Introduction

First one of these for quite a while...it was lovely to see everyone again and meet some new fellows...format as normal - everyone brings a bottle or two, all served blind

Flight 1 (15 notes)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Forest-Marie Champagne Tradition Brut France, Champagne
Medium minus intensity aromas of biscuit, lemon, a little apple, slight cherry. In the mouth yeast autolysis, textured grip is chalky, mousse is softly engaging, the fruit plays second fiddle, alcohol lends a little white pepper. Interersting.
White
2016 Penfolds Chardonnay Reserve Bin 16A Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Adelaide Hills
Served Blind.
Medium plus intensity aromas of pretty stone fruit; peach mostly, toasted oak, butter, slightly nutty notes. Juicy but not overtly acidic, lemon over stone fruit, a little texture, touch of alcohol warmth lends a bit of spice. Medium plus length.
I guessed chardonnay, 2014, Margaret River
White
2010 rk by Giaconda Chardonnay Australia, Victoria, North East, Beechworth
Served Blind.
Medium minus intensity aromas are very fruit forward, mostly citrus; lemon, with a little apricot sweet spice, cream. Soft on the palate with a little tannic grip, slightly alcohol warmth, butter, apricot, lemon, richer on the palate.
I guessed Chardonnay, Victorian, 2010
White
2012 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis France, Burgundy, Chablis
Served Blind.
Herbs, slight volatility, savoury, slightly meaty notes, touches of wild ferment. Medium plus intensity acidity, lemon, tangy, lots of texture on the mid palate.
I guessed Loire Chenin
Red
2012 Domain Road Pinot Noir Bannockburn New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Bannockburn
Served Blind.
Aromas of cherry, plenty of oak spice, a little sour snake, earth...Juicy, textured grip, plums and cherry fruit, slight alcohol warmth, sweet spice. Nice
I knew this was mine.
Red
2015 Crawford River Cabernet Sauvignon Australia, Victoria, Western Victoria, Henty
Served Blind.
Smells 'dense', black hued fruits, concentrated, peppery spice, polished, toasty oak, herbaceous. Chewy, chalky tannins, savoury black hued, alcohol warmth.
I guessed SA Shiraz 2015 - total face plant from me, especially considering I'd try this at another tasting in the last fortnight...
Red
2016 Famiglia Cotarella Lazio Montiano Italy, Latium, Lazio
Served Blind.
Juicy red berries and cherries, sweet spice, red currant, slightly sweaty and tobacco notes. Medium plus intensity acidity, juicy with chalky tannins that are quite drying, quite 'wet'. Similar flavours.
I guessed Italian, Tuscany, Sangiovese 2018

Red
2019 Luigi Bosca Malbec Finca La Linda Argentina, Mendoza, Lujan de Cuyo
Served Blind.
Slightly peppery black fruits, clean but with wild ferment, controlled, slight alcohol warmth. Juicy, fleshy, peppery black fruits, tangy, tannins are chalky, textured, slight alcohol warmth on the finish.
I went with new world Syrah, funky, 2018...this wasn't very Mendoza Malbec compared to my previous experiences
Red
2018 Château du Cèdre Malbec Cahors Cèdre Heritage France, Southwest France, Cahors
Served Blind.
Smells sourly juicy, red and black plums, slight earthy, spicy. Medium plus intensity acidity, similar fruit profile, huge, chalky tannins, very young.
I guessed Rhone Syrah, possibly Cornas, 2018...oops part two

Red
2016 Sons & Brothers Vineyard Cabernet of Millthorpe Australia, New South Wales, Central Ranges, Orange
Served Blind.
Menthol, mint, eucalyptus, positively pine! Red currant over blackcurrant. Medium plus intensity acidity, juicy, fleshy, medium plus intensity tight drying, grainy, chalky tannins. Fruit plays second fiddle, quite 'wet'.
I guessed NSW (Orange or Hunter Valley) Cabernet 2016
Red
2010 Heathcote Estate Shiraz Block A Australia, Victoria, Central Victoria, Heathcote
Served Blind.
Pretty, sweet red berry fruit backed by a little sweet spice, a little peppery note, smidge of volatility. Juicy, volatile on the palate as well, chalky tannins arrive and dominate proceedings...
I guessed Shiraz Grenache or Grenache Shiraz blend 2012
Red
2010 Rockford Shiraz Basket Press Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
Served Blind.
Controlled, concentrated red berries especially strawberry, a little cream, vanilla/caramel - plenty of oak, ripe nose. Juicy, ripe alcohol is present, red berries, polished oak here as well, chalky, woody drying tannins - positively chewy and these close down the palate.
I guessed Grenache or GSM blend, South Australia, 2012

Red
2019 Grattamacco Bolgheri Rosso Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri
Served Blind.
Blackberry, plums, peppery, sweet spice, a little mint, savoury spice here as well. Juicy, loads of (Pronounced intensity) chalky tight, gravelly tannic grip, sweet black fruits; Ribena under this. Meh.
The fruit made me think of Barossa Cabernet, the tannins made me think of Italy. I guessed it was the former.

Red
2009 Château Montus Madiran France, Southwest France, Madiran
Served Blind.
Medium minus intensity aromas are slightly reductive rubbery, blackcurrant, sweet spice, alcohol warmth, quite closed on the nose. In the mouth medium plus intensity acidity, massive drying, tannins are chalky textured, black hued fruits, alcohol warmth.
I knew this was mine.
Red
2015 Torbreck Mataro The Pict Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
Served Blind.
Oof, smells like Port! A little rancio, figs, plums, alcohol warmth, sweet spice, walnut, liquorice. Juicy, medium plus intensity acidity, chalky raspy tannins, it's a little sour, oddly enough, on the palate.
Couldn't get a grip on this at all. Defo Barossa - reminded me of the Chris Ringland...from a grape perspective more of a case of what it wasn't - not shiraz, cabernet or grenache but I didn't get to mataro

Closing

Well, that was a bit embarrassing...I usually get about 60% of varietal/regions but this time was pretty awful...started reasonably well and then descended rapidly...time to practice some more tasting...Damn you Covid!
