Rose Tasting

Our house

Introduction

What started out as a comparison between Nervi and Sperino's Rosati and then Pibarnon and Tempier's rose turned into a full on rose tasting with some of my favorite rose's and a few others I had never heard of.

To me, the Tempier's complexity and the Sperino's intensity, powerful perfumey nose put them at the top for me. I would have happily drank any of these alone, though. There were a few others that I didn't bother to take notes on, as they just didn't grab my attention.

Flight 1 (7 notes)

Rosé
2019 Nervi-Conterno Il Rosato Italy, Piedmont, Piemonte DOC
I've been enjoying this wine, but tonight it was completely overshadowed by the same vintage Sperino Rosato. The Sperino was more interesting, intense and complex.
Rosé
2020 Proprietà Sperino Piemonte Rosa del Rosa Italy, Piedmont, Piemonte DOC
PSPatrick's note describes this well. We drank this along side a Nervi Rosato of the same vintage, and this wine blew it away. It was one of my favorite roses of the night actually, along with the Tempier, which is twice as expensive. By far the most intense nose of all the wines. Complex, interesting, and good value here.

Rosé
2019 Château de Pibarnon Bandol Rosé France, Provence, Bandol
We drank this along with a Tempier of the same vintage. This was perfectly fine, but lacked the complexity of the Tempier. The Tempier had some light savory, earthy accents that set it apart from all the roses we had tonight.

Rosé
2019 Domaine Tempier Bandol Rosé France, Provence, Bandol
We first drank this along side a Pibarnon, and a couple other Bandol roses, then I came back and compared with some of the rosato's. In comparison with the others, this is more complex, with hints of savory and even earthy accents. Complex, refreshing and first class rose. I had really hoped that the Pibarnon would be indistinguishable from it, but this was more complex and interesting in comparison.

Rosé
2019 Gérard Boulay Sancerre Rosé France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre
Compared with the other roses of the night, this one showed more pale strawberry and red berry fruit. The Bandol and Italian roses all showed more unripe melon, citrus and orange/tangerine like notes. This was very good.

White
2019 Schäfer-Fröhlich Spätburgunder Fröhlich Blanc de Noir trocken Germany, Nahe
It has been a few vintages since I have had this wine, and I had forgotten how good it was. Refreshing and very chuggable. A white wine made from Pinot Noir, I believe. I need to start buying these again.
Rosé
2020 G.D. Vajra Rosabella Italy, Piedmont, Vino da Tavola
Tart pale red fruits, citrus, spice. I found the nose to be interesting on this, sometimes getting spices, and once even tobacco I thought. I'd like to come back and try this on it's own sometime.
