The Kenwood, Mpls, MN

Introduction

Making a return appearance for the second time in 48 hours to the Kenwood proved to be a pleasant evening. We had a group of 12 with a rather intersting mix of wines and the menu was a mix of highlights from Tuesday and new dishes. I don't really ever get tired of the Kenwood frankly.

Flight 1 (3 notes)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Burlot Nahé Champagne Grande Réserve Brut Verzy France, Champagne
89 points
Light gold color. Drank a small pour. There's some oxidation on the nose to start, tight nose with apple skin, subtle. The palate is more bold, offering ginger, sourdough, lemon and grapefruit on a foamy mousse. Fairly intense on the palate, just a bit awkward.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Henriot Champagne Brut Souverain France, Champagne
92 points
Medium gold color. Drank a glass over 20 minutes. This was nice, nose shows light toast, almond, dough, mineral and white fruits. The palate has grilled pear, bread, great orchard fruits, full bodied and lively acidity with good energy and definition. I liked this alot tonight. 91+ to 92pts.
White - Sparkling
2002 Pascal Doquet Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Le Mesnil-sur-Oger France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
94 points
Light medium gold color. Small glass over 30 minutes. Very yeasty on the nose and palate, apple, deep with nicely aged character, golden fruit, chalk, just a hint of oxidative notes, lemon, apple and hazelnut. Very complex and thoughtful. This aged very nicely and is likely hitting peak drinking now. Should be good for another 3 to 5 years anyway.

Flight 2 (2 notes)

White
2014 Sherwin Family Vineyards Chardonnay USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros
91 points
Light gold color. Small glass over 30 minutes. I liked this, nice brine on the nose, mineral and citrus. The palate shows oak, full bodied, deep on the palate, citrus, light vanillin, but just a little flabby.
Rosé
2017 Domaine Tempier Bandol Rosé France, Provence, Bandol
92 points
Pale salmon color. Drank a glass over 30 minutes plus - from magnum. Wow, this nose always just gets me, filled with Mistral breezes and sea air, passion fruit, peach, mango, and floral notes with spice too. The palate is complex as well; peach, wispy ocean and earthy minerality, passionfruit, strawberry. Long and glowing, the only thing missing was a 80 degree outdoor location.

Flight 3 (3 notes)

Red
2009 Rhys Pinot Noir Alpine Vineyard USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains
91 points
Medium red color. PNP, drank a small glass over 30 minutes. This was good, orange peeel, citrus and deep berry on the nose. The palate is rather astringent and you get that sense on the nose too, black cherry, dark berries, spice and a touch of cola accented by orange zest.
Red
2011 Kutch Pinot Noir McDougall Ranch USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
91 points
Medium dark red color. Small glass over 30 minutes. This was riper than the Rhys, full bodied and higher toned, cranberry, pomegranate, dry earth and bit woodsy. Prefer the '09 Rhys Alpine a bit.
Red
2012 Aston Pinot Noir Estate USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
88 points
Dark red color. PNP, small glass over 30 minutes. This was an odd duck. Came off more like a big California pinot that had a healthy dose of syrah added in. Blackberry, blueberry, tar, savory, odd spices and a lot of umami. Just weird, and not something I'd look for in pinot noir.

Flight 4 (1 note)

Red
2007 J. Vidal-Fleury Côte-Rôtie la Chatillonne Côte Blonde France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
92 points
Very dark red color. 90 minute double decant; small glass over an hour. This started off really green and herbal on the nose. As this slowly opens up that green fades away and by 15 minutes was all but gone. Once that occurred we had a pretty good wine. Roasted meat, savory nose, dark fruits, a little scorched earth, white pepper, and rosemary. The palate is fairly full bodied, lots of earth, dark fruits, hints of blueberry, scorched earth, meats, and pepper.

Flight 5 (3 notes)

Red
1988 Château Gruaud Larose France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
95 points
Dark red color. PNP, drank a small glass over an hour. Geez, this was a super bottle. The nose just oozes pencil shavings, moss, soil, dank basement, and a lovely floral perfume and mixed dried berries. The palate also oozes the pencil notes, tobacco leaf, wood spice, dried dark berries, funk and cassis notes. Long and resolved with just a note of blue fruit. Lovely, mature Bordeaux from a classic producer. Love this. Plenty left here.
Red
2000 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
92 points
Very dark red/purple. One hour double decant and a little slow ox time after. Drank a small glass over an hour. Full bodied, lots of dark fruits, juicy, horse barn, truffles, wood and touch of heat, cassis and blackberry and a little blood orange. This took a while to come around, but it has a lot promise. Needs a good dose of air or a few more years to really show its stuff.

Red
2004 Château Léoville Las Cases France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
92 points
Very dark red/purple color. Double decanted for 45 minutes. Small glass over 45 minutes. Dark fruits, good acid, lots of oak still, blackberry and blue fruits. Drinking rather young as I'd expect for LLC, but this is gonna be better. 92(+)pts.

Flight 6 (2 notes)

Red
2008 Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon Estate USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains
90 points
Small glass, very late in the evening. Ripe, black and blue fruits, spicy. I was thinking this would be further along and more elegant tonight. Didn't quite strike me that way, but could just be its positioning. Good but expecting more nuance and complexity.
Red
2010 Altamura Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley
87 points
Very dark purple color. Small glass at the end of the night. PNP. This was not working for me, especially at this point of the evening. Getting hit with all the alcohol and oak, just was too much. Blowsy, bold blackberry liqueur palate. Obviously a lot of people like this style, I'm just not one of them - at least tonight.

Flight 7 (1 note)

Red - Sweet/Dessert
1997 Romano Dal Forno Recioto della Valpolicella Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Recioto della Valpolicella
93 points
Small pour over 20 minutes plus. Rather tantalizing, ripe dark berries, blackberry cobbler, plum, spice, raisin, richly textured and velvety, good length and acid to balance the sweet ripe fruits. Fun; a little goes a long way.

Flight 8 (1 note)

White - Sweet/Dessert
2007 Château de Malle France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
89 points
Small pour. Dense, orange marmalade, sharply spiced, cinnamon, ripe baked apple, medium bodied, a little bitter.
