Virtual Single Blind ABC Wines

Introduction

This was the latest in our series of virtual wine tastings while trapped in this never ending pandemic. The theme this week was mine, and I struggled to come up with something. My preference was to stick to whites while the weather still allowed. I'm prettty sure the long and not to distant Fall and Winter will provide ample opportunity to hit the reds again. So, since we've hit the Chard pretty hard lately, I wanted to go in a different direction, hence the ABC theme. The format was pretty much the same with wines being poured from 4 to 430pm and transported to our homes. The tasting began around 630pm with wines poured into glass over time. We did 4 of the 5 event wines blind, but not the dessert wine as that was just too obvious. I added a couple bonus wines on each end to keep it interesting.

Flight 1 - Blind Opening Wine (1 note)

White - Sparkling
2004 Charles Heidsieck Champagne Blanc des Millénaires France, Champagne

Light gold color. Drank a glass over 30 minutes. Poured into jars for transport at 4:30pm and then tranferred to the various locals. I poured this last hoping to preserve the bubbles as much as possible. This was something of a test to see how a 5 oz pour of a Tete de Cuvee would hold up to transport being well sealed in a 6 oz jar. Since I was "hosting" my wine did not have to travel. However, I was still late to my own party so to speak and was scrambling to get my wines out and started. The talk was about how few bubbles there were on this. Now in my case, the bubbles were still moderate on pouring into glass (once I had the correct wine, but that's a long story), but they did seem to fade fairly quickly. The theory was that the jostling of driving them around may have had some impact.

At any rate, this was really quite nice, albeit clearly young. I expected as much, but given how spectacular the '95 was, I really wanted to check this out and see where it was and what kind of potential there might be. There is a fair bit of yeast and bread dough, not really any toastiness at this point; mainly green apple and pear notes, a little nuttiness, and a good streak of minerality, fairly creamy texture and prominent acidity. Very poised and classy. I'm not quite sure this will live up to the '95, but hey, the '95 didn't blow me away at first either. It was fairly similar to this actually - so hopefully that bodes well for the long haul. I probably won't open another for 3 to 5 years. Currently 93(+)pts.

Flight 2 - Main Blind Wines (4 notes)

White
2016 E. Guigal Condrieu La Doriane France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Condrieu
92 points
Light gold color. Drank a glass single blind over 2 hours plus. Wines were poured at 4pm for transport and transferred into glass around 6:50pm. This bottle of '16 wasn't nearly as evocative as the '14 we had a week ago. Still, it was very good; it just didn'y have the same level of intensity and expression. There's a little hint of fusil at first, the floral notes are slow to emerge, but gradually they build, the nose has a little nudge of alcohol too. More apple and citrus with just a most subtle touch of tropical fruit. The palate comes off round and a little fat, the tropical fruit shows a touch more, but still in the background, nicely spicy with good length. My #3 WOTN and tied for group #2 WOTN.

Light gold color. Drank a glass single blind over 2 hours plus. Wines were poured at 4pm for transport and transferred into glass around 6:50pm. This has a refined nose, sea air and lychee, , pear, a little floral, flint. The palate is rather crystalline and pure, good acidic spine with just a bit of bite, lychee, peach, lemon-lime, and nice balancing flinty mineral notes with a medium finish. Very nice. Picked this as the '09 Dagueneau BR. My #2 and group #1 WOTN.
White
2014 Aeris Wines Etna Bianco Superiore Italy, Sicily, Etna Bianco Superiore
89 points
Light gold color. Drank a glass single blind over 2 hours plus. Wines were poured at 4pm for transport and transferred into glass around 6:50pm. This was a little different, which was in part what led me to assume this was the '14 Aeris. The nose has some lacquer notes, honeyed, waxy, lemon peel, lemon wax. The palate is sour, lemon, waxy, medium plus bodied and a little angular. 89+ to 90pts.

2014 Didier Dagueneau Pur Sang France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Pouilly-Fumé

Very light gold color. Drank a glass single blind over 2 hours plus. Wines were poured at 4pm for transport and transferred into glass around 6:50pm. Geez, this has a wow nose, immense and it continues to build more over time - this has to be the Pur Sang. Smoky citrus and oozing of dry extract and smoky flint, citrus, lime, seashells. The palate in intense, riveting, lean with a driving stony and flinty minerality; amazing dry extract, citrus, citrus zest, amazing penetration and super long. Fantastic, and still rather youthful, but drinking just great - mindful in some ways of a young Grand Cru Chablis. My #1 and tied for group #2 WOTN.

Flight 3 - Bonus Red Burgundy (1 note)

Red
1993 Faiveley Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Maréchale France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
94 points
Dark red color with a 3mm clear edge. PNP, poured at 4:30pm for transport and transferred into glass around 8:30pm. Drank a glass over 2 hours. This was a gorgeous bottle. A previous bottle had been good, but this one was exceptional. A quintessential aged Burgundy with a beutifully complex nose of leather, soil, mushroom, iron, dried leaves, red fruit, dried wood, a little floral and just light hints of dark cocoa beans. The palate shows a nice streak of red cherry and red currants and black cherry, iron, with a soft texture and fine grained tannins, earthy and filled with forest floor and mushroom, old leather and a long finish. Bottles like this one will keep drinking well for some time. 94+ to 95pts.

Flight 4 - Dessert Wine (1 note)

White - Sweet/Dessert
2008 Domaine Huet Vouvray Moelleux 1ère Trie Clos du Bourg France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray
93 points
Very dark gold gold color. Drank a glass over an hour. Wines were poured at 4pm for transport and this was transferred into glass around 8:30pm. Wooly, rich and succulent fruit on the nose, apricot dominates, followed by ripe peach and apples. The palate is heavy, full bodied plus, very ripe and opulent, honeyed, concentrated apricot and dried apricot, ripe apple, apple peel, wool, pretty good acid, but this is still pretty round and ripe, good length. A little goes a long way.
