Wine Group Picnic at Steve's

Tasted August 28, 2021 by I'd Rather Be Drinking Wine with 60 views

Introduction

This was an annual wine picnic at Steve's house, which he graciously hosts every year (except last year - Covid). It was full of great food (including a wonderful smoked brisket by our host), with tons of great wine and, of course great guests! A fun evening! I decided to pick out a hand full (or maybe two) of wines I wanted to try, and focus on those, rather than trying to sample all the great wines provided. Below are my notes, hope you enjoy reading them as much as I enjoyed drinking them!

Flight 1 - The Main Event! (8 notes)

PnP - Wow! What an awesome wine and right in my wheelhouse! The best wine of the tasting, that I tasted! Nose was full of perfumed flower, dark fruit and tertiary flavors that. included smoked meat, tobacco and cedar, with shades of sweet toasted oak. What really set this wine apart was the silky mouthfeel that accompanied the rainbow of flavors. This was already my favorite wine, but almost rose to another level when paired with a smoked brisket. Wish I had some of this in my cellar! Just awesome! Got even better with time.

double decanted at 2:00 for a 5:00 wine tasting. This bottle was amazing! Nose showed black and red fruit, leather, earth and tobacco, with hints of spice and bramble. The palate followed suit with a nice balance between fruit and tertiary flavors. This was right in my wheelhouse! My number two wine of the night amongst some very fine wines!

This wine has the fortitude to go for another 5 years without losing any of the flavors that make this wine stand out. An excellent wine that makes you stand up and take notice! A good value and a great wine, IMO! No hurry, but you will not be disappointed if you open one soon!

PnP - this wine reminded me of the Santana song "Smooth", because that is the bestseller way to describe this wine...it was smooooooooth! The wine showed plenty of complexity, with layers of black fruit, tobacco, forest floor, leather and a touch of oak. The wine kept improving throughout the evening, which tells me you don't need to be in any hurry to drink this, and although delicious with the PnP, this wine still would be even better with 1 - 2 hour decant. Drink or hold, but an easy 96, even now! Fun watching this wine evolve in the glass!

2013 Shea Wine Cellars Pinot Noir Block 23 Shea Vineyard USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Yamhill-Carlton

PnP from a mag - This wine was drinking well, and would be even more enjoyable if drinking by itself. The wine showed lots of fruit, especially dark cherry, with hints of some red fruits and some herbs and spiced, with a tough of earth, forest floor and some sweet oak. The wine still shows a fair amount of acidity and liveliness. This wine still drank fairly young, but it was a mag, so keep that in mind while reading these notes. This bottle was young and you should be in no hurry to drink. I would think, based on how this bottle performed, that the .750's would be drinking even better. Also, please note that when I tasted this wine, it had been sitting in a bottle for about an hour and thirty minutes, and further improved with time the glass. 92 points with slight potential for improvement.

PnP from a mag - (Note: I hate the wax capsules)

Not sure about some of these low scores on CT, and I am not a huge fan of the 13 vintage in Oregon, like some on here (yes, I know it was a cool vintage and I know you had to know when to pick), but this wine was drinking quite well, and makes me put away some of my initial buyers remorse! I thought this wine was drinking the best of the three Pinot's I tasted (13 Shea Block 23 and 16 Kosta Brown SC).

Nose and palate displayed typical Dundee cherry notes with some bramble and herbs, and a earthy/woodsy flavor lurking in the background. There is just enough acidity to keep the wine lively. Easy 93 and no hurry to drink this, even though it is drinking quite well now.

2016 Kosta Browne Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

PnP out of Mag - This wine was a pleasant surprise, as I have not had many Kosta Brown wines. Showed plenty of red fruit on the nose and palate, although this wine also had a nice floral bouquet too. Palate also showed some earth and spice on the finish. This is definitely a fruit forward wine, but tastes delicious! Finish was medium, but very smooth. An enjoyable young pinot that is drinking quite well young. 92+

2010 Peter Michael Chardonnay Ma Belle-Fille USA, California, Sonoma County, Knights Valley

PnP from Mag - My first Peter Michael Chardonnay, and different from my expectations. I expected it would be a big, rich, buttery oaky chardonnay, and it was far from it. Not a good or bad thing, just different! The nose was dominated by white flowers and some lemon notes. This wine was well integrated with lots of citrus and pear notes, and showed quite a bit of minerality. A very nice wine, and worthy of its reputation! 93+ for my palate.

PnP from Mag - This was a very nice wine and drinking quite well. I thought it on par with the 2010 Peter Michael Ma Belle Fille, which makes this an excellent QPR! The palate was floral, with honeysuckle the most prevalent, and a hint of sea breeze; the palate was slightly buttery (just enough, IMO) with plenty of citrus, pear, melon and minerality, with a touch of sweet toasted oak. Drinking really well right now out of a Magnum, but .750's should also be drinking quite well, IMO. 93+

How can you ever go wrong with sharing good food and good wines with good friends? It was nice catching up with some people I rarely see these days and meeting some new people! Already looking forward to next year!
