Introduction

This might have really been the last warm day of the year, so we needed to drink Grand Cru, in both varieties, so the theme chose itself.

Flight 1 - Blanc (6 notes)

White
2006 Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
93 points
Plenty of rich orchard fruit with charming balance. Clearly showing the vintage’s ripeness, yet it easily stays balanced with enough acidity. Very good length.
White
2013 Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
93 points
I have not tasted this wine in three years, and like so many 2013s...wow!...where did all this great stuff come from?!? Layered and complex, with just a hint of sweetness in the background adding punch throughout.
White
2014 Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
From 375 ml bottle. Somewhat reduced, so never fully forthcoming, but clearly showing the most weight of the 06/13/14 mini vertical.
White
2008 Bouchard Père et Fils Corton-Charlemagne Domaine France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
flawed
Fairly oxidized, sort of drinkable. Sad...this is a great wine when correct.
White
2009 Louis Jadot Corton-Charlemagne Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
91 points
Clearly ripe with very good concentration. Still nicely fresh, just slightly less nuanced than I was hoping for this wine vs when tasted younger. Maybe more time will help bring out more?
White
2016 Domaine Rollin Père et Fils Corton-Charlemagne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
93 points
This just snuck up on us. At first it seemed like too many pedestrian examples of Corton-Charlemagne, but it kept going... and going... and going. Plenty of orchard fruit in a charming old school style that needs attention to be fully appreciated. Wonderful now with further 93+ point upside.

Flight 2 - Rouge (7 notes)

Red
2010 La Pousse d'Or Corton-Clos du Roi France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
flawed
Corked
Red
2009 Faiveley Corton-Clos des Cortons Faiveley France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
93 points
I haven’t tasted this wine in 5 years and was unsure if it would ever shut down. Well...it has partly shut down. There is still so much here with intense concentration and depth, just more firm than I recall. Still a great wine in its early stages, I’m excited to see where this emerges when really ready, probably 2029 forward.
Red
2002 Louis Latour Corton-Grancey France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
86 points
Enjoyable enough, but seemingly older and lacking Grand Cru density.
Red
2002 Bouchard Père et Fils Corton-Le Corton France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
91 points
Ripe black and red cherry, with fully supportive structure. Everything is nicely balanced and harmonious, I’d just want slightly more depth, which is slightly surprising because when young I thought this might be a powerhouse that might have trouble fully resolving.

Popped, decanted and poured after a handful of disappointing Cortons. This certainly did not disappoint. Black and red cherry with structure always in the near background. Meaty in a Gevrey fashion, and also clearly showing Grand Cru density. Showcasing 2002 vintage ripeness well, this also stays balanced and harmonious start-to-finish. Very good now. Probably my Wine of the Night.

Flight 3 - Sec (1 note)

White - Sweet/Dessert
1988 Château d'Yquem France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
93 points
Leftovers from several days earlier, this was almost just as enjoyable, perhaps just slightly less bright. Not ultra sweet, but so balanced and enjoyable with good+ length.
