Introduction

Fun times with good friends and good wines. Blind tasting is always fun, educational, humbling.

Flight 1 (9 notes)

White
1998 R. López de Heredia Rioja Blanco Reserva Viña Tondonia Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja
92 points
Light orange color. Aromas show an interesting mix of lemon, quince, orange peel, with sea salt, white tea, candle wax, but the oxidation elements are woven in well. Zippy on the palate with a pleasant creaminess. Orange peel, candied lemon, mixed with salt brine, green olives, hay, honey. This was decanted and got more and more expressive with air. Tastes "natty" but clean and vibrant. This bottle was in a great place, although I assume variation is quite a thing with this wine. Tasted blind, I wasn't convinced of anything (Chenin? Random Italian natural wine? A less crazy Jura Chard?) but should've known it was Heredia. So good.
White
2018 Patrick Piuze Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
92 points
Aromas of lemon, peach, green apple, with hay, lemon verbena, chalk. Creamy texture on the palate, pretty, solid depth, a rounded, riper wine but also still a good amount of saline and crushed chalk. Notes of honey, flint, graham cracker. With air, more classic Chablis qualities came out. Tasted blind, guessed a 2016 Testut Chablis Montee de Tonnerre.
Red
2015 Jean-Pierre Robinot (Les Vignes de l'Ange Vin) Lumière des Sens France, Loire Valley, Jasnières
93 points
Lovely nose of raspberries, cherries, airy, floral tones, with spiced tea, holiday spice candle, rose petals. Deep but bright on the palate, zingy red fruits (red apple, raspberry, spiced cranberry sauce). Notes of mint, earth, soy, radish, tobacco, with some black tea and dusty mineral notes on the finish. This is just delightful. I guessed Jura Ploussard, but I wasn't convinced. This Pinot d'Aunis is something else!
Red
2005 Edmunds St. John Rocks and Gravel USA, California
91 points
It has some tomato paste and saucy mushrooms on the nose, with juicy plums and mulled black cherries. Plush texture, dusty tannins, fresh acidity. I get saucy plums with smoky, tar, roasted meat elements, anise and clove and pepper. Aged well, but still going. Tasted blind, I guessed a 2001 Southern Rhone GSM.
Red
2000 Dunn Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain USA, California, Napa Valley, Howell Mountain
94 points
My contribution. I couldn't have been happier with how this showed. Dark currants still going on the nose, lots of them, with a complex mix of spice cake, clove, mint, graphite, leather, bookshelves - lots going on. Crisp acidity balances well with the tannins, which still provide solid structure, on a medium-bodied frame. Red and black currants, topped in mint, graphite, menthol, cocoa, with mineral and earth undertones. Some savory spice notes coming out. Refined and balanced. The blind tasting guesses from others centered around Cab Franc-heavy, Right Bank Bordeaux from the early 00s, but one friend guessed Napa Cab from an "old school" producer.

1998 Domaine de Vallouit Hermitage Cuvée Spéciale Les Greffières France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

Awesome nose of mulled cherries and blackberry, with musk, menthol, chewing tobacco, olive brine, library dust, some coffee and vanilla as well. Racy acidity whips through this wine from start to finish, and the tannins have a plush feel. Tart cherry and currants are laced with expressive notes of campfire, tar, grilled steak, green and black peppercorns. Crisp, expressive, lively, complex, this was really special. Tasted blind, I guessed late 90s Cornas.
Red
2016 Podere le Boncie (Giovanna Morganti) Le Trame Toscana IGT Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
91 points
Nose of cherries, violets, herbs. A bit dense on the palate, structured, but vibrant, too. Needs time to open up, but I love the core of plum, cherries, with cocoa, mint, charcoal, violets. Missed Tuscany and guessed young Loire Cab Franc, ah well.
Red
2005 Domaine Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
93 points
Aromas of sweet plums, raspberry jam, roses, clove, sweet spice cake, cocoa. On the palate, this is still quite dense and jammy, with medium tannins and medium/low acid. Ripe cherries and raspberry jam fruit, with smoky, violets, clove and sweet pipe tobacco. Delicious stuff but still so young. I'll bury my other bottles. The blind tasting crew all nailed this as CdP.

2015 Jean-Marc Brignot & Anders Frederik Steen Ardèche Don't Throw Plastic in the Ocean Le Mazel (Gérald et Jocelyn Oustric) France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Ardèche

This was a lot of fun. Suave, spicy, juicy plums, crunchy carbonic fruits mixed with musk, pepper, anise. Crushble but showing solid complexity, too. Tasted sighted.
