Introduction

A friend's birthday. We were supposed to be at the "Kitchen" in Sacramento. Some nice wines on the edge of life as we are.

2003 Marcassin Chardonnay Three Sisters Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
Great color, the excess oak made this a time capsule and preserved it like a Retsina. Been in my cellar since it was bottled, it was a QC sample off the line. The cork was quite sound, it has thrown a few tartrates, the ullage was less than a quarter inch. Aromatically it has some mild honey and citrus notes and the oak has finally aromatically integrated, remarkably youthful. The texture is mild oak tannins but remarkably soft. Never liked the style young but this is ok. Amazing experiment.

The bottle was sound, no real ullage, the cork was a Nomocorc, slight curse. Didn't remember what we used at that time. But no ullage and it looks good particularly the bright purple color, no amber, still very vital. Both Jim and I had a hard time describing this wine. Jammy fruit, plummy, almost but not prune, hint of tomatoes and beef stew. Very fleshy and very viscous, some tannin in the edges, really nice with the Stracotto.

1997 Mario Perelli-Minetti Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Miriam USA, California, Napa Valley

Great color, slight brick at edges, it needs air, tons of body. Very sound aged Cabernet blend, good acid balance, some soft tannins in the edges. Overall this is past its peak but only slightly. Medium intensity claret flavors, aged but lovely finish.

Impressive, good body and flavor, color is red brick. Cork and ullage were good. Glad we caught it at this point pretty sure it would not improve further beyond this point. Very spicy, toach of green leaf, but no brown sugar. Probably 2 to 4 years past its peak but still graceful. Good with the food.

Another wine caught at it peak. Best wine of the five reds but the lineup was quite good and judging aged wines is fun but not a contest. Supple lovely aged claret, truely excellent, need to finish the case with friends if this crap ever gets past us.

Marginally a bit past its time but still vital, great with the dessert. Mild botrytis notes, alcohol a bit high at 12%, sweet but not an overwhelming stickie per se. Got this for $5 at a warehouse sale. Well worth that. May use rest of bottle for cooking, something pork based.
