M&PD Zoom Tasting: Burgundy & Barolo

Zoom

Tasted December 2, 2020 by Eric with 176 views

Introduction

This was our second group tasting with bottles decanted into small mini-bottles and delivered to the group just before the tasting. I was skeptical about how the wines would hold up, but frankly it has worked incredibly well and yielded two amazing tastings.

Flight 1 (6 notes)

White
1999 Domaine Leroy Corton-Charlemagne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
Wow, just wow. So aromatically rich. Flint and snap on the nose. Palate screams of lime zest, salt and great acidity. As Mark says, "as good as it gets."

1990 Mommessin Clos de Tart France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de Tart Grand Cru
Glowing robe, just ethereal color. Smoky, sultry, gunpowder, sexy, some tobacco, an ethereal palate. Soaring and savory but then plumbing into the earthy depths of mushroom and earth. This is just prototypical Burg. Gorgeous, just gorgeous.

1993 Domaine Dujac Echezeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
Is this the oldest wine? Wow, just a hammer! Spicy, cedar, stunning, cinnamon, beautiful red fruit!

1998 Gaja Langhe Nebbiolo Sperss Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC
Picked successfully as Nebbiolo and hoped it was my wine. Very forward, seemed to suggest Gaja and some hints of Barbera. Wow, this does have TONS of tannin, tarry, barely budged. This has miles in the tank but is incredibly pleasurable.

1999 Domaine Anne Gros Clos Vougeot Le Grand Maupertui France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
Guessed as Nebbiolo, wrong! STERN, DARK, piss and vitamin pill. This is a monster, totally different from the other Burgs.

1997 Bartolo Mascarello Barolo Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
I was a little stumped on this one. Murky, muddy and cloudy, is this right? Tangerine elements throughout. Surprisingly soft and resolved. This has no obvious flaw, but it feels like it is not an ideal example, throwing tons of fine sediment.
