Introduction

A friend was curious about Brewer-Clifton Pinot Noir and since I had a bottle of the Ashley's that I had enjoyed in the past, I figured I would bring it out and showcase it along a few other Pinot selections. The usual suspects were invited and this was what ensued...

Flight 1 (7 notes)

Red
2005 Domaine Gachot-Monot Côte de Nuits Villages France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Côte de Nuits Villages
89 points
Popped and poured (drank over a period of two hours). This wine exhibited a ruby color. At first this wine was pretty much closed up and didn't reveal much, only giving off hints of cherry and earthiness. Upon a revisit later in the night, aromas of Maraschino cherries, raspberries and strawberries jumped out from the glass with earthy undertones and notes of spice , floral components and hints of pine. The palate (upon revisit) offered flavors of Bing cherries, cranberries and strawberries with notes of figs and spice leading to hints of forest floor on the finish. A lot of potential here that will reward those with the patience to let this one develop. HS89+
Red
2005 Rivers-Marie Pinot Noir Occidental Ridge Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
93 points
Splash decanted and consumed over a period of 2 hours. This wine exhibited a garnet/dark garnet color. On the nose, aromas of pomegranate, black cherries, raspberries and huckleberries with hints of orange peel and cocoa. On the palate, core flavors of black cherries, pomegranate and cranberry were complemented by notes of baking spices and vanilla leading to hints of earthiness on the finish. Again, wonderful mouthfeel with silky tannins and balanced acidity. This was a joy to drink... and I think I scored a tad high the last time I had it... but definitely a solid 93. HS93

2005 Brewer-Clifton Pinot Noir Ashley's Vineyard USA, California, Central Coast, Sta. Rita Hills

Splash decanted and consumed over a two hour period. This wine exhibited a dark ruby/garnet color. On the nose, there was a bit of burnt rubber action going on (like from a car peeling out of a driveway), I believe this is what some called a reductive nose? This would blow off eventually and reveal notes of Bing cherries, raspberries, strawberries and cranberries with hints of spice and earthiness. On the palate, rich, juicy flavors of strawberries, Bing cherries and raspberries were joined by some licorice and earthiness on the finish. The alcohol was a bit more present than I remember last... but still an overall enjoyable experience with Brewer-Clifton that only suffered due to it's company. HS91
Red
2005 Kosta Browne Pinot Noir Russian River Valley USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
91 points
Decanted for 1.5 hours. This wine exhibited a dark ruby/garnet color. On the nose, aromas of black cherries, raspberries and cranberries were joined by notes of cola, licorice, and hints of earthiness and floral elements. On the palate, more cherry cola action with raspberries and notes of mocha, vanilla, and spice. At first, the alcohol was a bit prominent but over time it would blow off and this wine became a more balanced creature that would bode well with more downtime. Definitely looking on the up and up... Red
2005 Witness Tree Vineyard Pinot Noir USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
88 points
Decanted for 2 hours. This wine exhibited a dark garnet color. On the nose, aromas of black cherries, raspberries and plums were met with notes of spice and earth. On the palate, flavors of black cherries and plums were met with notes of spice and vanilla. The finish was a bit short, but other than that a solid effort. Nice balance to this wine with adequate acid structure. HS88
Red
2005 Konrad Pinot Noir New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough
87 points
Popped and poured. This wine exhibited a dark garnet color. This wine was a bit reticent but with a bit more time it would reveal notes of black raspberries, black cherries, and plums with notes of mocha and spice. On the palate, dark fruit flavors led to a spicy finish with underlying notes of minerality. For the price, a solid NZ PN. HS87
Red
2006 Viña Cono Sur Pinot Noir Chile, Rapel Valley
83 points
Popped and poured. This wine exhibited a garnet color with ruby tinges. On the nose, aromas of cherries and strawberries were supplemented with hints of earthiness underlined by minerality. The nose was a bit reductive at first but would blow off quickly. On the palate, dried fruit components were evident and met with hints of spice and earth on the finish. The body was a bit more thin than the Don Rodolfo that I had from Argentina a few weeks prior for around the same price point. HS83
