Introduction
As I am a regular guest at this fine Italian Restaurant, the Managing Director Sinora Pieprzyca, invited me to join a presentation of Le Serre Nuove dell Ornellaia, cause this bottling from Ornellaia is celebrating its 20ties vintage!
To be a welcomed guest is always a fantastic feeling!
So all of us tried six vintages of this wine and later on enjoyed a terrific four course menu.
The chef de cuisine, Signore Ferrario, in my honest opinion created from high class products a Michelin Star worthy menu!
Vittel Tonne,
Risotto alle Serre Nuovemantecato al Parmiggiano Reggiano,
Filet of beef in herbs and mushroom ragout with white Polenta,
CAntuccini Parfait, Ornus-Zabaione
The Ornellaia crew, lead by Sales Director Banks, and with much more information from the export Manager for the german speaking countrys Frau Schmid, explained a lot about everything started at Bolgheri and how to produce an iconic italian wine.
A very interesting and memorable experience and evening.
Great food paired with great mature wine and really refreshing Champagne!
Flight 1 (9 notes)
Red
1999 Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Le Serre Nuove
Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri
This one is a blend of 70% CS and 30% Mer, quite earthy nose, mushrooms, lively acid initinally, austere at first, needs some aeration still, strong cassis and liquorice, savioury midbodied, good long finish, this one is all about elegance, no need to hurry, ***-****
Red
2002 Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Le Serre Nuove
Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri
This bottle is even better than the 99 before, 75% CS and 25% Mer, cherry and red cassis on the nose, the palate at first shows more tertiar aromas, such as tar and liquorice, forest soil, again a finesse wine, but more energy and Cabernet tension as the 99, very good with the filet in herbs and mushroom ragout, with some more air showing intense black cassis, long finish and really convincing, ****(+)
Red
2009 Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Le Serre Nuove
Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri
54% Mer, 31% CS, 10% PV, 5% CF, this is a different wine, compote nose and palate, from a very warm year, silky, but lacking the tention of the first two samples, tasty swallowing, more gastronomic and somehowe a crowd pleaser in a good way, drink up, **-***,86-88
Red
2012 Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Le Serre Nuove
Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri
52% Mer, 28% Cs, 12% PV, 8% CF, starting with very supporting acid, dense and tight, full of rich dark berry, very good grip on the midpalate, on the elegant side, not too alcohol driven, well structured, ending long+, can be enjoyed now with a decent decant or be cellared another 5(+) years easily, ***(*-?), 91,92(+?) potential
Red
2015 Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Le Serre Nuove
Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri
64% Mer, 17% CS, 10% CF, 9% PV, juicy rich fruit, plums, a little Pomerol like, but on the palate still fresh and gentle, long finish with some good ripe tannin in the background, more open than most of the prior vintages, ***(+), 89,90(+) potential
Red
2017 Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Le Serre Nuove
Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri
Tried the topical vintage at long last, 54% Mer, 26% CS, 14% CF, 6% PV, no surprise, this one is vivacious with some grainy tannin in the background, well structured, fresh and lively, but for me in this condition needs some food, fullbodied and good length, needs time, at least 5 more years, *(**-****), 90(+) potential
White - Sparkling
2012 Louis Roederer Champagne Vintage Brut
France, Champagne
From 3 Magnums, consistent note: stunning energy, showing pears, apples, mouthwatering zesty, on the other hand candied fruit, clearly chalky mineralic, bread crest, finesse and richness, way too young for me, will benefit from some years in the cellar, especially from MG, but if you like a young persistent fresh and ultralively champagne showing, this one is for you!
A reference for vintage champagne from the well known bigger producers, great! **(**), 91,92(+) potential
White
2017 Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Sauvignon Blanc Poggio alle Gazze Toscana IGT
Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
Served with the starting dish, Vitello Tonne, apricot, raisin, grapy, very dense and for me a little too rich and fullbodied, not a typical SB showing, no gooseberry neither hay or so, not really for me, **-?
