Wednesday Wine Education #1
Grapes & Grains, Temecula, CA
Tasted June 17, 2020 - June 19, 2020 by R2-D2 with 86 views
Introduction
First of my monthly educational teaching classes. Unthemed, just trying to move some wine.
Flight 1 (8 notes)
White
2019 Benito Santos Albariño Rías Baixas Igrexario de Saiar
88 points
Crafted in a style to show more lean fruit than the more contemporary style of over-ripe fruit. So, it comes across as more crisp and refreshing. Still shows that leesy character which one of my students took as oak, and a laser-focused intensity to the acidity. While I am a little down (I like the over-ripe), this sold out fast. Drink now, but could hold a few years.
Red
2018 B.R. Cohn Pinot Noir
88 points
Silky mouthfeel of black cherry, cranberry, vanilla, and spice. Soft tannins, lingering zesty finish. Easy drinking, good value.
Red
2016 Famiglia Statella Etna Pettinociarelle
91 points
Shared w the wine education class that I teach. Pure and rustic. Massive minerally finish, earthiness, and red fruit.
Red
2015 Onward Wines Carignane Hawkeye Ranch
91 points
The bottom layer of whole clusters during fermentation adds a needed tinge of vegetal, stemmy pepperiness to the finish. Bursting with ripe berry flavor, provincial herbs, cocoa, and lavender, this monovarietal, old vine Carignane delivers an uncomplicated, yet rich mouthfeel and approachable tannin. Well received.

Red
2016 Casa Tiene Vista Vineyard Merlot Blackbird
85 points
Mostly ripe fruit flavors of berry, plum, currant to go with the toasty oak notes of coffee, chocolate, and baking spices. Moderate fine-grain tannins but noticeable, distracting high level of alcohol (14.8%?).
