Flight 1 - The Welcome (1 note)

White
2011 Château Lynch-Bages Blanc de Lynch-Bages France, Bordeaux
92 points
Its been 2 years since we had this last ( Papies 91) and a joy to cross paths with it again. Definitely undervalued beauty here and real value for money.
Bright and energetic still at 10yrs old, very much a sauvignon blanc nose now but on the palate is richer, honey notes and with a soft feel of oak. Very round and full wine and very charming. 92

Flight 2 - Good Oldies (3 notes)

1978 Château Canon France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

What a great surprise here. Granted the wine is well past its best but still coming across old wines like this from relatively off vintages that have aged nicely and are still healthy and well behaved at a tertiary state.
Still alive on the fruit, nice dark fruit feel, good acidity, soft smoky feel too and light leather. A touch dry on the palate at times albeit mostly a well round wine full of charm of old age . Granted not everyone's cup of tea, but if old and aged wines are part of your dreams this should be a good value one. 92

A questionable decade for Lynch-Bages and a lot of bottle variability in our experience but this was well behaved and even framed against the excellent 86 Talbot (Papies 95) this showed very well.
Needed its time to open up and maybe we should have decanted this in the end albeit it felt fragile and brooding on open which prompted us to just let it rest in the bottle. A lot of fine sediment here so one needs to take care. Quite a dark and powerful for the age wine, dark fruits and very healthy. What it has in terms of presence on the palate it lacks though (especially compared with the 86 Talbot) on nose. Lacked a charming open nose of aged claret frankly. Good wine still but on this occasion no more than a 92

Solid cork albeit soft, well wet, top shoulder fill. Used a bilame for removing the cork

Another great showing from this beautiful and undervalued wine. This is our 12th time we have had it (Papies 93-95) from a variety of sources ( we buy on sight ) and always well behaved and continues to evolve and deliver . Much liek its sibling the Gruaud Larosse the 80s are their golden decade.

The Nose is superb once again. Soft elegant yet singing, leather, cedar, soft spice . On the palate it is well round and with a "light elegance" , polished and silky but really that nose is enough to launch 1000 ships. Superb 94-95 once again

Solid cork, well wet, broke in 2 on opening. top shoulder fill.

Flight 3 - Survivors of 2003 and a Random Friend (3 notes)

Red
2003 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
90 points
Decanted for a good hour and we felt it needed it.
Frankly the 2003 impact is very much visible and albeit the winemaker did well to keep the alc in the 12% but still the fruit had a burnt feel and lack a fresh and elegant feel. Soft herby nose, spice and dark fruit but the 2003 is the 2003, Very similar to the Talbot 2003 we tried side by side ( Papies 90) albeit this was a bit punchier and fuller. 90-91

This is our 5th testing of this wine , first time was an 85 in 2013 as the wine was impossible to enjoy back then and during the years it has stabilized in the 90 mark .

Decanted for a good hour and every little helps here.
Much like the 2003 GPL we had side by side this is very much impacted by the 2003 vintage and albeit alc was well managed in the 12-13%. Still the fruit had that burnt , dark feel and lacked an elegant side. Its a god wine and good value just heat impacted. Good 90

Young and needs time to develop a charm. One can decant this endlessly and very little will change at this stage. Impressive density of fruit here, had a cool climate feel on the fruit, well managed oak use ( felt like old oak). Cheery nose here, soft spice and a floral finish. Good and well made wine just very very young. Patience. 89-90 for now.

Flight 4 - Finish with Gold (1 note)

White - Sweet/Dessert
2011 Château d'Yquem France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
95 points
6 years since we tasted this ( Papies 96) and loved to cross paths again.
Still very much fresh ( and utterly delicious) bright and energetic and with soft honey and apricot feel. Good use of oak here and helps the wine shine too at this stage and adds a nice weight on the palate. Harmonious and effortlessly balanced and elegant. Liquid gold. 95+
