Introduction

A group of twelve people gathered round the table to do some serious wine drinking. The wines in the original line-up were all selected from the restaurant wine list. The bonus bottles were offered by the restaurant to put certain wines in context, or brought by participants.

Flight 1 - The original line-up (18 notes)

White - Sparkling
2007 Salon Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut France, Champagne
93 points
Steely nose, flowers and chalk, aromatic green herbs, green and yellow apple; the palate is relatively soft and round, creamy lemon, good weight, ripe acidity, rich texture; complete finish, very good length.

White
2010 Château Mouton Rothschild Aile D'Argent Blanc France, Bordeaux
93 points
Marvellous nose, perfumed, wonderful exotique; rich and ripe palate, soft but fresh acidity, precise and clean, gentle oak influence, subtle vegetal notes, excellent length. Very impressive.

White
2016 Weingut Keller Hubacker Riesling Großes Gewächs Germany, Rheinhessen
93 points
Initially closed and yeasty nose with a hint of spontaneous fermentation, opens up nicely, flowers and chalk, hint of tropical fruit; juicy and supple palate, quite soft for a youngish Hubacker, much richer and rounder than the tight and energetic bottle tasted in 2019. Either there is a lot of bottle variation, or this wine is developing very quickly.

White
2007 Egon Müller Scharzhofberger Riesling Kabinett Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Surprisingly evolved, rich and sweeter than I had anticipated, hint of caramel, improves with oxygen, becomes fresher and more floral, salted lemon, but ultimately lacks freshness and elegance. There must be better bottles. Not rated.
White
2016 François Raveneau Chablis Grand Cru Valmur France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
95 points
Rich and luxurious but with great stylistic precision, inimitable terroir expression and Raveneau typicity, hint of reduction, creamy lemon, delicately honeyed, whiff of tropical fruit, concentrated but elegant, satiny texture, excellent resonance and length with a hint of nuttiness.

White
2004 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage Blanc France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
94 points
Almost skeletal when first poured, tired and oxidative, needs a lot of time and oxygen to open up but does so beautifully, develops complex and deep aromas over a number of hours in the glass, wonderfully rich and classical Hermitage Blanc, harmonious interplay of granite minerality and rich Marsanne, velvety texture, honeysuckle, angelica, long. Keep this in the cellar for another five to ten years, or give it a long decant.

2017 Coche-Dury Meursault 1er Cru Les Genevrières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
95 points
A beguiling young Genevrières, so refined and precise, silky and playful, layered and complex, gentle and generous, dances across the palate, long and dreamy finish. Very charming and remarkably accessible, defined by terroir rather than producer.
White
2017 Arnaud Ente Meursault France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
93 points
More matchstick on the nose than the Coche-Dury Genevrieres which accompanied it, rich and Burgundian, not the definition and precision of the Genevrieres terroir though, solid and impressive, good power and weight, excellent length. Top notch village.
Red
2013 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Echezeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
94 points
Bottle No. 03494 from 8,878 bottles produced. Spectacular nose, black fruit, orange zest and a touch of salt, lifted and pure, lovely oak; elegant and slender palate, cool style, paper-fine tannins, slightly vegetal, very fragrant but lacks a bit of ripeness and weight; good but not exceptional length. Extra point for the nose.
Red
2012 Domaine G. Roumier / Christophe Roumier Bonnes Mares France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
94 points
Made from various plots, about 60% Terres Rouges and 40% Terres Blanches. Rich blue Pinot fruit, powerful and ever so slightly rustic, good dollop of new oak (low toast), rather monolithic at present and very tannic, robust and concentrated but lacks finesse, very long but slightly dry and light finish. This will need many years in the cellar to mature, but it will always be a burly wine.
Red
2005 Antinori Solaia Toscana IGT Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
94 points
Rich and ripe and deep, broad shouldered, cedar, deep and classical, powerful and fresh, nice touch of Cabernet pyrazines, firmly structured but with enough generosity, very good length.
Red
2003 Tenuta San Guido Bolgheri Sassicaia Sassicaia Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri, Bolgheri Sassicaia
91 points
Wonderfully expressive and warm nose, hint of chocolate, firm but slightly drying tannins, rather pinched finish. Drink soon.
Red
2007 Château Rayas Châteauneuf-du-Pape Reserve France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
95 points
Outstanding but not spectacular nose, lacks the ultimate wow-factor, slightly earthy. Rich and elegant style on the palate, ripe, rosehip and red berries, spices, red meat, gentle tannins, creamy length. Excellent Rayas typicity but this bottle seems a bit muted, without the real Reynaud magic.
Red
2005 Château Lynch-Bages France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
93 points
Classic Cabernet nose, good ripe fruit, firm structure but not austere, has a certain elegance, dusty but finely grained tannins, marries weight and a modicum of finesse.

Red
2004 Château Margaux France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
93 points
Wonderful Margaux fragrance, elegant, on the lighter side, just a hint of green, good length. Displays the typical Margaux charm and finesse on the nose, but the palate does not escape the vicissitudes of the vintage.
Red
2004 Château Haut-Brion France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
93 points
Light body, slender, hint of evolution, earthy, slightly drying tannins, tell-tale bricky warmth but light in style, exactly what you would expect from Haut-Brion in 2004. I would suggest drinking this sooner rather than later.
Red
2009 Pétrus France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
95 points
Unformed, monolithic, big and very extracted, concentrated, incredibly young, enormous potential, powerful new oak, earth and clay, slightly tarry, red cherries, long. Nowhere near maturity. Very hard to score, but certainly not much fun today. Cautious score.
White - Sweet/Dessert
1970 Château d'Yquem France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
92 points
Deep amber colour. Tired and oxidative initially but opens up nicely, rich but slightly drying, nuts and spices, honey, rich oak, concentrated, powerful, vanilla, very good length. Chunky rather than charming

Flight 2 - A few bonus bottles (5 notes)

White
1992 Château Mouton Rothschild Aile D'Argent Blanc France, Bordeaux
92 points
Brought by David. Fresh for age, not tired at all, harmonious and well integrated, golden grapes, hint of spice, only very slight vegetal notes, ripe lemon, supple and with good persistence. A lovely surprise.
White
2017 Coche-Dury Bourgogne Blanc France, Burgundy, Bourgogne Blanc
88 points
Offered by the restaurant. Competent Bourgogne Blanc, nice fruit and precision, supple and juicy, quite easy, floral and with a nice finish.
Red
2004 Château Trotanoy France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
89 points
Offered by the restaurant. Black tea, drying, lacks generosity, green tannins.
Red
2019 Maison Leroy Bourgogne Gamay France, Burgundy, Bourgogne
87 points
Offered by the restaurant. Essentially an acceptable but very expensive Beaujolais. Tight, green apple, red cherries.
White - Off-dry
2006 Schloss Lieser Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Lange Goldkapsel Auction Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
94 points
Brought by Sjaak. AP 10 07. Rich and honeyed, concentrated and long, flowers and slate, pure, elegant but not tightly wound, feels quite soft and sweet today, very good length. A bit loose.
