more fruit (though still green toned). Lovely structure holds all that in place.
