Summer Pavilion @ Ritz Carlton

J is turning 40th! Another group of friends that have been drinking / sharing together for more than 10yrs. We started with a 2009 Cedric Bouchard Ursules, still very youthful and zen likes. Then we move on to a serious flight of white and red burgundy with two birth year wines: 1979 Mount Pleasant Hunter White Burgundy (rich, matured, alive albeit a touch simple) and 1979 Cantenac Brown. The showstopper tonight is no doubt the 02 Mugnier Fuees & 99 Leroy Santenots. The lobster rice is to die for! Great night!

Flight 1 - Flight 1: White (2 notes)

2006 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
This has really lovely complex, expressive aromas of melted butter, light ginger spice, honeysuckle and ripe yellow fruits. Very good acidity entry for a 2006 with lemon, lemon oil and ripe fruits. Lovely saline complexity. Everything is great except the hollow mid palate though gaining back in life toward the finish, it is still sorta let down and didn't show the pedigree of a Perrieres.
2004 Château de Puligny-Montrachet Chevalier-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
High toned, very good depth on the nose. Saline, tropical fruits but with coldness in it, love the orange peel aromas here. Lovely minerality throughout, with the discrete and restrained elegance as a Chevalier should be. The wine continues to evolve in the glass and showing broader spectrum of fruits while still maintaining the precision. Nice length. A smaller scale Chevalier that still carry the identity and best of all, no premox.

Flight 2 - Flight 2: Red (2 notes)

2001 Domaine Louis Remy Clos de la Roche France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru
Opened a night before. This is showing superbly well, on both nose and palate. I love the Darjeeling Tea note here, intermixed w soft blue and darker fruits, forest floor and touch of smoked bacon. Silky smooth on the palate with nice energy, the tannin is very much fully resolved, pretty complete with medium complexity and length.
2002 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Fuées France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
WOW, just WOW. The complex, ultra pure and perfume aromatic profile is to die for, I can sniff this all day! Perfectly ripened cherry, rose water intermixed with morning forest and great acid core, utterly captivating. The palate has no problem to match the nose. Such freshness, purity with silky tannin, rich fruits, dry extract all in perfect harmony. Great textural richness, elegant and weightless. Umami laden aftertaste.

Flight 3 - Flight 3: Red (2 notes)

1999 Domaine Leroy Volnay 1er Cru Santenots-Du-Milieu France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
Opened for 10hours prior to dinner. Such seductive and captivating nose, the rose petal, sweet ripe red fruits, umami, brown sugar, gentle spices were highly expressive. Incredible richness and concentration on the palate yet with good freshness, energy and restraint elegance with fine grained, grippy tannin. Superbly long finish. This shows much influence from the maker. As good as it is, the purity is not at the same level of the Mugnier Fuees. Price wise? hmm....
2009 Maison Leroy Côte de Nuits Villages France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Côte de Nuits Villages
Very good freshness here, but leaner and smaller scale than the Savigny. However the underlying material is pretty good with good purity and no rough edge which is showing at the Santenots. Was surprised this is a 2009, expected more richness / power from the vintage. Served right after the Santenots which might be the reason.

Flight 4 - Flight 4: Red (1 note)

1999 Domaine Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques Vieille Vigne France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
The nose is not as clean, airy as the Fourrier today, some wood, a lots of mushroom lots of mushroom, dried fruits which is not to my preference. Good acidity and tannin grip, a bit rough and lacks a bit of fruits and energy here. Good length and powerful.
