Introduction

These wines were tasted as part of the Southern California WSET Level 2 class instruction.

Flight 1 - Week 1 (4 notes)

Introductory wines offered to help with guidance to the WSET SAT methodology of tasting.

White
2017 Kris Pinot Grigio Delle Venezie Italy, Delle Venezie
84 points
Medium acidity, low body wine featuring green apple, peach and white flower aromas. Crisp green apple on the palate followed by a short finish. Simple.
White
2017 Lynmar Estate Chardonnay USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
88 points
Oakey, buttery aromas and flavors currently overwhelm the tropical notes and primary components of the wine. The medium acidity and body add to the lengthy finish of toast, spice and mineral notes. Perhaps in a dumb phase.
Red
2016 Domaine Paul Autard Côtes du Rhône France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône
89 points
Pale, medium ruby color. Lovely savory earth nose of dried cherries, clove, anise, tobacco leaf and strawberries. Well balanced palate of cherries on the attack followed by a moderately intense herbal finish and some heat. Moderate tannins, so drink now or over next few years.
Red
2016 Titus Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley
90 points
Deep, dark purple color. Expressive, complex nose of chocolate, blueberry compote, violets, black currant and mint. Black plum and vanilla dominate the youthful palate and chewy, tannic finish.

Flight 2 - Week 2 (8 notes)

Focused on side by side regional comparisons of Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz.

Red
2015 Domaine Pierre Gelin Gevrey-Chambertin Clos des Meixvelles France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin
90 points
Not sure this is the exact Gelin G-C that we had during class, but it sounds like it. Currently, I found this to be sour and lean with loads of mineral drive n tart red fruit. While not overly assertive, the nose has delicious aromas of strawberry, cherry, rose petals, liquorice and clove. Certainly something that will reward cellaring. Can easily see this being rated higher.
Red
2016 Long Meadow Ranch Pinot Noir USA, California, North Coast, Anderson Valley
89 points
Pale ruby becoming garnet in color. Medium aromatics of black cherry cola, sarsaparilla, dried herbs. Touch overripe fruit on the palate. A nice drink but as good as it will get.
Red
2016 Leoness Cellars Zinfandel Hui Vineyard USA, California, South Coast, Temecula Valley
88 points
Medium Ruby color with an expressive, jammy cherry, vanilla, and baking spice nose. Full bodied, medium acid and drying tannins; Dark chocolate covered cherries, vanilla and black pepper.
Red
2016 Château Laplagnotte-Bellevue France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
90 points
This deep ruby wine flashes a fantastic merlot driven nose of cigar box, cedar, pepper, smoke, bell pepper and red plums. Flavors of bright red fruit, bitter chocolate, coffee grinds to go along with dusty, drying tannins. An interesting wine from a new-to-me Right Bank producer.
Red
2017 Duckhorn Vineyards Merlot Decoy Sonoma County USA, California, Sonoma County
88 points
Tasted side-by-side with a right bank Bordeaux and it held its own while being quite different. This is produced to be more fruit forward, smooth and approachable now. Cherry and dried cranberries in the nose and palate. Eucalyptus, minty espresso, cocoa and some oaky tannins.
Red
2016 Château Haut-Bailly France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
93 points
Our WSET teacher must have splurged on us or she got a screaming deal. Deep ruby, richly aromatic, and serious tannins. I loved the savory earth quality to the wine - olives, tilled soil, minerals, cedar, roasted herbs - to go with the black and red plums, pepper, and char. No rush to drink this as it will easily improve in a decade.

Red
2015 Cave de Tain l'Hermitage Crozes-Hermitage France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Crozes-Hermitage
88 points
Garnet in color, subtle aromas of bacon, smoke, cloves, wet stones, and wild raspberries. Full bodied with tart black fruits on the palate. A short finish displaying dried herbs, anise, liquorice and roast game. Some acid, some tannin... not sure how long I would hold this.
Red
2015 Langmeil Shiraz Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
84 points
There was a distinct sharpie smell that was really overwhelming the blueberry jam, mint, baking spices, and black liquorice aromas. The palate felt "manufactured" - sweet with jammy black fruits, vanilla, coconut and an uncomfortable, bitter finish.

Flight 3 - Week 3 (12 notes)

Focused on french varietals and intro to whites. I brought in a magnum of 2000 La Nerthe CdP to compare to a 2016 CdP. Another student brought in wines from his winery, Miramonte.

Red
2016 Domaine Paul Autard Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
91 points
A deep ruby color with cheerful, fruity primary aromas of dark cherry leading the way. A rich raspberry palate has some black liquorice, tar, white pepper and baking spice notes. Tannins are a bit course which seems to present a high alcohol taste. Definitely something to let develop over the next decade.
Red
2000 Château La Nerthe Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
90 points
Have held on to this until the exact right time. Served to my WSET class to compare alongside a 2016 Autard CdP. Educational experience as the Autard was stylistically similar to what I remember this young La Nerthe being.

Pale garnet; tertiary aromas taking hold here - mushroom, spice, dry cherry, bacon fat and smoked sausage. Palate still holds some lively dried strawberry/cherry fruit, meaty, white pepper, absolutely no tannin left and a touch tart. Lingers nicely. Still drank well several hours after opening. Drank from magnum so I would suggest drinking now.
Red
2015 Mas Doix Priorat Salanques Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
89 points
Deep ruby; There is a pronounced rubbery, overly ripe aroma to go with the black cherries, spice, cinnamon and clove. The thick palate has some very ripe tannins that don't let much show through other than a grapey, fennel, chocolate oak flavors. Needs some patience.
Red
2014 Domaine Blain Côte de Brouilly Les Jumeaux France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Côte de Brouilly
87 points
Pale ruby; There is a pleasing candied watermelon, strawberry fruit that seems to play well with the wine's earthy, musty and floral aromas. And there is even a touch of cheese rind in the nose. Kinda wild! The juicy acids don't overwhelm the light mouthfeel and provide some degree of balance to the palate. A simple finish with cherry licorice, herbs and roast.
Red
2010 Martinez Bujanda Rioja Viña Bujanda Gran Reserva Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja
89 points
Deep ruby with expressive aromas of kirsch, chocolate, anise, black cherries and wet leaves. Extended aging has smoothed out tannins to reveal dried cherries, leather, tar, chalk, minerals and vanilla. A lively, medium plus acidity provides some length to the finish. Drink
Red
2016 Catena Malbec Argentina, Mendoza
88 points
Medium garnet with very simple dark plums, violets and earthy aromas. Full bodied, good structure, yet mildly interesting notes of dark plummy fruit, chocolate, black pepper and roasted herbs. A good mid-week wine that won't offend anyone. Well priced and certainly had a lot of fans during the WSET class. Very "New World".
White
2017 Jim Barry Riesling The Lodge Hill Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley
78 points
This was... an interesting and awkward experience. Pale lemon, with a limited, yet hyper focused petrol, floral, pear nose. I like that. But the excessively sour palate was too much for me. Dry, high acid. Maybe a touch of oyster shell in there??? So sour.
White
2018 Heinz Eifel Riesling Kabinett Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
87 points
Pale lemon with a reticent nose of pear, green apple, white flowers and wet stones. Moderate sweetness and acidity; simple, clean, light mouthfeel showing lemons and minerals.
White
2017 Benoit Gautier Vouvray France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray
88 points
Pale lemon showing moderate aromas of apple, honey, petrol and fresh blossoms. Green apple fruit with touches of lemon pith, white pepper and minerals linger on the sharp finish. A refreshing summer wine.

White - Sweet/Dessert
2015 Château La Fleur d'Or France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
90 points
Pale gold; Rich honeyed nose, orange marmalade with saffron like spice hints. Intensely concentrated, syrupy pineapple and tropical fruit, clove, almond and spice on the palate. A medium plus acidity keeps the wine feeling too sweet or flabby. A solid, young sauternes that should develop into a better wine as it matures and tertiary aspects take hold.
Red
2018 Miramonte Bin #380 USA, California, South Coast, Temecula Valley
84 points
Blend of Grenache and Cinsault. Pale ruby, full of ripe strawberry, watermelon and a whiff of whole cluster fermentation. Light in the mouth, soft, approachable but tastes flat. Needs some acid.
Red
2015 Miramonte Estate Syrah Miramonte Vineyards USA, California, South Coast, Temecula Valley
83 points
Medium ruby, loaded with candied rasberry aromas along with some coconut and cream. Smooth drinking due to extended oak treatment but too much dill. Fruit tastes green and palate is uneven due to that oak. Trademark black pepper finish.

Flight 4 (14 notes)

White
2016 Barone Pizzini Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico Superiore Pievalta Italy, Marche, Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico Superiore
84 points
Pale lemon; Pear, lemon, dry herbs, almond and toast on the nose. Unappealing palate of bitter fennel, cut grass and almond. Medium bodied, high acid.
White
2018 Leoness Cellars Viognier USA, California, South Coast, Temecula Valley
86 points
Pale lemon in color; the pungent vegetal aroma eclipses the finer floral, green tea, guava and stone fruit aspects. Low acid, medium bodied with a waxy mouthfeel revealing white peach, oyster shell, salt and white pepper.
Red
2017 Ceretto Barolo Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
92 points
So much going on with this ruby color wine. Intense aromas of dry black cherries, mushrooms, tea, rose, violets and herbs. High acidity, chewy tannins, medium bodied. Tar, black liquorice, minerals, leather and anise all check in on the palate. A really good, long term wine.
Red
2013 Castello di Bossi Chianti Classico Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG
87 points
Ruby colored; Pungent herb aromas seem to dominate the subtler dry cherry, rose petal, and clove. Dry red fruit and high acid leave a high sour feeling on the tongue. Finishing flavors of stones, herbs, and black tea notes only add to that feeling.
Red
2015 Secondo Marco Valpolicella Classico Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Valpolicella Classico
85 points
Ruby colored; Red cherry and red plum, blueberry, roasted herbs and tomato leaf on the nose. Simple, yet tasty flavors of tart bing cherries, leather, black pepper and coffee bean. Light body, medium acid, low tannin. Pizza wine.
White
2017 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis France, Burgundy, Chablis
89 points
Pale lemon in color; laser focused nose of tart green apples, citrus, minerals. Med-light body, medium plus acidity; crisp citrus and apple fruit on the palate and a tart, mineral driven finish. Chablis.
White
2017 Suavia Soave Classico Italy, Veneto, Soave Classico
86 points
Bright and fresh green apple aromas, with subtle hits of citrus, peach and chamomile tea. More tart green apple on the palate, med bodied, high acid. Finishes with some minerals and almond. Simple, refreshing.
White
2016 Cantina Tramin Gewürztraminer Italy, Trentino-Alto Adige, Alto Adige, Alto Adige - Südtirol
86 points
Burnt rubber and potpourri in the nose, along with honey, nuts and perfume. Full body, low acid, lychee fruit with a dry finish of almonds, dried apricots, spice and wood. Wish it had more acid.
White
2017 Bodegas La Val Albariño Rías Baixas Finca de Arantei Spain, Galicia, Rías Baixas
88 points
Pale lemon color, orange peel and citrus fruit, minerals and vanilla in the nose. Medium body, dry, high acid, lemon zest and a mouthwatering lingering salty finish.
White
2016 Léon Beyer Pinot Gris France, Alsace
91 points
Love the red apple, cream and sweet orange marmalade on this pale lemon colored Alsatian Pinot Gris. Fuller bodied with herbal/grassy flavors, ripe melon, almond and touch of spearmint. It lacks a touch of acidity. A very nice, unique and enjoyable wine that I would not normally try. And now I want to try a few more.
White
2018 Allan Scott Sauvignon Blanc New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough
89 points
Our WSET teach described the wine's flavor as "cheap and watery" and that it fails to live up to the New Zealand SB aromas of grass, herbs, green pepper, citrus, grapefruit and papaya. Personally, I would tend to say the the flavors of apples, citrus, passion fruit and minerals are dialed down compared to other NZ SBs I have had over the years... and that subtlety was appreciated by me. I found it to be a rich mouthfeel with some lingering zesty acidity.
White
2016 Shaw and Smith Chardonnay M3 Vineyard Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Adelaide Hills
90 points
Pale lemon in color; A simple nose of petrol, herbs, flowers and oak but delivers. A velvety, yet thick mouthfeel of honey, vanilla, spice, white pepper, apples and lemon-lime. Dry, medium to full bodied, medium to low acidity. Something to drink and enjoy now.

White
2017 Domaine Alain Chavy Puligny-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet
87 points
Pale lemon in color; Secondary notes of cheese and pastry take precedent over the lemon and green apple aromas. Due to minimal oak treatment, the palate feels waxier and creamier than expected right after trying a Fevre Chablis. More stone fruits (peach and apricot) than green fruits, but some apple is still there. A rising acidity on the finish. A good burgundy, but the unoaked Chablis style.
White
2017 Familia Zuccardi Torrontés Serie A Argentina, Salta
85 points
Totally unfamiliar with this grape. Pale lemon; chalky white peach, perfume and lavender aromas. Interesting flavors of sardines, black licorice and flint on the bitter palate. Medium acid, medium bodied. Not a fan.

Flight 5 (8 notes)

White - Sparkling
2014 Besserat de Bellefon Champagne Brut France, Champagne
91 points
Lots of youthful energy in this. Aromas of lies, cheese, white flowers and stone fruits. These carry over to the delicate palate while adding additional notes of honey, almonds and star anise.
Rosé - Sparkling
N.V. Vinergia Cava Brut Camps d'Estels Spain, Cava
85 points
Aromas of lemon, green apple and a cola/root beer kind of note. Tropical fruit, mango and melon with medium acidity and ginger and cinnamon on the finish.
White - Sparkling
2018 Vignaioli di S. Stefano (Ceretto) Moscato d'Asti Italy, Piedmont, Asti, Moscato d'Asti
89 points
Delicate and elegant. Creamy, fizzy palate that reminds me of applesauce and nuts. Very aromatic.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Adria Vini Prosecco Le Dolci Colline Italy, Veneto, Veneto IGT
84 points
Light and simple. Very faint nose, dry, soft palate of apples, honey, peaches and melon. Good, lightweight aperitif.
White - Sparkling
N.V. South Coast Winery Brut USA, California, South Coast, Temecula Valley
86 points
100% Chard. Tropical aromas, lemon in color. Dry, high acidity, herbal, green apple, ginger and sour lemon. Tank fermented.
Red - Fortified
2014 Quinta de la Rosa Porto Late Bottled Vintage Portugal, Douro, Porto
84 points
Fresh fruit, ready to consume. Others will enjoy this more than I.
Red - Fortified
N.V. Quinta de la Rosa Porto 10 Year Old Tawny Portugal, Douro, Porto
88 points
Medium flavor and intensity. Still, an enjoyable 10 year.
White - Fortified
N.V. Bodegas Hidalgo Jerez-Xérès-Sherry Fino Spain, Andalucía, Jerez-Xérès-Sherry
Not at all my style of wine. Tastes like dried oak and watered down, bland whiskey. Bless y'all that love this! Must be a very acquired taste. Thus no rating from me.
