Introduction

A stunning line-up of Vega Sicilia Unico. These wines are built to last and age incredibly well.

Flight 1 (1 note)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Krug Champagne Brut Grande Cuvée Édition 168ème France, Champagne
95 points
Gorgeous Krug to open the evening (from magnum). Vibrant and fresh.

Flight 2 (1 note)

White
2016 Jean-Marc Roulot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Le Cailleret France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
93 points
Beautiful white to kick off the meal, paired with beets with fennel and rye. Great acidity and freshness. Good depth and length.

Flight 3 (3 notes)

Red
1970 Bodegas Vega-Sicilia Ribera del Duero Único Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero
99 points
Amazing melange of flavors. This was opened 30 minutes before serving and then kept on opening up and evolving over the subsequent 3 hours. A massive deep, dark brooding wine with cigar box, prunes and hoisin sauce flavors. Great fruit intensity, length and depth. Remarkably young and fresh for a 50 year old wine. This will easily go for another 20+ years. WOTN for me.

Red
1973 Bodegas Vega-Sicilia Ribera del Duero Único Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero
95 points
Next to the 1970 in this flight, this had a very different profile. Much more elegant, acidic and red-fruit driven than the darker 1970. Beautiful wine with great complexity.

1976 Bodegas Vega-Sicilia Ribera del Duero Único Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero

More akin to the 1973 than the 1970. Super-silky tannins. Beautiful freshness and acidity. Red fruit with some roses and red cherries.

Flight 4 (2 notes)

Red
1985 Bodegas Vega-Sicilia Ribera del Duero Único Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero
97 points
Ripe and rich. A big wine that still feels incredibly young at age 35. Superfine tannins. Dense dark blackberry fruit and black tea. This needs many more years to reach its peak and is absolutely delicious.
Red
1989 Bodegas Vega-Sicilia Ribera del Duero Único Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero
93 points
Another young, ripe full-bodied version with more black than red fruit. This has 80% Tempranillo in the blend. Next to the 1985 this has a bit less depth and length.

Flight 5 (2 notes)

Red
1990 Bodegas Vega-Sicilia Ribera del Duero Único Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero
91 points
This has a slightly lighter style than the 85 and 89. Pretty and elegant but lacking a bit in power. Nicely balanced. Prunes, soy sauce and leather.
Red
1994 Bodegas Vega-Sicilia Ribera del Duero Único Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero
95 points
First bottle was off a bit but the second bottle was brilliant. Dense and vibrant. Full-bodied style with lots of depth and intensity. The tannins are a bit more in the foreground in this vintage. Loads of dark blackberry fruit and black tea.

Flight 6 (2 notes)

Red
1953 Bodegas Vega-Sicilia Ribera del Duero Único Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero
98 points
Wow! Incredibly elegant and fresh at age 67. Still has superfine tannins to give this gorgeous structure and mouthfeel. Beautiful secondary development but not old or tired at all. Red fruit profile with some hints of strawberries. An awesome wine.

1964 Bodegas Vega-Sicilia Ribera del Duero Único Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero
94 points
Next to the brilliant 1953, the 1964 was a bit more evolved with a beautiful tertiary nose and flavors. This has soy sauce, hoisin sauce and tobacco on the nose.
