Flight 1 - Sausage Rolls (2 notes)

Quince paste on top - and some game in the mince.

White - Sparkling
2006 Taittinger Champagne Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut France, Champagne
Lovely! I see my notes from October Wimps say that that was the best of these I've had. Well this now overtakes it. It's all there on the palate from the beginning - open and ready for business. Really lovely start to proceedings.

1998 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut France, Champagne
Deep golden colour. To begin with - muted on the nose, Slight appley taste with an almost soapy mouthfeel, fine bubbles. Really didn't show well when sat beside the 06 Comtes. With food and a little air - started to open up. I left about half my glass and came back to it a few courses later...sheesh. Just super delicious - all the elements that were there before just came into focus, and became harmonious. I didn't pick a WOTL but if I were to...this would have been a contender, in a very strong line up. There's a lesson here - open your Krug before drinking. I would consider decanting if I had any...

Flight 2 - Juniper and Pine Smoked Salmon (1 note)

Lovely earthy root vegetables in a kind of ceviche. Not terribly wine friendly but delicious.

White
2009 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis 1er Cru La Forest France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
Lovely, a fragrant, almost ecclesiastical nose. Lovely mouthfeel - really coats the palate. I struggle to describe Chablis, somehow haven't built up the right vocabulary, but this was a lovely wine, not overly showy, but quietly powerful.

Flight 3 - Christmas Ham (3 notes)

Kind of a ham hock raviolo. Just as good as it sounds.

Red
2005 Alain Voge Cornas Les Vieilles Vignes France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas
Lovely stuff. Super complete, balanced - has the red fruit, blood and iron you want from Cornas, but also integrated and, while not laid back, also not shouting. If this had been decanted earlier we would have got so much more of the enjoyment - as it was, I saved most of my glass to drink after the flight which followed and...just lovely. If i drink this in the next five years at a restaurant I'll double decant at home...
Red
2010 Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier Australia, New South Wales, Southern New South Wales, Canberra District
On the nose - maybe a hint of vanilla? Floral, violet pastilles. On the palate - clearly a more polished wine - I think I'd have spotted it as a new world Syrah. There was discussion at the table as to whether it was really integrated - to my taste it absolutely was but, like Rioja or maybe Ridge, the oak can be somewhat prominent without being unbalanced. There was length on the finish - this was a really good Syrah. I've drunk very little Australian for a long time - will certainly seek this out in future.

2000 Marc Sorrel Hermitage Le Gréal France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
Of this flight, the one that was most giving from the off. A whiff of bret but just enough to make it interesting. Clearly starting its third phase of life - everything in balance, there's still some fruit. Structure is there but not sure how much further it has to go. As it evolved in the glass - we got some camp fire and bacon. Of the flight - the one for drinking now.

Flight 4 - Roast Rudolph (3 notes)

Red
1997 Montevertine Le Pergole Torte Toscana IGT Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
My first experience of this wine. I'm told 100% Sangiovese - made as an IGT as at the time Chianti didn't allow 100%. Really refined - no rough edges. Hard to compare this -a bit of sour cherry perhaps, but the overall impression is just an incredibly well put together red wine, that will go on forever.

Clearly of a type with the 97 it was sat beside, but probably readier to go. In burgundy terms, this might be a 2006 or possibly a 2002, when sat beside the 1999 of the 1997...again, a just really well put together wine, no rough edges, and it's easy to see why it has the following it has.

1997 Arnaldo-Caprai Montefalco Sagrantino 25 Anni Italy, Umbria, Montefalco, Montefalco Sagrantino
100% Sagrantino from Umbria - a grape variety I'd never heard of, from a part of Italy I could not have placed on a map. In spite of costing a fraction of its flightmates, probably my favourite wine of the flight - by this stage my written notes were getting sketchy, all I captured was "awesome" and "So Complete. At the End.".

Flight 5 - Christmas Pudding (1 note)

The best Christmas Pud I've ever had.

White - Sweet/Dessert
1985 Château Rieussec France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
Double decanted at around 10am and served around 3:30. Deep - almost worrying colour. On the nose - still fresh, a hint of tropical fruits. On the palate - rich and long. Did just the job asked of it.

Closing

We were very lucky with the wines - a really well balanced lunch, with every wine on form.
