Introduction

Tasted the '78, '80, '95, '96, '98, & '99 at a partial verticle offline. WOTN '99. Overall, the common quality was the velvet, elegant, silky mouthfeel.

Flight 1 (6 notes)

Red
1978 Château Margaux France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
91 points
The '78 was well balanced with good fruit and structured oak finish.
Red
1980 Château Margaux France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
90 points
The '80 showed sweet red fruit without much finish.
Red
1995 Château Margaux France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
95 points
The '95 was a big dark full-bodied with strong brooding tannins - well-balanced and young.
Red
1996 Château Margaux France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
96 points
The '96 was huge - not nearly ready - dark fruit and monstrous tannins - long term laydown - but well-balanced.
Red
1998 Château Margaux France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
93 points
The '98 was fine, polished, elegant with even and balanced fruit and finish - very approachable now - great dinner wine.
Red
1999 Château Margaux France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
95 points
WOTN. The '99 was poured following the '98 and by comparison it showed a concentration of fruit - cherry notes - and firm structured oak finish - also ready now but far more complexity than the '98.
