Flight 1 (10 notes)

White
2015 Domaine Louis Michel Chablis Grand Cru Grenouilles France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
90 points
Not too rich in texture and weight, despite the vintage, but certainly with the classic hallmarks of Chablis. The fruit does is a little buttery and sweet but there's plenty of steely minerality and acidity behind this. Good weight and complexity, if a little less than what I would want for a grand cru.
White
2017 Pierre Boisson Meursault Les Grands Charrons France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
93 points
Reductive, but in a good way. This is quite opulent and potent, with more of a popcorn thing than outright sulphur. Fairly ripe, with a good thick texture that is pretty true to Meursault. A little bit of salinity but plenty of fruit and minerality in this. I've been back and forth on the Boisson wines, but I think this one I'm pretty bullish on.

2013 La Clarté de Haut-Brion Blanc France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
90 points
I think this was better than my past experiences with this wine, but it still struck me as too sauvignon blanc heavy even though it's apparently 60/40 semillon/sauvignon. Anyway, the palate's quite rich and has good weight, but it's really the grassiness that gets to me. Later on, this filled out some, but the green notes are a little too much here. It'd be interesting to see how this changes with many, many years, but I'm not yet convinced to put any in my cellar right now.
Red
1983 Vieux Château Certan France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
flawed
Corked.
Red
2019 Domaine Didier Fornerol Côte de Nuits Villages France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Côte de Nuits Villages
90 points
We threw this in a decanter this time, and I think the wine benefitted from it. It's certainly not too complex, but there's definitely quite a bit to like here. A bit in the post-modern style with the high-acidity red fruit and spice tones (stems?). Easy drinking now, and even though I don't think this has the depth and power for much aging, it's a pretty delicious bottle of red Burgundy.

Red
2007 Thomas Pinot Noir Dundee Hills USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills
93 points
An excellent bottle of Oregon pinot. This edition doesn't seem to have the same ripeness as some of the more recent vintages -- this is cooler and shows more red fruit. There's some tartness to the fruit on the palate here, but it's gentle and balanced in the context of the wine. I love the acidity and minerality on this -- it's like a cool vintage Burgundy (as much as I don't love making that general comparison).
Red
2010 Domaine Louis Boillot et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin Les Evocelles France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin
90 points
I think I expected a little more elegance on this wine given the vintage. Quite true to the dirt however -- this has a bit of a heavy, rustic edge, especially on the back end with its very rustic tannins. The fruit seems a little more black than red, and the wine a little chunkier than I would expect for a 2010.
Beer
N.V. Marz Community Brewing Co. Triple Crown Lager USA, Illinois
This might be the best beer I've had from Marz. It's easy-drinking and slightly sweet from the rice and jasmine, but low enough in alcohol for easy crushing. Love the floral notes here -- it's just a fantastically delicious can of beer.
White - Off-dry
2005 Dr. Loosen Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
90 points
#21-06, 7.5% abv. From half-bottle. A nice spicy touch on the nose, with some sweet stone fruit, very much along the lines of an Auslese. On the palate, this also has a bit of the same spice, but the sweetness seems to overtake the rest of the wine a little bit, and this overall isn't as complex as what I would hope for from a Goldkapsel wine. But it's very archetypal for an Auslese and I'm certainly not mad about it.

White - Sweet/Dessert
1994 Müller-Catoir Mußbacher Eselshaut Rieslaner Trockenbeerenauslese Germany, Pfalz
95 points
#19-95, 8% abv. From half-bottle. Yeah, this is a Cronenberg wine, all out of proportion in a way that keeps the wine impeccably balanced. Pours like motor oil, but the brown colour isn't too dark here. On the palate, there is the classic, screaming acidity of rieslaner, which you almost need to have because of how sweet this wine is. Caramel, brown sugar, citrus peel, and a whole host of other good things, this is classic Hans-Günter Schwarz magic.
