Barrel Tasting at Sylvie Esmonin with Sylvie
Gevrey Chambertin - Clos St Jacques
Tasted February 11, 2020 by Nanda with 185 views
Introduction
Quite something to taste in the cellar at the base of CSJ.
Flight 1 (7 notes)
Red
2018 Sylvie Esmonin (Michel et Fille) Bourgogne Cuvée Sylvie
Meaty and smoky nose. Impressively concentrated and rich for an appellation wine. Straight forward black cherry flavor profile but you'll be hard pressed to fine a Bourgogne of this stature. 88-89
Red
2018 Sylvie Esmonin (Michel et Fille) Côte de Nuits Villages
Attractive nose that punches above its weight class with sweet black cherry, spice, smoke and florals. Plump and rich yet fresh across the palate. Good length and purity. 89-90
Red
2018 Sylvie Esmonin (Michel et Fille) Gevrey-Chambertin
From 20 climats averaging 55-60 year old vines. Impressively stuffed nose with meaty black cherry and smoke. Mouth coating rich fruit that is sufficiently fresh and bright. Flavors that just scream Gevrey with meat, earth and spice. Strong village wine. 91+
Red
2018 Sylvie Esmonin (Michel et Fille) Gevrey-Chambertin Cuvée Vieilles Vignes
Includes some 1er fruit and averages over 60 year old vines. More intensely aromatic with meat spice, stem and florals. Rich but with great energy and balancing structure. Fun now, but should reward 5-10 years of cellaring. 92+
Red
2018 Sylvie Esmonin (Michel et Fille) Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques
Boldly spicy and meaty nose. Terrific richness and density with Grand Cru levels of concentration. The black cherry fruit is ripe, to be sure, but its held in check nicely by the acids. Layered and so flavorful. This is a decadent young wine that should age gracefully for 10-15+ years. 93-94
Red
2016 Sylvie Esmonin (Michel et Fille) Gevrey-Chambertin Cuvée Vieilles Vignes
PnP bottle. More red fruited, more juicy and less overt than the 2018 line up. Plenty of cherry in the red and black spectrum, good meat and spice throughout. Refined presence with still grippy, firm tannin. Needs 5+ years in the cellar to open up. 92+
Red
2014 Sylvie Esmonin (Michel et Fille) Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques
PnP bottle. Wow, an arresting nose with intense meat, spice and black cherry. More restraint and refinement than the 2018 barrel sample. Flavors are precise and classically CSJ. Layered, lifted finish with still chewy tannin providing grip. Needs 5-10 years. 93-94+
