Flight 1 (1 note)

White - Sparkling
1983 Taittinger Champagne Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut France, Champagne
Dark color but ample fruit, honeyed pears and mineral. Still bubbles in this beauty. A textbook example of mature Champagne. At peak, drink up!

Flight 2 (4 notes)

White
2004 Domaine Ramonet Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru
Unreal purity, mesmerizing. Chiseled mineral with a looooooong finish of honey, fruit, and this ethereal quality Ramonet sometimes has -- like drinking liquid diamonds.

This is one of the all time great white Burgundy wines, sadly my last bottle.
White
1999 Domaine Leroy Corton-Charlemagne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
Served blind. Smoky, reduced, flinty, with a hint of burnt popcorn on the nose. The reduction led me to Coche or D'Auvenay, but the mouthfeel was more akin to the former. In the glass this seemed to get smokier and smokier, almost a campfire.

Finish was pristine, salty and fruity, with minerals and tremendous length. As it warmed in the glass, more citrus emerged, and almost Meursault like lemon. In the final analysis, a great wine, very complex, and clearly with a long life ahead of it.
White
2014 Jean-Claude Ramonet Chevalier-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
Served blind. Light color, slightly tropical aromas, precise with a saline and mineral finish. My guess was '06 Ramonet Montrachet, which speaks to the quality here. Interesting to see if this tropical element becomes more or less pronounced in time. Enjoyable now, likely with big upside in future years.
White
2005 Domaine d'Auvenay (Lalou Bize-Leroy) Meursault 1er Cru Gouttes d'Or France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
Served blind. Smoke and reduction reminiscent of the '99 Leroy CC served beside it, but mouthfeel is completely different. Where the Leroy was focused and lean on the palate, this is broad and viscous. I like both very much, and the contrast is remarkable. This wine is so dense it's almost chewy, quite a long finish as well.

Flight 3 (5 notes)

Red
2007 Domaine G. Roumier / Christophe Roumier Bonnes Mares France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
Based on some of the tasting notes on CellarTracker I thought this would be open for business after a couple of hours of slow oxidation. Not so! At least not to my taste.

The purity and elegance of the wine is remarkable, even at this youthful stage, but it's just not giving a fraction of what will undoubtedly come in a decade or three.

On its own it was very good, but not great. Not enough complexity yet, and somewhat tight.

When the '71 Roumier Bonnes Mares was served, it became apparent how bad this case of infanticide really was. This '07 has the stuffing to be excellent one day...

***

There was enough left for a glass to taste two days later. The wine became more elegant, more suave, but not necessarily more complex. This is very fine, just too darn young.

Red
1971 Domaine G. Roumier / Christophe Roumier Bonnes Mares France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
Served blind. GORGEOUS floral aroma, combined with the freshest and most lovely earth. The way this wine incorporated earthiness while not sacrificing a whit of purity was extraordinary. There is a touch of soy on top of a palate of sweet red fruit, and ample mineral underneath. If there's any knock against this beauty, it may be the length of finish not quite as grand as the soaring aromatics and beguiling palate. I love love love this wine.
Red
1990 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée St. Vivant France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru
Ugh. One taster said VA, and to me it smelled like dirty diapers. Just awful, and didn't blow off one bit with time in the glass.

This bottle had been purchased on release and stored underground. Sometimes you do everything right, and the wine is still FUBAR.

1991 Domaine Leroy Romanée St. Vivant France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru
Served blind, I guessed '90 Leroy though I wasn't sure about the vineyard. This has tremendous class and regal bearing, as one would expect. What was especially noteworthy about this wine was the carrythrough from start to finish -- aroma, attack, midpalate, and finish were seamless. So harmonious, with classic Leroy aromatics, this is both delicious and intellectual. Enjoy now, but no rush this has many years ahead of it.
Red
1993 Domaine Dujac Clos St. Denis France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos St. Denis Grand Cru
Served blind. This was sweet, spicy, and sexy. A wine that is virtually impossible to dislike, and goes down quickly. Pretty much the total package, except it wasn't quite as precise and delineated as the other stellar reds today.
