Democratic Wine Dinner
My house
Tasted December 16, 2019 by galewskj with 180 views
Introduction
To celebrate midterm elections each participant submitted 2 or more wines and the group voted on which wine they would bring. WIne of the night was unquestionably the 1990 Chapoutier, but the Dunn was right on it's heels.

White - Sparkling
N.V. Gosset Champagne Brut Grande Réserve
92 points
I found this to be a great balance of citrus, yeast, acidity, fruit and rich toast. Pear was distinctive. This is harmonious and elegant. For NV this really excels.
White - Sparkling
2004 Dom Pérignon Champagne
93 points
My last bottle, and the best. I hope I get to try it again in the future. What's great about Dom is the elegance and balance. There is the lemon and acidity that plays against the rich oak and toast.

White
2014 Aubert Chardonnay Sugar Shack
94 points
This is a harmonious and distinctly California chardonnay. There is ripe peach and pear, along with plenty of French oak (I don't think it is overoaked). I'm glad to see I have a bottle of this and look forward to trying it in 4 years or so.

Red
1990 M. Chapoutier Côte-Rôtie La Mordorée
96 points
Pop and pour. This wine was a rockstar. Dried herbs, spice mix, lots of tar, beef blood, cherry, blue fruit, cassis, brambly wet forest floor. What was cool was that you'd get a new smell or taste out of it every time. This was the best Chapoutier I've had, I'm still not sure they're worth the current asking prices, but this rocked.
Red
1996 Dunn Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain
94 points
Decanted about 2 hours. This was distinctly Dunn. Funky and red-fruited. There are herbs, olives, and leather. This showed amazingly well.
Red
2005 Scarecrow Cabernet Sauvignon
93 points
Decanted 1 hour. This wine was dense and bordering on jammy. It opened up with more air, but the fruit is still really dense and hearty. Besides fruit, there is fertile earth. Among the 6 of us, everyone else liked this wine more than I did, but 93 is still a pretty darn good score.
Red
2010 Peter Michael Les Pavots
93 points
Decanted about 3 hours. This followed a 2005 Scarecrow, which in hindsight might not have been the right order. The Scarecrow was much bigger, while this was leaner and more of a Bordeaux blend :). I totally get the influence of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc on this. I actually preferred this wine over the Scarecrow, but it's totally an apples to oranges comparison.

This is a balanced and textbook Sauternes.
