Introduction

Six of us got together to drink a few nice bottles.

Flight 1 (1 note)

White - Sparkling
2012 Dom Pérignon Champagne France, Champagne
99 points
Intense nose displaying pure concentrated white fruit, lemon curd, candied lemon, crisp apple, brioche, honeysuckle, sweet spices and crushed rocks. Exceptional concentration, layers upon layers of pure concentrated white fruit, very fine generous mousse, rich and sweet but also pure and precise, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, and the finish that last over a minute with honeysuckle at the end. We recently discussed the 08 vs 12 where I was the only one who expressed a preference for the 08. I thought the 08 was more elegant and pure, i.e. Chevalier vs Batard. This particular bottle displays the perfect balance and seems purer than the precious bottle. Clearly more concentrated, but also seems as pure as the 08. Incredibly showing. I highly recommend to catch it now as it is incredibly delicious like drinking a great young white Burgundy.

Flight 2 - Chardonnay (3 notes)

The Combettes was drinking incredibly well.

White
2015 Aubert Chardonnay Lauren Estate Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
97 points
En magnum with the typical slightly cloudy light yellow color. Classic Aubert nose displaying intense deeply toned sweet yellow fruit, yellow peach, pineapple, lemon curd, candied lemon peel, butter popcorn, oyster jus, sweet spices and oyster shell. Exceptional concentration, layer upon layers of concentrated sweet yellow fruit, dense, rich and deeply toned but also showing very good balance, perfect amount of acidity and oyster shell mineral, and a long rich concentrated yellow fruit driven finish with butter popcorn at the end. For me, Aubert is the best Chardonnay made domestically. Aubert makes a big scale concentrated style of Chardonnay with a hint of heat. However, it consistently retains a very good balance and strong mineral expression which strangely reminds me a Corton Charlemagne. If you are a member of AFWE, just move on and if you are a fan of Aubert, you will love this wine.

White
2014 Remoissenet Père et Fils Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
95 points
Very complete nose displaying delicious bright yellow fruit, pineapple, lemon curd, vanilla, a hint of butter scotch/oak, sweet spices and limestone. Beautifully balanced, delicious yellow fruit, silky and oily, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, and a seamless long yellow fruit driven finish with honey and vanilla at the end. Showing neither tension nor precision, but simply delicious. Some may be bothered by the oak expression but it is pretty well integrated, IMO. Don’t look for the minerality of Dauvissat or Cotat, but I am a big fan.
White
2014 Morlet Family Vineyards La Proportion Dorée USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
92 points
Medium expressive nose displaying ripe yellow fruit, baked apple, passion fruit, peach cobbler, crem brulee, vanilla/oak and mineral. Excellent concentration, concentrated tropical yellow fruit, sweet and rich, bright acidity, medium mineral and a medium long sweet yellow fruit driven finish. I suspect this was very impressive upon release. Just like most of Condrieu, it is a strongly nose driven wine that has a serious diminishing returns with time.

Flight 3 - Beausejour (1 note)

This was very promising.

Red
2009 Château Beausejour (Duffau Lagarrosse) France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
97 points
Expressive nose displaying ripe concentrated black fruit, blackberry, blackberry pie, a hint of plum, dark chocolate, dark flowers, a hint of green, dark spices and crushed rocks. Excellent concentration, very finely layered concentrated black fruit, silky and fluid, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, very fine tannins and a seamless long ripe concentrated black fruit driven finish with dark chocolate and mineral at the end. This is starting to reach the early drinking windows. I am hoping that it will drink like the 90 five to ten years ago. Not the most complex but really hedonistic wine.

Flight 4 - Domestic Syrah (2 notes)

Red
2011 Sine Qua Non Syrah Patine Eleven Confessions Vineyard USA, California, Central Coast, Sta. Rita Hills
93 points
Expressive nose displaying extremely ripe black fruit, blackberry liqueur, black cherry, fruitcake, cinnamon and other dark spices, molasses and earth. Excellent concentration, layers upon layers of extremely ripe black fruit, rich, unctuous and deeply toned, bright acidity, earthy mineral, nicely integrated tannins and a long extremely ripe black fruit driven finish with fruitcake and cinnamon at the end. This is very ripe even for SQN.
Red
2010 Next of Kyn No~4 Cumulus Vineyard USA, California, Central Coast
97 points
En magnum, intense nose displaying ripe but pure black fruit, blackberry pie, blackberry concentrated, black cherry, light caramel, baking spices and mineral. Exceptional concentration, layers upon layers of concentrated black fruit, dense yet pure and silky, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, nicely integrated tannins and a seamless long concentrated black fruit driven finish with baking spices at the end. This has settled down beautifully compare to the bottle from 2018. I am not the biggest fan of SQN wines but this actually has a very good balance and purity. Drinking nicely.

Flight 5 - Chimere and Colgin (2 notes)

Red
2010 Chimère Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
92 points
The second time having this wine with the similar impression. This is incredibly big and also shows noticeable heat. Totally over the top but the fruit is a bit straightforward. Every TNs are above 95pts. Just take my TN FWIW.
Red
2012 Colgin Cabernet Sauvignon Tychson Hill Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley
97 points
Expressive youthful nose displaying concentrated red and black fruit, crème de cassis, red currant jam, strawberry, dark milk chocolate, lead pencil, coconut, vanilla/oak and mineral. Excellent concentration, layers upon layers of intense dark fruit, rich and opulent, but also silky and beautifully balanced, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, fully integrated tannins and a long opulent red and black fruit driven finish. This is drinking really well, very Colgin and very Cult.

Flight 6 - SQN Sticky (1 note)

Slutty but darn delicious!

White - Sweet/Dessert
2006 Sine Qua Non Chardonnay Mr. K The Noble Man USA, California, Central Coast, Edna Valley
97 points
This is big as one can imagine. Unbelievably concentrated opulent yellow fruit, peach cobbler, yellow peach, dry mango, honey and sweet spices. Exceptional concentration, layers upon layers of hedonistic yellow fruit, 10W40 thickness but magically showing very good balance due to bright acidity, the finish last forever. This is in your face kinda wine but I really am enjoying it.
