Monthly Men's Wine Dinner

2120 Restaurant, Seattle

Tasted August 27, 2019 by Quiet Lion with 118 views

Introduction

We were happy to be back in business after we skipped July due to scheduling issues. Man, that pork-belly roulade at 2120 is so good. Wines were bagged and tasted blind.

Flight 1 (5 notes)

Red
2005 Domaine de Marcoux Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
94 points
Three-hour double decant. This showed beautifully at the start with balanced, full-bodied dark fruit and au jus on the palate. It seemed to develop some Brett after a while and went downhill. I have had bad luck with Marcoux. My #3 of 5 and the group's #4.
Red
2007 Merryvale Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley USA, California, Napa Valley
91 points
Pop and pour. Medium body, dark fruit, sous bois. With some air became more balanced and the tannins got chewier while some black-cherry notes appear. I have been decanting these Napa Cabs with 10 years or so of age two hours before drinking, which we didn't get a chance to do here or it may have showed better. My #5 of 5 and the group's #2.
Red
2013 Cabaud Cabernet Sauvignon Benedictions USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville
93 points
Pop and pour. Lovely, unmistakable Napa fruit with a palate dominated by cassis and powdered sugar. I like this winery although I prefer the Mon Hommage. My #4 of 5 and the group's WOTN.
Red
2013 Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
94 points
Decanted and served. This really shone with two hours in the decanter and the rating reflects that showing at the end of dinner. Very well integrated, medium-plus body, round fruit, medium acid. Lovely Brunello. My WOTN and the group's #3 of 5.

Red
2012 Northstar Red Blend USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Walla Walla Valley
94 points
Decanted and served. Young-tasting Walla-Walla blend with delicious ripe fruit. My #2 of 5 and the group's #5 although the rankings were very close and varied.

Closing

People were all over the map in their favorites tonight but it was all good and we discovered some good QPR values.

My ranking:
1. 2013 Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona Brunello di Montalcino ($47)
2. 2012 Northstar Red Blend ($44)
3. 2005 Domaine de Marcoux Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes ($130)
4. 2013 Cabaud Cabernet Sauvignon Benedictions ($107)
5. 2007 Merryvale Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley ($51)

The group's ranking:
1. 2013 Cabaud Cabernet Sauvignon Benedictions ($107)
2. 2007 Merryvale Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley ($51)
3. 2013 Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona Brunello di Montalcino ($47)
4. 2005 Domaine de Marcoux Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes ($130)
5. 2012 Northstar Red Blend ($44)

Brunellos aren't wines I have a lot of experience with but I always seem to like them. Maybe I'll have to explore more of them. I've been to Merryvale, across the street from Gott's Roadside, and had a nice tasting experience. Northstar is unfamiliar to me and this particular bottle doesn't seem to be available online. Anyway we all enjoyed these and look forward to next time.
