New Year's Eve Dinner

Herald & Teni's Place, Hong Kong

Herald and Teni had three couples over for cocktails, dinner and Champagne to see in the new year.

The food, the company and the wines were all excellent....thanks for all the hard work in the kitchen Teni!

Flight 1 - Cocktails (0 notes)

Herald has got into making his own cocktails during the Covid home restrictions - my Negroni was gorgeous.

Flight 2 - Burgundy (1 note)

The Burgundy and the other red wines were drank over a lovely succession of 'tapas' style dishes.

2007 Sylvain Cathiard Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Semi translucent almost black-red. Nose is almost pencil lead precision, forest floor, fresh large strawberries, very small red berries. Palate is absolutely fabulous... quite stunning, the epitome of forest floor, crisp acidity, gorgeous integration of fruit, oak and lovely early secondary elements starting to show. Very whole but with a decade or two ahead of it to fully develop. 92 for now but will clearly go considerably higher in the future.

Flight 3 - Bordeaux (1 note)

2002 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
91 points
Decanted for 2-3 hours. Still opaque black-red, lightening at the meniscus. Nose is beef cattle barn, nail varnish remover, savoury beef broth, slight traces of cedar. Palate is really typical youthfully mature Paullic. loads of cedar, very deep black and red currant fruits. Has the lovely typical GPL belly-filling richness. Good length. This was a more robust bottle than one drank from the same case a few months ago. This a few more years ahead of it at this plateau but I doubt it will improve. Really excellent QPR.

Flight 4 - Barolo (1 note)

Beef wrapped with Japanese mushrooms

2000 Giacomo Brezza e Figli Barolo Sarmassa Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
87 points
Semi-opaque black-red in the glass. Light, slightly dilute, fresh prunes, smelly socks. Palate is fresh, light and lifted. Nice tannin structure but all rather dilute. Difficult to associate with classic Barolo. Not built for long cellaring. This would be a good lunchtime wine....interesting but somewhat outclassed over tonight's dinner.

Flight 5 - Napa (1 note)

Wagyu Beef satay 'Indonesian' style.....which was delicious.

2005 Pahlmeyer Proprietary Red USA, California, Napa Valley

Massive heavy bottle. Decanted for 2 hours then rebottled for another 4 (which was about right). Lots of sediment. Very distinctly purple-red colour with a translucent core. Initial nose is sun-warmed black asphalt, tar, very deep but quite shy red Berry, currant and plum fruits, hints of fresh-bruised thyme. This really unfurled after the double-decant. Palate on opening is brightly fresh and light acidity, good tannic spine but well-integrated with young black bramble and blueberry fruit, soft oak, surprisingly un-alcoholic for its 15% alcohol. Still primary but entering early secondary stage with a warm and rounded, welcoming character. Wow...this really blossomed after the long double-decant and filled out significantly. Lovely expression of fruit and oak. On decanting, there is a big finish lurking in the background inside the head but at the the moment it is like a bear that has just woken up from hibernation but hasn’t roared yet, just growled sleepily. After the double-decant the length and resonance has emerged more from its winter cave. Young but already showing its full pedigree and potential. This has at least a decade to improve unless you like you Napa reds very fruit-dominant. Everyone enjoyed this. The double-decant added two points to our initial score of 92.

Flight 6 - French Artisanal Cheeses (1 note)

I figured that the power of the fully-mature Kistler might suit the cheeses more than having it with some of the salad-based tapas....this worked well.

2006 Kistler Chardonnay Vine Hill Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

Decanted for an hour then re-bottled for three more before serving. Deep golden bright urine colour. Big legs. On decanting the nose is very reticent ... yellow daisies (not what I was expecting), yellow Chinese rice wine, an empty tennis ball tube, some dried mandarin peel....opens up a lot more with time. On opening the palate is thick, mouth coating, balanced medium acidity, steamed yellow Chinese chicken skin, fresh figs, very slight almond-driven oxidation, deep yellow stone fruits. Quite strong fruit stone tannin but which frames the wine well although it calls for drinking with food. Big and long inside the head on the finish. Absolutely lovely with runny French cheeses, especially Epoisses and Saint Nectaire. My last and best bottle of a case bought on release. 93+

Flight 7 - Ribero del Duoro (1 note)

2018 Bodegas Mauro Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León Terreus Paraje de Cueva Baja Spain, Castilla y León, Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León
88 points
Apparently this is made by Vega Sicilia but I can't find any reference to this. Left until last of the reds because of the Tempranillo grape and its extreme was only released in September 2020. Super-opaque bottomless black-red in appearance. Nose of anthracite coal, black slab from 2001 Space Odyssey...totally impenetrable but somehow there is still something alluring there. Palate is much more open - relatively speaking - with lovely high-end milk chocolate and very dense black fruit. Very young but still suggesting its hidden charms. I suspect that the nose may never open up before the palate peaks, given the wine was only in barrel for 20 months. Interesting. Hard to score but maybe 89 for its potential to improve by 2022-2023.

Flight 8 - Port (1 note)

Red - Fortified
1970 Quinta do Noval Porto Vintage Portugal, Douro, Porto
93 points
Popped and poured. Almost transparent deep garnet colour. immediately lovely nose, very lifted, light and almost diaphanous raspberry and strawberry. Palate is very sweet and deep and pure... like you have plunged into a decompression chamber. Incredibly reverberant inside the head and very long. Probably fully mature but no sign of deterioration. Fabulous with a medium strength vintage cigar. Wow! 93+

Flight 9 - Midnight - Champagne (2 notes)

Two super champagnes, both probably at full maturity.

White - Sparkling
2000 Billecart-Salmon Champagne Brut Millésimé France, Champagne

Incredibly crisp and precise. Taut. Crisp but probably fully mature. Somwhat bettered by the Champagne Barnaut 2000 we drank alongside it....but super. Happy New Year!
White - Sparkling

Deep gold. Microscopic bubbles. Taut precise nose. Very fresh cut. Signature gunpowder element. Very resonant and powerful on a long finish. Absolutely gorgeous. Probably fully mature. Happy New Year! 94+

A really memorable New Year's Eve to bid 'adieu' to a horrible 2020.
