Introduction

Five of us gathered at Estelle to enjoy they're Portuguese, Italian and Spanish-inspired menu (BB, LI, DM, CS, KB). Given the menu, we went with some excellent Spanish whites and Italian reds to pair with our choices. Food turned out very well and the service was outstanding.

Flight 1 (1 note)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Robert Moncuit Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut Les Grands Blancs France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
91 points
Light gold color. Drank a glass over an hour. 3gm dosage. The nose shows fresh cut honeydew melon, green apple, and lime blossom. The palate is more mineral driven and taut with plenty of chalk, melon, and apple peel.

Flight 2 (2 notes)

White
2016 Do Ferreiro Albariño Rías Baixas Adina Spain, Galicia, Rías Baixas
93 points
Pale gold color. Drank a glass plus over 2 hours. The nose starts off with just a hint of fusil and then the explosion of minerality and ocean aromas engulf you with that really earthy shellfish and seashore character followed by a mix of white and green citrus with lime, grapefruit and apple forefront. The palate has blissful minerality with the swampy brininess and oyster laden flavors along with near searing acidity that makes this incredibly crisp and lively. This was great with our blood orange and goat cheese salad. Drank this next to an excellent '15 Do Ferreiro Cepas Vejas that took longer to evolve. 92+ to 93pts.
White
2015 Do Ferreiro Albariño Rías Baixas Cepas Vellas Spain, Galicia, Rías Baixas

Light gold color. Drank a glass plus over 2hours. Drank this next to an even better '16 Do Ferreiro Adina. This was a little warmer and seemed to initially lack the verve of the '16 Adina to start. The nose shows Meyer lemon, oyster notes, and hints of diesel. The palate is broader and deeper than the Adina with saline really standing out, just filling you with a sense of ocean. Very long from the start but not showing the acidity or lift of the Adina. About an hour into to this, there was something of a transformation as everything came together and the acidity revealed itself making it more riveting and compelling. I love these Do Ferreiro Albarino's, and this serves as a reminder that I need to crack them more often.

Flight 3 (1 note)

Rosé
2010 R. López de Heredia Rioja Rosado Gran Reserva Viña Tondonia Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja
flawed
Corked. Trying to remember if I've ever had a corked rose before, don't think so.

Flight 4 (2 notes)

Red
2008 Pertimali (Livio Sassetti) Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
91 points
Very dark red color. PNP, drank a glass over an hour plus. Black cherry and blackberry liqueur on the nose, tar, black pepper and spices. Lots of concentration and power on the palate, full bodied, dark fruits, black cherry, blackberry liqueur, some lacquer character, gravel, dry with firm tannins and plenty of that spice on the back end.

Red
1997 Siro Pacenti Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
94 points
Deep dark garnet color with 6mm bricked transitional edge. PNP, drank a glass plus over an hour plus. This really has an alluring and incredibly complex nose with leather, mushroom, black licorice, dried cherries, black currants, menthol, roasted meats, and a hint of fresh cut wood. The palate is suave with satiny tannins that still have plenty of mileage left; there's an array of darker fruits including plum, black cherry, blackberry and black currants, loam, grainy minerality and crushed rocks, licorice, mushroom, and leather. that all translate into a thought provoking experience. Wish I had a couple more of these to follow. Fantastic. 94+(+?)pts.

White - Sweet/Dessert
2010 Garagiste Sauternes France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
92 points
Medium gold color. Drank a small glass over 30 minutes, from 375ml. Drinking well, showing tangerine, apricot, nectarine, honey, vanilla bean, and really nice acid sweet balance. This has got a lot of energy and freshness with the vintage shining. Others commented on a caraway note on the nose initially that then faded, but I never could get that. One to go.
