Introduction

This was the annual big group summer party. It was a real treat to be able to do this again after last year. We had a great group of 32 vaccinated peeps. As usual it was Steve and Jenny as our gracious hosts. Steve did a marvelous job on the brisket and everyone contributed a mix of wonderful side dishes. There was a fun mix of wines to keep everyone satisfied. If you didn't find something you wanted to drink, you weren't trying. This was a night of socializing and small pours, so notes are brief.

Flight 1 (35 notes)

White
2012 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay USA, California, Napa Valley
93 points
Light gold color. From magnum. Drank a glass over an hour plus on consecutive nights. This has the poise that I always find in Montelena Chardonnay bringing the depth and energy while not going too far. Lovely stone fruits, pear, nectarine, apple, creamy with hints of buttered toast, great lift and acidity with a little smokiness, creamy texture, light oak spice, medium bodied with clean lively minerality - and I like Chablis28's description of fresh mountain stream minerality - that nails it.
Red
2007 Delas Frères Hermitage Marquise de la Tourette France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
92 points
Dark red plus color with a 12mm bricked transition. Splash double decanted. Very earthy, iron, blood meal, purple flowers, Provencal herbs, smoke, dark fruits garrigue, pepper. The palate is medium full bodied with cool dark fruits, blackberry, with blueberry and dark cherry influences, pepper, garrigue spices and dried herbs, nice length and complexity. This is in a good spot and was better on day 2.
Red
2003 Quilceda Creek Cabernet Sauvignon USA, Washington
94 points
Small tasting glass; brief note. This was beautiful, full, rich, concentrated but well balanced and does not push the limits for me. Just a lovely plush texture, gorgeous fruit and nice wood that is integrating. Didn't take much so did not see the evolution. I think I'd Rather Be Drinking Wine's note is very accurate for more details. This may well have been better if I could have watched it over some time.
Red
2009 Sine Qua Non Grenache Upside Down USA, California, Central Coast
93 points
Tasting pour. Brief note; Ultra ripe, smooth and big, bold, concentrated, blackberry and black raspberry, tasty and indulgent.

Small taste. Brief note; this was solid, youthful as expected, well made as always, dark fruits and wood showing with some nice firm structure. Needs another 3 to 5 years. 90pts now with upside.

Red
2011 Cristom Pinot Noir Mt. Jefferson Cuvée USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Eola - Amity Hills
88 points
Small taste. Brief note; Had this on release and now again tonight from Magnum. Not much has changed, red cherry, cola, spiced, somewhat harsh and bitter on the still tannic finish.
Red
2011 Arterberry Maresh Pinot Noir Maresh Vineyard USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills
92 points
Small glass from Magnum. Medium red color, medium bodied, red fruits, florals, earthy and great spicebox, still a bit grippy from magnum tonight. Really good, best pinot tonight. Mags are going to need a bit more time to be at peak.

White
2013 Didier Dagueneau Blanc Fumé de Pouilly France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Pouilly-Fumé
88 points
Small tasting pour. Brief note; same bottle as Bellissimo. Well this was a disappointment after a great bottle of 2016b recently. No comparison between the too. This was rough and much more pedestrian.
Rosé - Sparkling
N.V. Marc Hébrart Champagne Premier Cru Brut Rosé France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru
92 points
Small tating pour. Brief note; always happy to get a shot at drinking these. Love it and as always it did not disappoint; consistent with previous notes and a recent bottle in particular.

Red
2007 R. López de Heredia Rioja Reserva Viña Bosconia Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja

White
2018 Do Ferreiro Albariño Rías Baixas Spain, Galicia, Rías Baixas
88 points
Small tasting pour. Brief note; wow, this baby is astringent, sour citrus, high acid, aggressive, sour lemon. I need some oysters.
Red
2017 Faethm Grenache Fingers Crossed USA, California
92 points
Small tasting pour. Brief note. Tons of juicy black fruits, deep and powerful, full bodied, bold, well balanced; impressive if not really my style. Others will really love this.
Rosé - Sparkling
2014 Paul Bara Champagne Grand Cru Spécial Club Rosé France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
92 points
Small taste. Very classy and elegant and really showing well for it's youth, pretty strawberry fruit with citrus nuances, panna cotta lightness to the texture. . Enjoyed my little pour very much. Highly recommended. 92(+)pts.
Red
2007 Arcadian Syrah Hommage à Max USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Ynez Valley
92 points
Small tasting pour. Brief note; you know, I always find these very enjoyable and well made. These are classic old school, cool climate syrahs that offer oodles of old world character and style, so earthy and meaty with red fruits and medium plus body.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Vilmart & Cie Champagne Premier Cru Grand Cellier Brut France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru
Small taste. Brief note; just had this a few days ago and this bottle was right there. Maybe not the extra depth and complexity that comes with extra cellar time, but dang, this is good stuff. 92pts.

2013 Archery Summit Pinot Noir Archery Summit Estate USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills
91 points
Small glass - from magnum. Brief note; Same bottle as I'd Rather Be Drinking Wine. Good stuff, there's a good dose of red and black fruit here, but there's also a lot going on, it's well balanced and it doesn't come off sweet. May get better, 91+pts.
Red
2013 Shea Wine Cellars Pinot Noir Block 23 Shea Vineyard USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Yamhill-Carlton
90 points
Small glass, from magnum. No notes, but same bottle as I'd Rather Be Drinking Wine. Good, but I never seem to be as crazy about the single blocks. This one may benefit from 1 to 2 years.
Red
2008 Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon Estate USA, California, San Francisco Bay, Santa Cruz Mountains
91 points
Small taste. No notes. From some reason it always seems to be at the end of the night when I get to this. Wanted to check in, but just had a taste. Gut impression was 90-91, but really wasn't able to give this the evaluation it deserves. Certainly no rush.
Red
2009 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Small taste. No notes, still pretty young, but approachable with air. Impression probably 93pts with good upside.
