Woodyville

Introduction

CV-19 Rule Breaking Hedonism Special Event! I bring two crummy bottles (the '09's for their wedding year) and JK go crazy!
Kyla did "THE BOMB" sourdough bread of all time, and we dove into that many times over the 2 evenings.
Good thing we're not living close anymore!

Flight 1 - Day 1 Opener (1 note)

Red
2004 Patricia Green Cellars Pinot Noir Notorious USA, Oregon, Yamhill County
92 points
Perfectly mature OPN! Soft round mouthfeel, Rainier cherry, plum, earth, forest, spice, a hint of oak. This one could lull you to...but there's more to drink, stay tuned! Drink now.

Flight 2 - Mostly Rhoney (5 notes)

Smoked hazelnuts, charcouterie

Red
2007 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
95 points
Uuuuh-mami! A great wine that is nicely evolved from the last time I tasted it. The fruit has moved to a supporting role with garrigue, wet underbrush, iodine/ kelp, smoked meat, and saddle now showing off. Kirsch and plum notes expand on the palate. Now-2027

Red
2009 Domaine Pierre Usseglio & Fils Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
91 points
A fine wine but (my) relatively weak addition to this line-up! A mix of red and black fruit supported by earth, stone, smoke and herbs. Tannins are nearly integrated. Now-2024.
Red
2011 Cayuse Syrah Cailloux Vineyard USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Walla Walla Valley
94 points
Loved this wine! As usual Cayuse finds a way to be hedonism in a glass, IF you don't mind the "funk". I'm ok with it. Blackberry, meat, clove and pepper with florals later. Just FUN! there's structure to hold, but.... Now-2025.

2012 Jax Vineyards Cabernet Franc JR Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley, Calistoga
93 points
Awesome "gift" by JKW to my wife who loves CF. Luxurious on the palate. More cinnamon in a wine than I've had in a long time, but the mostly black fruit and floral notes help up nicely and it may have been even more balanced the next day at lunch! 93+ Now-2022.
Red
2013 Saxum James Berry Vineyard USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles Willow Creek District
95 points
This is a big wine! Ripe but not overly so. Great example of PR fruit. Definitely some overlap with Rhone but with some CdP's in this tasting, the New World origin was clear. Lots of structure supporting mixed berries, black plum, black cherry, herbs and minerals/stone. Now-2023

Flight 3 - Day 1 Dessert (1 note)

Foi gras and French Macarons

White - Sweet/Dessert
2005 Château Guiraud France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
93 points
Great with foie gras or blue cheese, this half bottle shined with tropical and fresh citrus rind notes, then stone fruit, honeysuckle, spice linger. Nice balance and depth, has 10+ years.

Flight 4 - Day 2 Opener (1 note)

Osetra, Sevruga and Kaluga Caviar Taster Set / gourmetfoodstore

White - Sparkling
2004 Pierre Paillard Champagne Grand Cru Brut Millésimé France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
95 points
Fantastic Champagne that may have benefited from the pairing and situation... But STILL, an open nose of white citrus and bread, a touch of pinot berry, green apple, white peach and a saline finish. WOW! Has 10 years if you like them mellower.

Flight 5 - Day 2 Reds, a bit Bordeaux'ish (6 notes)

More meat and cheeses! Japanese A5 Kobe beef that changed my life!

Red
1978 Château Lynch-Bages France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
87 points
Top of shoulder fill, cork was a challenge. Exactly what I expected and realistically hoped for when having a wine from Denise's HS grad year on her 60th BD! Garnet bowl, clear rim, surprisingly little brick. Hints of red fruit sitting in mixed leaves, forest, tar, cigar box, and dried florals. I think our collective appreciation of this bottle improved over an hour, not sure the wine did. DRINK!

2001 Deerfield Ranch DRX Meritage USA, California, North Coast

Hidden gem producer makes a 2001 Cab blend that will easily hold for 4-5 more years?!? This has some classic herbal tinged Sonoma fruit, mostly blackberry, plum and cassis. Some graphite and stone hints. Really good balance and feel. Now-2025.
Red
2008 Quilceda Creek Cabernet Sauvignon USA, Washington, Columbia Valley
97 points
WOTW(eekend), tied for WOTY(ear). This was a great bottle! Deep dark almost still brooding, with blackberry, black cherry, creme de cassis, stone, and mocha/ oak. Tannins are there but integrating, another 25 year wine. I'd actually wait a year or two if you only had a couple. 97+

2009 Château Clerc Milon France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
94 points
Unintentional, but fun fact, we had all 3 of my bottles with J&K. The scores have been the same for me, but the wine itself is certainly evolving. Great balance and a little more savory. Some classic Pauillac notes that I DO love. Now-2029.
Red
2012 Knights Bridge Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville
94 points
Brings back vivid memories of the sit down tasting in Huge Bear (do it!). Deep dark and rich black fruit, bramble, graphite and stone. Luxurious on the palate. Very fun, loads of time-2025.
Red
2012 Schrader Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon RBS Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville
95 points
95+, a little more of everything compared to the Knight's Bridge. The deeper structure may make it a little less velvety, but C'MON! Ripe black fruit in layers with spice, florals, and stone. Now-2035.

Flight 6 - Day 2 Dessert (1 note)

Rogue Creamery: Rogue River Blue

Red - Fortified
2003 Kopke Porto Vintage Portugal, Douro, Porto

A bit rustic and coarse with notes of various liqueurs, nuts, spices, and cocoa. Great with Rogue Creamery Blues!

This will be hard to beat but something tells me we'll try...
