Introduction

Mambo camp has an excellent South African wine list. I cherry picked some of the best items to enjoy over three days.

Flight 1 (5 notes)

Red
2017 Sadie Family Columella South Africa, Coastal Region, Swartland
95 points
If big jammy New World Syrah is your gig, apply elsewhere. This beautiful and elegant South African kept gaining point after point on my scorecard as it opened up from PnP through a 1.5 hour dinner. The flavors are subtle and elegant. I'd suggest dried red (not black) fruit, herbs, and tobacco. Loved it.

White - Sweet/Dessert
2018 Mullineux Chenin Blanc Straw Wine South Africa, Coastal Region, Swartland
93 points
Intensely sweet. Apricot, mango, honey. Thought my 14-year-old twin boys might like it for that reason, but I was wrong. Beautiful flavor without the complexity and length, at this point, to inch above 95 points from me.
Red
2018 De Toren Fusion V South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch
92 points
After 45 minutes of opening, this started to sing. Licorice and menthol were the notable features. This is a dryer style, not extracted. Excellent wine.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2015 Klein Constantia Vin de Constance South Africa, Coastal Region, Cape Peninsula, Constantia
95 points
Yummy, long, and complex. Peach, orange, cantaloupe. First time enjoying this famous dessert wine, and it won me over.

Took a flyer from the Mombo Camp wine list. Not a bottle I'd order again.
