Flight 1 (7 notes)

White
2015 Weingut Josef Leitz Rüdesheimer Berg Schloßberg Riesling Großes Gewächs Germany, Rheingau
A lovely textbook Riesling. Some petroleum on the nose, the fruit on this had impressive heft and concentration. No hints of excessive warmth and alcohol, and despite the weight it still gave a linear and driven finish.
Red
2018 Two Paddocks Pinot Noir The Fusilier Bannockburn Vineyard New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Central Otago
Much better than the basic bottling of Two Paddocks tasted at the 67PM preview the other week. Clearly new-world Pinot but it wasn't excessively jammy or ripe, pretty well-balanced with lots of strawberry fruit. Lacked the structure a Burgundy, but that also meant that the wine was approachable now.
Red
2001 Domaine Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Decided to check in on another bottle of this after a poor showing last week. A better bottle but still divided opinions, some liked it and thought that it would pair well with food. Didn't hit the heights of the bottle three years ago but this had more fruit present, albeit with a little greenness.
Red
1994 Dominus Estate Napanook Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley
93 points
Everyone was in left-bank Bordeaux for this. Lovely aged Napa that showed restraint and classicism. Black fruit, thought it was from a Bordeaux from a strong vintage, but it had some greenness that emerged with air. I haven't had much experience with old Napas but the couple of times that I had them, I was certain that they were Bordeaux. Very good.

1985 Bodegas Vega-Sicilia Ribera del Duero Único Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero
Took a while to get going, but when it did it was the wine of the night for me, just ahead of the Dominus. Wonderfully fresh still for a supposedly weaker vintage, some leather and cigar box as all the American oak had been wonderfully integrated. A hint of salinity on the finish.
Red
1996 Tertre Rôteboeuf France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Bought this based on some glowing reviews by others but everyone at the table agreed that this was a soulless and uninteresting wine. Mainly unintegrated oak, glossy and dull fruit.
Red
2000 Tua Rita Redigaffi Toscana IGT Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
Think the others liked this a lot more than me. A souped-up wine on steroids as the previous taster mentioned, energetic and powerful. But at the end of the day I didn't manage more than a glass of this, too dark and concentrated with chocolate and port flavours that I didn't enjoy.
