The 2018 UGCB tasting Amsterdam 6/21/2021

Amsterdam, Amstel Boathouse

Tasted June 21, 2021 by FransS with 319 views

Introduction

A perfect organization by Perswijn; corona requires a tasting with a minimum of walking people; it worked due to excellent sommeliers (so thanks to Noël and his team) and Perswijn succeeded.

Flight 1 (64 notes)

Red
2018 Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
95 points
A starting development and ripeness in the wine, vanilla, elegant wood, pepper in the nose, firm, not super refined, good bitters and a long aftertaste.

Red
2018 Domaine de Chevalier France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
95 points
Less firm and concentrated than Les Carmes, but a bit more juicy, a bit more pronounced citrus, elegant and refined.

Red
2018 Château Haut-Bailly France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
97 points
In every young vintage of Haut-Bailly you have to pull out the complexity ; more reserved than the other '18 wines; enormous concentration, far more than in les Carmes and Domaine de Chevalier, lots of elegant power combined with complexity.

Red
2018 Château Malartic-Lagravière France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
93 points
Flowers in the bouquet, elegance, less concentration than the top, noticeable in the aftertaste; however the overall impression is quite positive.
Red
2018 Château Pape Clément France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
94 points
Positively modest in its wood and vanilla, fraicheur, classic in its style, concentration, but misses that 'something special' of e.g. Haut-Bailly.

Red
2018 Château Smith Haut Lafitte France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
96 points
Very elegant vanilla, a whiff of yeast (positive), lots of elegant power, balanced, nearly, nearly, the Haut-Bailly level.

Red
2018 Château Balestard La Tonnelle France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
93 points
A lovely fresh bouquet, a certain evolution in the wine is noticeable.
There is a good balance in the midtaste followed by smooth tannins and a finish with a medium length; a surprise.
Red
2018 Château Canon France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
97 points
The colour younger than of most other '18's; cherries, soft peppers, a kind of cool/sleek taste, super elegant, concentrated as H-B and S H-L.

Red
2018 Château Canon-la-Gaffelière France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
94 points
A creamy bouquet with red fruit, tasty, but not as expressive and complex as the top wines; yet lovely.

Red
2018 Clos Fourtet France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
94 points
Tasted twice, a very lively colour, fraicheur and fruit in the bouquet, very charming, but missing the real conviction in the second part of the taste; not at the level of Canon (at least this bottle!).
Red
2018 Château Larcis Ducasse France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
96 points
Creamy, a kind of wow-effect in the mouth; the wine seems to explode, juicy, concentrated; something special.

Red
2018 Château Pavie Macquin France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
95 points
A bit gloomy colour, classic style, not severe, a bit hefty and there is a lot to taste in this wine; overall very good.

Red
2018 Château Troplong Mondot France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
96 points
Freshness, peppers, lovely citrus, a bit sturdy, but absolutely top.
Red
2018 Château Trotte Vieille France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
95 points
Lovely colour, cassis, violets, vanilla, a very elegant bouquet, juicy, not super complex, but very close to the top wines.
Red
2018 Château Valandraud France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
95 points
A whiff of (charming) yeast, hardly comparable to the other Saint-Emilion wines, a bit reserved, elegant, needs time; has probably the capacity to gain a point in future.
Red
2018 Château Le Bon Pasteur France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
91 points
Quite ripe, some mocha, friendly, juicy, a bit short and missing the punch to convince really, however a nice wine.
Red
2018 Château Clinet France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
94 points
A charming bouquet, everything in the plus compared to the Le Bon Pasteur, not really convincing in the midtaste, but in the concentrated aftertaste there is a rematch. I suggest room for a point more in future.

Red
2018 Château La Croix de Gay France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
95 points
The bouquet is still quite closed, but there is a lot to come and there is more excitement in the midtaste compared to the Clinet. The refinement in the aftertaste is exemplary.
Red
2018 Château Gazin Pomerol France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
94 points
Very friendly bouquet (flowers, fruit), in the mouth there is a certain modesty, but the second part of the taste is very balanced.
Red
2018 Château Petit Village France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
93 points
Friendly, spicy, juicy, in the finish firm tannins; all together a very nice wine.
Red
2018 Château La Pointe France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
91 points
Juicy, peppery, but not too, well made, not very complex, medium length, nice.
Red
2018 Château Chasse-Spleen France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Moulis en Médoc
90 points
Friendly in the start, lighter in weight than the top wines, firm tannins, still a juicy style, but I had expected a bit more.
Red
2018 Château Poujeaux France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Moulis en Médoc
92 points
Charming, lively and spicy bouquet, more expressive than the Chasse-Spleen, also more body, quite juicy, and tasty tannins; I like this wine.
Red
2018 Château de Camensac France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc
92 points
Surprisingly charming, a gentle kind of ripeness and sweetness beside the fruit in the bouquet, and in the taste it continues; volume and balance in the aftertaste; lovely.
Red
2018 Château Cantemerle France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc
89 points
Quite light, the wine opens friendly, gentle (after)taste, but, at least this bottle, didn't impress me.

Red
2018 Château La Tour Carnet France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc
88 points
Nothing seemed wrong withe the bottle, hardly no bouquet, a certain sweetness, very light; a kind of deception.
Red
2018 Château Cantenac Brown France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
94 points
If you are looking for a representative Margaux, don't take Cantenac-Brown, but if you like a, at the moment still closed, quite classic, concentrated, but never too serious Bordeaux with also a friendly smoothness after some years and the capability of ageing often glorious (ah, once the '66), than this '18 has, I think, the components for a good future.
Red
2018 Château Giscours France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
95 points
At the UGCB tasting this wine had the most elegant and expressive bouquet, so Margaux, with violets, perfumed, super, very stylish in its taste, 'noblesse'; not a powerhouse, but a kind of fragrant persistence, again I notice it, Margaux-elegance.

Red
2018 Château Kirwan France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
90 points
Not comparable with the Giscours, nice, friendly, some smoothnes, but worth the cellar?
Red
2018 Château Lascombes France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
93 points
A good Margaux, nice flowery bouquet, smooth, quite refined, and a certain persistence, but no extravagancy I hoped a bit for.
Red
2018 Château Prieuré-Lichine France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
91 points
Ripe and spicy in a soft style, tasty, but no real complexity and a bit flat in the midtaste.
Red
2018 Château Rauzan-Ségla France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
94 points
Difficult for me to assess, closed, but showing much power and balance (already); most of it is behind the curtain, but it doesn't worry me.

Red
2018 Château Siran France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
93 points
The depth of colour is like the best on this UGCB tasting, a powerful bouquet with deep down black fruit, very good backbone with the necessary citrus and persistence in the aftertaste, has a good future; effortless GCC level.
Red
2018 Château du Tertre France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
91 points
The bouquet is a bit muted, the (mid)taste is tasty and there is sufficient body, but I was looking for a bit more,
Red
2018 Château Beychevelle France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
95 points
An exiting bouquet, red and black fruit, but (a little warning?) a whiff of kirsch, elegant power (level: iron fist, silk glove), very edible and ripe tannins, long aftertaste; a kind of surprise for me.
Red
2018 Château Branaire-Ducru France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
94 points
Tea, iron, I've noticed this more often with older vintages of Branaire; normally it it is a sign of ripeness, but not in this young wine. It is a part of the complexity of this classic made wine with an interesting tension.

Red
2018 Château Gloria France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
91 points
Let's start with the best part, there is power in the aftertaste and the wine is juicy, but at the moment there is hardly any bouquet and I miss complexity; possibly future will help this wine gaining points.
Red
2018 Château Lagrange (St. Julien) France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
92 points
A bit restless in the nose, some kirsch, in the taste there is an impression of alcohol, but lovely taste, good, not great and in the aftertaste still some alcohol.
Red
2018 Château Langoa Barton France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
94 points
Cigars, cedar, really Pauillac, class, not super concentrated, but showing grandeur.
Red
2018 Château Léoville Barton France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
97 points
Like the Haut-Bailly everything has to come from the depths, complexity, concentration superbly balanced (very well dosed citrus), perfect tannins; superb future.

2018 Château Léoville Poyferré France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
95 points
From nose to finish absolutely lovely. hints of mocha, but missing the complexity and the refined dimensions of Léoville-Barton, but, for sure, a very good L-P.

2018 Château Saint-Pierre France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
92 points
A bit one-dimensional bouquet. juicy, tasty, nice from start to finish, but I had expected a bit more.
Red
2018 Château Talbot France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
93 points
The centenary bottle is quite special; there is a lovely attaque in the mouth, a gentle and juicy midtaste, not complex, but balanced, aftertaste with a medium length.
Red
2018 Château Batailley France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
94 points
Fraicheur in the bouquet, very powerful, even a bit hefty, but everything on the right place, noticeable tannins, not polished; I like this monster.
Red
2018 Château Clerc Milon France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
94 points
A modest bouquet and a bit shy start in the mouth, but than the wine revenges in the second part of the taste and the aftertaste with concentration and a solid balance. I think there is more to come in future.
Red
2018 Château Lynch-Bages France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
94 points
Closed bouquet, power, lots of power, but missing complexity, as Léoville-Barton has, not so impressive.
Red
2018 Château Cos Labory France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
93 points
Serious, juicy, even jummy, not severe, as a Saint-Estèphe can be.
Balanced midtaste, good tannins, above expectation; this wine has surprised me.
Red
2018 Château Lafon-Rochet France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
91 points
The bouquet is 'bien corsé', but after this bouquet the wine does not really fill in the promises.
Red
2018 Château Carbonnieux France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
91 points
A friendly, flowery bouquet, juicy, but missing a bit conviction in the midtaste followed, fortunately by a firm an good aftertaste; give this wine some time.
Red
2018 Château Larrivet-Haut-Brion France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
89 points
Lighter in its performance than the Carbonnieux, however friendly and with a firm finish, but I had expected a bit more (the 2000 is very good!).
Red
2018 Château La Tour-Martillac France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
94 points
A high level, balanced from start to finish, not super concentrated, but this wine compensates with elegance, refinement and balance.

2018 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
94 points
Starting with very much wood, but with aeration (i gave this wine some time), the balance arrived, some fat, a whiff of wax and lovely citrus and absolutely less wood. This wine will become very enjoyable, but give it time.
White
2018 Château La Tour-Martillac Blanc France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
93 points
More accessible than the Domaine de Chevalier, soft spices, fraicheur, a hint of mint and tasty, very tasty.
White
2018 Château Malartic-Lagravière Blanc France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
94 points
A bit sturdy, classic, lovely wood/vanilla, juicy, fruit underneath and a very good balance; taste this wine and love it.

2018 Château de Fieuzal Blanc France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
90 points
A shy bouquet, charming, but missing conviction for me.
White
2018 Château Pape Clément Blanc France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
95 points
More approachable than the Domaine de Chevalier, the wood and vanilla are very well dosed and integrated, very juicy at a very high level with a convincing citrus backbone; balance is the key word.
White
2018 Château Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
95 points
Maybe a tad less charm than the Pape-Clement but, to compensate, a very impressive aftertaste.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2018 Château Coutet France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Barsac
94 points
A very flowery bouquet, super fresh, perfect citrus, light on its feet, playful, that all compensates the medium body.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2018 Château Clos Haut-Peyraguey France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
91 points
Sweeter than Coutet, less balanced, less bouquet, less expressive.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2018 Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
92 points
Nice bouquet, nice medium body, sufficient fraicheur, for a while I thought I smelled a bit VA, but it disappeared quickly.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2018 Château Doisy-Védrines France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
94 points
Very lovely, no heavyweight, but everything in a very good balance, due to a refreshing backbone.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2018 Château de Rayne-Vigneau France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
90 points
Nice, but not distinctive, maybe time will help this wine.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2018 Château Sigalas Rabaud France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
92 points
A nice wine, not spectacular, but everything on the right place; a good backbone.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2018 Château La Tour Blanche Sauternes France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
94 points
Classic bouquet, good botrytis, the backbone has weight and ripe citrus, balanced, très Sauternes.

Closing

This 2018 vintage has shown to me a large bunch of good, but not so expressive, often even a bit woolly, wines. The small top is top, although not as super as many of the 2015 or 2016 wines. Sometimes I recognized kirsch and that indicates a high level of alcohol. I found the Saint-Emilion and the Pessac wines a tad better than the other appellations.
Some of the unexpected favorites of mine are Giscours, Cantenac-Brown, Siran, TrotteVieille and Malartic-Lagravière white.
