Introduction

Six of us got together to drink a lot of great wines. We did a potluck but the dishes were as good if not better than the top restaurants in town, simple fresh ingredients that were cooked right. The wines showed well in general.

Flight 1 - Champagne (3 notes)

All showed really well.

Rosé - Sparkling
2008 Jérôme Prévost La Closerie Fac-Simile France, Champagne
94 points
Light cooper with some yellow. Delicate yet energetic nose displaying subtle red fruit, strawberry water, cherry, granny smith, light caramel, cooper, spicy spices and limestone. Beautifully integrated harmonious palate, finely layer subtle red fruit, exceptional precision, freshness and focus, fine generous mousse, bright acidity and strong mineral, and a long subtle red fruit driven finish with cooper and limestone at the end. The finish is very dry. Perhaps expressing the 08 vintage, very focused and precise.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Jacques Selosse Champagne Grand Cru Lieux-dits Extra Brut Le Mesnil-sur-Oger Les Carelles France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
97 points
Perfectly mature incredibly complex nose displaying rich yellow fruit, cinnamon apple, marzipan, anise, light caramel, butterscotch, oyster shell and limestone. Excellent concentration, layers upon layers of rich sweet yellow fruit, opulent and complex, bright acidity and strong limestone mineral, and a long sweet yellow fruit driven finish with marzipan and limestone at the end. Absolutely gorgeous showing. As usual with Selosse, fully ready upon release and no need to wait.
White - Sparkling
2008 Louis Roederer Champagne Cristal Brut France, Champagne
98 points
Incredibly youthful and energetic nose displaying concentration yellow fruit with a hint of white. Lemon curd, lemon, granny smith, light caramel, smoke, spicy spices and limestone. Exceptional concentration, layers upon layers of concentrated yellow fruit, very precise, focused and detailed, very fine abundant mousse, bright acidity and strong limestone mineral, and a long concentrated yellow fruit driven finish with spicy spices and limestone at the end. Although very young, it is drinking incredibly well, kinda champagne that rejuvenates your spirit.

Flight 2 - White (3 notes)

The Drouhin showed really well.

White
2005 Domaine Ramonet Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru
95 points
Expressive extremely youthful nose displaying incredibly concentrated yellow and white fruit, white peach, a hint of pineapple, fresh lemon juice, beeswax, spicy spices, white flowers and crushed rock. Unbelievable concentration, layers upon layers of perfectly ripe sweet yellow fruit, rich and dense, an incredible amount of extract, medium acidity, strong limestone mineral and a long concentrated slightly coiled yellow fruit driven finish with beeswax and limestone at the end. There is a hint of alcohol at the end. This clearly expresses the 05 ripeness. This is a powerful concentrated wine, a bit closer to Batard than Chavalier.
White
2000 Joseph Drouhin Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches Blanc l'Ouvrée des Dames France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
96 points
This has come together beautifully. Expressive nose displaying perfectly ripe yellow fruit, yellow and white peach, fresh lemon, a hint of apricot, sweet spices and mineral. Exceptional concentration, beautifully layers opulent yellow fruit, rich and opulent but also perfectly precise, harmonious and weightless, medium acidity, strong mineral, and a long rich yellow fruit drive finish. It is now showing GC like balance and finesse. Drinking magnificently.
White
2010 Edmond Vatan Sancerre Clos la Néore France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre
89 points
Not premoxed but a bit awkward. Not terribly expressive nose, granny smith, pyrazine, honey, spicy spices and a hint of limestone. Good concentration, packed slightly coiled yellow fruit, medium acidity and mineral, and a medium long finish with pyrazine and honey at the end. Adam mentions that the bottle from three night ago was better. Not the wine that I would seek based on bottle variations.

Flight 3 - White Burgundy (2 notes)

The 04 was really awkward. The Leflaive was a great Chevalier.

White
2010 Domaine Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
97 points
Expressive nose displaying perfectly ripe white and yellow fruit, pear, apple, lemon. a hint of lanoline, light caramel, white flowers and limestone. Beautifully integrated palate, very finely layered yellow and white fruit, rich yet silky and weightless, perfect balance and precision, medium acidity, strong mineral and a seamless long yellow fruit driven finish with lanoline and light crème brulee at the end. This particular bottle is a textbook example of Chavalier Montrachet, the palate to die for, very noble.

White
2004 Domaine Michel Niellon Chevalier-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
flawed
Correct color. Not premoxed but terribly muted. Avoid!

Flight 4 - Barolo (3 notes)

They were all very youthful. The 90 Monfortino was enormous.

Red
1996 Bruno Giacosa Barolo Riserva Falletto di Serralunga d'Alba Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
97 points
En magnum. Expressive complex nose displaying unbelievably concentration red and black fruit, dry cherry, sour cherry, blackberry, fruitcake, rose, tar, licorice, strong cedar, caramel, sweet spices and iron mineral. Exceptional concentration, layers upon layers of intense slightly dry red fruit, opulent and unctuous yet also silky and polished, also warm and round, bright acidity, strong iron mineral, still noticeable but non-obtrusive tannins and a long concentrated red fruit driven finish with tar and cedar at the end. Drinking beautifully but remains remarkably young. This has to be the most imposing Giacosa. A long life ahead.
Red
1990 Bruno Giacosa Barbaresco Riserva Santo Stefano Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
98 points
En magnum. Incredibly complex nose displaying very ripe red fruit, dry cherry, cherry, strawberry jam, fruitcake, a hint of caramel, rose, tar, licorice, leather, balsamico and iron. Perfectly integrated harmonious palate, very finely layered ripe red fruit, rich yet silky and weightless, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, still noticeable tannins and the finish that never ends. Although the 90 ripe fruit expression is quite evident, it remains beautiful balanced, precise and detailed. Drinking perfectly.
Red
1990 Giacomo Conterno Barolo Riserva Monfortino Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
98 points
Unbelievably youthful nose displaying massive black fruit, blackberry, black cherry, fruitcake, strong licorice and tar, molasses, mint, dark spices and iron. Incredible concentration, layers upon layers of concentrated slightly dry black fruit, dense and unctuous but also silky and fluid, bright acidity and strong iron mineral, still very noticeable tannins and the never ending finish. The 90 Monfortino remains incredibly young and can improve/mature for at least a couple more decades.

Flight 5 - For Adam (2 notes)

Adam originally planned his 50th birthday gathering at Eleven Madison which never materialized due to Covid. Bryan generously contributed these two wines in his honor.

Red
1970 Château Lafleur France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
flawed
Brett dominates, initially thinking corked but perhaps too much Brett.
Red
1970 C.V.N.E. (Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España) Rioja Viña Real Gran Reserva Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja
93 points
Medium expressive nose displaying slightly lean black fruit, black cherry, a hint of plum, roasted nuts, American oak and earth. Fully integrated palate, finely layered slightly lean black fruit, silky and polished, medium acidity and medium mineral, and a medium to long black fruit driven finish with American oak at the end. Drinking nicely but no need to wait.
