IMO, winemaker dinners such as these are undoubtedly the best way to sample wines. The quantity and time give you an opportunity to see the wine evolve and gives insight pairings that you might not otherwise consider. For me, These are really the two great pleasures of wines. This was a unique because I would not expect the "House of Big Reds" to plan a dinner around a shell fish.

Flight 1 - Reception - Hors d'oeurve (1 note)

Crab Cakes
Crab Soup
Crab Coleslaw in Filio Dough

2002 St. Francis Chardonnay USA, California, Sonoma County
a little harsh, apple, acid, oak, nice for the price

Flight 2 - Seafood Sausage (1 note)

Seafood sausage - crab, sole, salmon with sea urchin beurre blanc

2002 St. Francis Chardonnay Behler Reserve USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Valley
buttery texture, tropical fruit, fig, oak more integrated than the Carneros. But not as good as I remember.

Flight 3 - Asian Styled Noodles (1 note)

Wok seared black bean cracked with pad thai noodles

2002 St. Francis Zinfandel Old Vines Bacchi Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
Grown on vineyeard surrounded by eucoliptus, which seems to be integrated in the wine. On the nose, blueberry and eucoliptus. On the palate, brumbleberry, blueberry, smoke and mint.

Flight 4 - Veal Oscar (1 note)

Grilled veal loin topped wtih crab served with a veal reduction and sause bearnaise; presented with white asparagus and pepper mousse

1999 St. Francis Merlot Reserve Nuns Canyon USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Valley
On the nose and palate, bell peppers and blackfruit. Also chocolate and espresso.

Flight 5 - Crab and Goat Cheese Souffle (1 note)

2000 St. Francis Cabernet Franc Lagomarsino Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
bell peppers on the nose and palate red fruit

Flight 6 - Olive Cake (0 notes)

Served with mascarpone whipped cream and mixed berries

Some of the dishes worked better than the others. Highlights included the asian style noodles paired with Zin. Not intuitive but worked nicely. Another interesting dish was the olive cake; it was exceptionally moist. Overall though I was dissappointed with the quality of the wines; this seemed to be the concensus at our table.
