Election Night 2019 at Jordan's.

Introduction

Not a wine night and no notes taken at the time, but I've recorded a few impressions of what we drank.

Flight 1 - Champagne with with smoked salmon and the exit poll. (2 notes)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Taittinger Champagne Brut Réserve / La Française France, Champagne
This was fine but I don't think that Hatch Mansfield have any right to be upset when this gets discounted down to £25. The Bollinger was a clear improvement.

Not as good as the aged bottle I had some time ago.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Bollinger Champagne Special Cuvée Brut France, Champagne
90 points
Served in Lehmann glasses this was a clear step up from the Taittinger.

The yeastiness of the nose jumped out of the glass. The usual red apple flavours were present on the palate with enough acidity and 'dryness' to prevent things from becoming cloying.

It seems a little churlish to add that the bottle that I cellared for five years that I had a while back was in a different league.

Flight 2 - Roast Beef and Yorkshire Puddings with the earlier results. (2 notes)

Red
2010 Viña Vik Cabernet Sauvignon PARCEL SERIES (MAJESTIC WINE) Chile
91 points
The cabernet profile was clear with a lovely nose of tar and blackcurrant. The palate was well structured with good fruit and a tanic back-bone. Clearly new world but as with so many Chilean reds, the tanins prevented this from coming across as a fruit-bomb.

Red
2013 Luis Felipe Edwards LFE900 Single Vineyard Chile, Rapel Valley, Colchagua Valley
I preferred the Vina VIK wine served before this.

The nose had a bit of tobacco with bright blueberry-fruit flavours. The palate showed round fruit and decent length.

Flight 3 - Cheese board with big Labour losses. (2 notes)

White - Sweet/Dessert
2017 The Ned Sauvignon Blanc Noble New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough
No notes at the time. This had a bit of citrus and a kind of raciness to hint and the wines that we would normally associate with sauvignon blanc. Great with the selection of cheeses available.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2018 Rustenberg Chenin Blanc Straw Wine South Africa, Coastal Region
Peaches and honey with a bit of marmalade. Great with the cheese and I preferred this to the Kiwi late-harvest sauvignon blanc that preceded it.

Flight 4 - Tories celebrating and Labourites drowning their sorrows. -Jo Swinson loses her seat : ) (1 note)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Piper-Heidsieck Champagne Cuvée Brut France, Champagne
89 points
Election night 2019.

This was the Champagne we turned to after dinner and with the leftover Taittinger and Bolly floating around, I thought that our slightly inebriated state would prevent this from suffering by comparison. In the end, I needn't have worried about that as this bottle held up very well in the face of the competition.

The nose had the usual Piper-Heidsieck sulphur and a faint whiff of potting-soil (probably the Pinot Meunier). It's worth remembering that this wine is nearly a blanc de noirs, but unlike Bolly or Drappier, red apple flavours from the Pinot Noir do not seem to be in the driving seat. Instead, this is leaner with crisp pear and some grainy notes. It's a similar style to Moet but a much better deal IMHO.

A very good quaffing Champagne.

Closing

A mix of Labour and Tories in the room, so a mixed reception to the night but no problems with the wines.
