#18-18, 7.5% abv. Slightly herbal nose, with some tart green elements. A nice tart bit of fruit on the palate and there's good electricity here. Plenty of lovely acidity and some delicious fruit. Despite all the lovely elements here, it's not quite the same intensity as the 2016, not that I'd ever turn down a glass.

I loved where this was right when I opened it; there was this awesome intense black fruit and just the right amount of sweaty animal funk. But as this got more air, it got stinkier and stinkier, showing quite a bit of brett. I like the overall density and amount of material here, but the stink gets a little bit intense for me.

I had pretty high hopes for this bottle, especially given the corked bottle I had last time I was down in Indianapolis, but I think I may well have to chalk this up to the standard LdH inconsistency. The nose shows a bit of coffee and a fair bit of brown spice, but the palate is just super high acid and seems surprisingly lean and high acid.

#13-02, 10.5% abv, 2130. Heady and explosive, with tons of green herbs, and a tropical note of mangos and passion fruit. The palate is moderately sweet and there is so much density and concentration in here. It's clearly a HGS wine, with its Cronenberg intensity. For my taste, this is probably at, or just slightly past peak -- with some of the sugar drying out, this will lose its exuberance and balance for the relatively higher alcohol. Pretty damn delicious stuff.

#21-99, 10% abv. I'm glad we didn't open this with the 2001; this bottle would have blown the 2001 out of the water. This doesn't have that green streak that the 2001 has, and instead is just all exotic and tropical. A massive dose of sweet mangos on the nose, with a boatload of fresh herbs as well. The palate is a fair bit sweeter than the 2001, but it is incredibly balanced. This also doesn't have the alcoholic heft of the 2001; it doesn't have that heady feel, and certainly doesn't feel as hot either. At peak now.

Dark in colour; and it is similarly reflected on the nose, with a very intense meaty quality. Not particularly funky, instead this is extraordinarily clean. There's this intensity to the fruit here that makes me think this was made from those small shot berries. The palate initially was a little thin and showed a bit of rust, but that actually seemed to disappear with air. Tons of tannin, probably a function of both this particular wine, and the vintage. If more CdP were like this, I'm pretty sure I'd be drinking more of it...

Served double blind. The nose definitely shows a little bit of brine and olive, but also a nice bit of earth and meatiness. The acidity on the palate is fairly high, and based on that, I guessed 1993 Gevrey. I suppose it's pretty obvious the syrah notes once this was revealed. Surprisingly high acidity and a really nice lightness here; quite different from the modernist beasts that these wines are today. With air the nose did pick up a little bit of coffee as well.

2013 Vincent Dancer Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Tête du Clos France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
93 points
Not as reduced and backwards as some of the lesser Dancer wines I've had; this is far more broad and sappy, with tons of stone and orchard fruit. The palate, too, is incredibly sappy and shows a really awesome concentration of fruit, but at the same time, an almost out-of-balance amount of 2013 chardonnay acidity. Really taut and lean; I'm not confident this has the amount of material for aging for the long haul given that crazy acidity, but this is a pretty impressive wine right now.

1995 Marc Sorrel Hermitage France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

Weird and slightly spritzy on the nose, with a hint of coffee too. The palate seems to have undergone either bacterial spoilage or a bit of a secondary fermentation.

1995 Marc Sorrel Hermitage Le Gréal France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

A super disappointing showing of this wine; I love Sorrel's wines, but this bottle just never showed up to the party. The nose has a bit of coffee and seems generally pretty reticent; it's not terrible but there's not much to love here either. Pretty much the same story on the palate; a little blocky and inelegant. Just not really there, unfortunately.

#35-84, 10% abv. Ever so slightly corked, but the material here is absolutely outstanding...

#21-99, 8% abv. From half-bottle. Yeah, this is pretty much a BA-lite. The intensity on this wine is just off the charts. So sweet and botrytized, with a lovely caramel tinge and a massive dose of brown spice. Incredibly complex and sweet, with a honeyed element on the palate. Unequivocally young, this is a wine that still has a very, very long way to go.

1994 Fonseca Porto Vintage Portugal, Douro, Porto

Wow -- this may well be one of the youngest Ports I've ever tasted, but man, is it splendid. The nose here is exuberant, with heaps of black fruit and just so much raw power. Lots of dried figs here and a lovely touch of coffee and mocha too; plenty of sweetness but this is an impeccably balanced wine. Not over the top with the heat and alcohol, this is remarkably drinkable now, though it seems very obvious that this has many, many decades to go.

1985 Château Canon France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Fairly solid bottle of right bank -- this is still a touch on the austere side for my taste, but there's some ripeness here that gives this body. A hint of pyrazine, this has some fairly serious structure. Overall I think I would have liked some more fruit but nonetheless this is still a very solid example of Canon.
