Big Shiraz tasting from United Cellars...

Flight 1 (29 notes)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Jacquinot et Fils Champagne Brut Private Cuvee France, Champagne
Citrus, lemon, biscuit, slightly waxy...Medium plus intensity acidity, quite citrus, a little grainy texture, biscuit, mousse is aggressive, not for me.
2019 Les Vignobles Foncalieu Syrah Vin de Pays d'Oc Le Versant France, Languedoc Roussillon, Vin de Pays d'Oc
Pretty jubey blackberry with slight plums, black cherry, very slight green peppercorns, slightly rustic nose. Juicy, savoury, fruit tea tannins persist, less overtly fruit forward on the palate, a little short...nose is better than the taste...
2017 Domaine les Alexandrins St. Joseph France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, St. Joseph
Savoury, bacon fat, black hued fruit, a little peppery note, opens with time to show a touch of black olive, a little saline note. Medium plus intensity acidity, juicy with chalky tannins, savoury, medium minus intensity flavours of slight sour black fruits and black olives...Meh.
2016 Domaine Michelas-St. Jemms Crozes-Hermitage Terres d'Arce France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Crozes-Hermitage
Concentrated and slightly overripe, brambles and blackberry, touches of oaky sweet spice; quite polished oak note, alcohol warmth. Juicy, fleshy, tight textured tannins support the fruit which is less obviously over-ripe on the palate. Hmm.
2017 M. Chapoutier Ermitage Les Greffieux France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
Jubey, pretty but concentrated blackberry fruit, touches of peppery spice with polished oak, a little sweaty horse. Medium plus intensity acidity, big chalky tannins, quite savoury on the palate, fruit a little muted beneath this. Time should help.
2018 Shadowfax Shiraz Australia, South Australia
Funky, earthy, slightly reductive, rubber, touch of wild ferment, all over ripe, sweet spice slight bacon fat and gets a little jubey with time. Juicy, medium plus intensity acidity, blackberry, peppery, chalky tannins, very slight sharp. Hmm
2018 Frankland Estate Shiraz Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Frankland River
Jubey blackberry with touches of Ribena, savoury, smidge of black pepper. Medium plus intensity acidity, tightly tannic, alcohol warmth intrudes on the finish. Meh.
2018 Yeringberg Shiraz Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley
Medium minus intensity aromas of black hued fruit, berry, slightly meaty, peppery spice, caramel, polished oak. medium plus intensity acidity, tight, drying tannins close down the palate but there is blackberry and plum fruit in support here. Hmm
2018 S.C. Pannell Shiraz Koomilya GT Block Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale
Jammy, reductive, raspberry, loads of alcohol, jubey with time. The alcohol lends a spicy peppery note. Juicy, smooth tannins, black hued fruits, long. Balanced. Alcohol present but controlled on the palate.
2019 Yabby Lake Vineyard Syrah Single Vineyard Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Mornington Peninsula
Reductive rubberyness, black pepper, a little liquorice over muted blackberry, quite savoury, a little spice. Medium plus intensity acidity, talc textured tannins, fruit plays seconds fiddle here, slight alcohol warmth intrudes. Nah.
2019 Shaw and Smith Shiraz Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Adelaide Hills
Slight fruit lozenge, blackberry, jubey, pretty with polished oak, sweet spice, a little mint as well. The palate is a reflection of the nose, the alcohol lends a little peppery spice, rather nice.

2018 Te Mata Estate Syrah Bullnose New Zealand, North Island, Hawke's Bay
Savoury blackberry, ripe, touch of plums, sweet oak spice, slightly dusty notes, with time...Medium plus intensity acidity, blackberry cordial but the acid is little sharp. Meh.
2019 Craggy Range Syrah Le Sol Gimblett Gravels Vineyard New Zealand, North Island, Hawke's Bay, Gimblett Gravels
Savoury, closed, meaty, alcohol warmth, very slightly resinous, rocky minerality, gets prettier with time shows a little jubeyness. Medium plus intensity acidity, tight tannins are drying, alcohol warmth intrudes on the finish. time may help but this is quite disjointed at the moment.
2018 Atlas Wines Shiraz 429 Degrees Clare Valley Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley
Reductive, closed...with agitation it still shows that rubbery note. A little strawberry, sweet spice struggles beneath this. With time it starts to open to show more jammy fruit with slight alcohol warmth. I wouldn't pick this as Shiraz based on the nose. Quite strawberry jam on the palate, alcohol warmth, softly textured tannins...Okay but, umm, not really shiraz for me...
2016 Yarra Yering Dry Red N°2 Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley
Medium minus intensity aromas of black hued fruit ,blackberry, sweet spice, slightly sour notes; like red berry and redcurrant, a smidge of jubeyness and a touch of plums. Juicy, fleshy, slightly sour fruit, alcohol warmth, medium minus intensity chalky tannins persist beneath the sour fruit. Meh.
2010 Jasper Hill Shiraz Georgia's Paddock Australia, Victoria, Central Victoria, Heathcote
Gamey, savoury, leather, slightly sour notes, black over red berry fruits, earth, a smidge of mint, a little polished oak. Juicy, red over blackberry, plenty of peppery spice, alcohol warmth, tightly tannic grip is drying. Meh.
2005 Giaconda Shiraz Warner Vineyard Australia, Victoria, North East, Beechworth
Black tea, earth, leather, cedar, cigar box, a little black fruit, olive, mushrooms, smoky, a bit of cellar stink with time. Juicy, fleshy, savoury, earthy, leathery, alcohol warmth and, other than this heat, it's rather nice.
2020 Two Hands Shiraz Angels Share Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale
Concentrated blackberry is quite jammy, a little sweet spice underpin, more jubey with time in the glass, a little black cherry. Juicy, a little acid, slightly sour, softly tannic burr, alcohol warmth but, despite this, it still feels a little dilute.
2019 Head Wines The Blonde Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
Ripe blackberry and plums, savoury style Barossa, baked earth, slightly reductive. Juicy, ripe with plums, a little chocolate, liquorice, alcohol warmth, softly textured tannins persist and support, fruit carries long, nice in a big way. On of the better wines I've had from this producer.
2019 Yangarra Estate Shiraz King's Wood Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale
More red than black fruit; especially compared to the Two Hands and the Head. Shows a little cherry as well as a touch of mint, plain chocolate, a little fruit sweetness, chalky tannins, slightly sour, alcohol warmth. Nah.
2019 Hickinbotham Shiraz Brooks Road Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale
Slightly herbaceous; mint, wild and slightly compote blackberry fruit, controlled oak. Juicy with blackberry and plum, slight mint, wonderful tannin burr persists long. Hmm, okay, there is a little sharp red currant sourness that I find a bit off-putting.
2019 Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier Australia, New South Wales, Southern New South Wales, Canberra District
Apricot, blackberry, a little polished oak and earth. Wetly juicy, very slightly sour blackberry, smidge of peppercorn, tannins are chalky and drying and dominate the fruit which does not persist. Nah.
2014 Tyrrell's Shiraz Vat 9 Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley
Reductive, clay, earth, savoury, leathery, plummy and spice aromas. Juicy, plummy, earthy, talc textured tannins persist long, with a little blackberry lozenge on the finish. Still needs time to come round...

2016 Henschke Shiraz Mount Edelstone Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Eden Valley
Ripe blackberry, cream, peppery spice, polished oak but slightly sour red currant and herbaceous notes, alcohol warmth. Juicy, slightly sour acid, blackberry, alcohol warmth, chalky tannins carry long. Hmm, not a good one for me.
2017 Jim Barry Shiraz The Armagh Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley
Polished oak lends this a touch of fruit cake combined with maraschino cherry, blackberry, blackcurrant, cream, vanilla. Juicy, fleshy, blackcherry, blackberry over plentiful persistent but softly textured tannins, a little fruit cake on the palate as well. Very young but balanced and rather nice.
2019 Langmeil Shiraz Valley Floor Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
Blackberry, plums, sweet spice, concentrated but not overtly jammy fruit shows a little boysenberry, clay. Concentrated, dense, black fruits, earthy, chewy tannins, alcohol warmth.
2019 Gibson Shiraz The Dirtman Australia, South Australia, Barossa
Mint, blackberry, smells slightly wet, a little vanilla, alcohol lends spcie, slightly lift3ed. Juicy, alcoholic, slightly green, Nah.
2019 The Standish Wine Company The Relic Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
Ripe jubey blackberry, pepper, sweet spice, slightly jammy, touches of clay on the nose. It's a bit of a beast on the palate, concentrated, chewy, black fruits, chewy tannins, long, finishes both savoury and with liquorice. Lacks balance for me.
2018 Torbreck RunRig Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
Fruit cake like the Jim Barry but this time joined but plenty of alcohol warmth...sweet blackberry is a little jammy as well. Positively Porty and extracted, raisin water, vanilla...lacks the elegance and balance of the Armagh...

Two things from this tasting...firstly young Shiraz is preposterously reductive when bottled under screwcap; they really should have done a lot more decanting. Secondly the movement from 'classic' old school big beast shiraz to a more elegant Syrah style is still floundering a little...You can't make cool climate wine from hot climate sites...simply harvesting early is not going to help because the grapes don't get ripe enough...
