Flight 1 (2 notes)

White
2018 Greywacke Chardonnay New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough
86 points
On the nose some toasty lanolin with gun smoke - very reductive and doesn’t really blow off even with a lot of air time. There is some waxy lemon peel in there
Palate keeps some of the reductive elements but there is some ripe apple and lime zest.
There are some nice elements at play here but the reductive element is too hard to ignore - a bottle shake next time might be in order.

My note at the time was “Someone murdering a wet sheep with a volley of musket fire”

White
2020 Domaine Girard Chardonnay Limoux las salvios France, Languedoc Roussillon, Languedoc, Limoux
87 points
Almost soapy orange and lemon peel on the nose. Some white floral elements.
Palate is crisp and fresh - fairly simple green apple and a short finish. Not a lot of complexity but a serviceable wine

Flight 2 (2 notes)

White
2014 Kumeu River Chardonnay Maté's Vineyard New Zealand, North Island, Auckland, Kumeu
92 points
Nose of green apple flesh and lemon peel. A light hint of sweetness and a tinge of reduction. Quite subtle on the nose

This is lovely on the palate. Ripening apple, lemon juice, grapefruit. Balanced medium plus acidity.

First time trying Kumeu river and seems good to me
White
2019 Cristom Chardonnay Estate USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Eola - Amity Hills
90 points
Nose brings Waxy lemon peel, a little bit of green apple. Not overwhelmed by oak - a tiny bit of coconut

Palate is very fresh - Almost red apple juice, a little pear. Good acidity - very refreshing.

Certainly Oregon vs California.

Flight 3 (3 notes)

White
2018 Au Bon Climat Chardonnay Los Alamos Vineyard USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Barbara County
93 points
Oooh I liked this

Palate of ripe apple and dried coconut. A lovely lemon spritz hanging in the air. Quite exuberant - reminds me of a lemon meringue pie.

Palate delivers what you’d expect from the nose. Rich ripe apple, banana, full silky body but good acidity to cut through. Very balanced.

Passes the test of would I buy this - yes I bought 6 bottles the next morning!

I think this was good but I’d drink up now
Waxy lemon peel on the nose
First thing that hit me on the plate was the pronounced acidity - quite bright apple spritz. Clipped finish.

This was great
Rich nose - papaya and ripe apple with lemon peel
Palate is fresh but rounded - thrilling tension. Long lingering finish.
My top white of the night

This is better than my last bottle showing the longevity of this village wine

Nose brings mint, red currant, some meatiness/ leather, sous bois and a delicious sapidity that lures you in. Just hint of reduction
Palate brings that sapid red plum, morello cherry, mushroom. Very moreish.
Red
2018 Mac Forbes Pinot Noir Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley
86 points
Very light and a little cloudy
Nose of dry cleaners and smoke.
Palate brings crunchy raspberry, strawberry which is quite nice but the finish is very short. this might be nice chiller but I wasn’t a fan on the night

Flight 5 (2 notes)

Red
2011 The Wine Society Pinot Noir The Society's Exhibition Martinborough New Zealand, North Island, Wairarapa, Martinborough
90 points
First time having a TWS exhibition wine

Nose of red plum, dried strawberry, a little toast and spice.
Palate delivers soft strawberry and raspberry, some spice. Quite crunchy and good acidity. Pretty nice and doing well given the age.
Red
2008 Domaine Borgeot Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Boudriotte Rouge France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
92 points
Nose of quite pronounced leather, sous bois, dried cherry, umeboshi (which I love) blackcurrant, tapenade.
Palate has blackcurrant and a little of the ume but a little sharp on the finish. Still very good

Flight 6 (2 notes)

Red
2018 Au Bon Climat Pinot Noir Isabelle USA, California
93 points
Nose of very clear tandoori spice (not something I think I’ve noted before), red currant, some soft sweetness
Palate is deliciously sapid red fruit and lots of that tandoori spice. Great acidity. Love this.
Red
2015 Mark Haisma Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Arvelets France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru
91 points
Nose of toast, soft red plum, some minerality - a little shy on the nose.
Big structured palate - rustic. Big red and blue plum, red pepper. Tannins are definitely there - teeth licking.
Needs time but the stuffing is there

Red

Shy nose - perhaps hint of white pepper.

Red
2009 Henri Boillot Clos Vougeot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
93 points
Nose is very perfumed - old leather and balsamic but some young red cherry,
Palate is quite young too and tannins are still pretty present and fresh red fruit. This has great stuffing and will only get better
Red
2007 Domaine Dujac Morey St. Denis France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis
92 points
Notes were failing at this stage
Nose of dusty but ripe blue plum, evolved florals.
Palate is very fresh, a lightness to it but a long finish. Lovely stuff

Flight 10 (1 note)

My oldest burgundy by far. A real survivor

Nose of old leather, porcini, truffle, a hint of dried cherry and oolong tea
Palate of dried cherry and plum, astringent acidity kicks in but this is a a lovely experience.
