Seattle Burgundy Group Tasting #4

Cordon Selections

Tasted January 17, 2008 by The Klipper with 553 views

Introduction

This poor northern commune was was met with derision by the group, but I think we should taste wines from Brochon at some point.

Flight 1 - Starter wine (1 note)

Thanks Brad!

White
1998 Domaine Ramonet Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Le Charmois Blanc France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Saint-Aubin 1er Cru
94 points
Smoky earthy aromas, loads of nut and hay, tremendous length. Warmed up and held together very well. Hold until 2015 with quality provenance.

Flight 2 - Wussy 2005s (3 notes)

Red
2005 Mongeard-Mugneret Fixin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Fixin
86 points
Originall showed a pleasant blue-/raspberry primariness. Foraye later into something not nearly so, with a stewed tomato quality. For all its new wave charm, still had commune rusticity, and even ended up showing rather tired. Crowd found it a touch oaky.
Red
2005 Domaine Philippe Naddef Fixin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Fixin
88 points
Dusty, granitic, Beaujolais-like nose. Darkest of the flight by far. Rather a donut, with a promising entry, and a decent finish, but not a lot to carry it along. Rustic in a Gevrey-esque vein. Shows a musty and green component, and finally a touch of astringency. Others also found this oaky -- I said, how much new oak is on a Burgundy that the agency sells to the importer for five euro?
Red
2005 Fougeray de Beauclair Fixin Clos Marion France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Fixin
89 points
Bizarro reductive nose to start. Chalky; structured, with dark red flavors; developed an asafoetida aroma; scarcely silky, but sleeker than the others in the flight. Decanting did this wine a world of good: my notes say that it "garnered an additional five points" with air. Others called it delicate, and displaying the least typicity, but it was generally liked.

Flight 3 - Steroidal 2005s (3 notes)

Red
2005 Domaine du Vieux Collège Fixin Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Fixin
90 points
Yes, that the big 9-0 for general cold soak extract. Big bright reds, a touch dusty; somewhat disturbing notes of crushed aspirin; good length. Could be tiresome to drink and entire bottle.
Red
2005 Domaine du Vieux Collège Fixin 1er Cru Hervelets France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Fixin 1er Cru
92 points
As with the Fixin V.V. 05, but very tightly wound. My candidate for the cellar of the entire Fixin tasting, although many others gave the nod to the Lucien le Moine Chapitre. Does not seem as preoccupied with modernity as the V.V. or the Naddef, but an obviously special site as far as this commune goes.
Red
2005 Lucien Le Moine Fixin 1er Cru Clos du Chapitre France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Fixin 1er Cru
91 points
Cinnamon city, with clanging acids. I found the retronasal qualities to show artificial fruit and excess oak, but others enjoyed the "pumpover and extract, and vigorous tannins," and presumed it to "have ten or 15 years of promise in the cellar."

Flight 4 - Funky cold Medina (3 notes)

Red
2000 René Bouvier Fixin Crais de Chene France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Fixin
86 points
Traditional, with an iron-ridden aspect.
Red
2003 Méo-Camuzet Frère et Sœurs Fixin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Fixin
81 points
Roasty-ripe and Rhone-like -- all the attributes you fear from this vintage. Yucko. Perhaps the estate bottling, and certainly the Chapitre, must be better.
Red
2004 Méo-Camuzet Frère et Sœurs Fixin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Fixin
80 points
Unpleasantly oaky, with weedy and pickle-barrel notes. An unkind way to finish this overall surprising tasting of Fixin.

Flight 5 - Closer wine (1 note)

Thanks Brad!

Red
1991 Domaine Belle Crozes-Hermitage Cuvée Louis Belle France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Crozes-Hermitage
91 points
Demonstrative cofee/toffee-ridden aromas and flavors. Not roasted particularly, and certainly not tired, but quite well-developed. Dramatic fruit, wine.

Closing

Pretty hard to polish up the image and away the rusticity of this commune. But they are pretty good values nevertheless.
