2012 Peter Lauer Neuenbersch Riesling Faß 17 Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

The nose is balanced and rounded, filled with tones of quince, peaches, red apple, pears, spice notes, nectarines, mineral notes, smoke, oils, and limes. The Medium bodied feel is balanced and with refreshing, high acidity. This is well balanced with good length, but it does lack a bit of depth. Its still absolutely delicious and I can certainly see this improving further with another 3+ years of age.

The nose is pristine, refined, and deep with loads of saline, white peaches, pears, green apples, white fruits, crushed rocks, guava, papaya, limes, and acacia flowers. This is a nose that makes you take notice right away as it takes a bit to get everything in. There is so much depth and balance on the nose that carries on through to the gorgeous Medium bodied feel with racy, high acidity. This is clearly young and its still insanely good. I do wonder what its aging trajectory will be because I'm not really sure that having more advanced tones makes this better. Regardless, if you want fresh and pristine fruit in your dry Riesling, this has it here in spades in all of the best ways.

Oh wow. Just wow. This completely shits on the 2016 and I was already in love with the 16. This takes everything the 16 had and dials it up another notch and a half with layered, deep, and pristine tones of saline, white peaches, smoke, oils, green apples, crushed rocks, gun flint, a touch of reduction, papaya, nectarines, jasmine, acacia flowers, lemon zest, and a bit of vanilla. There is a real electricity to the nose while showing off a ton of balance that almost makes you think its a high-wire act when in reality its all grounded. The Medium bodied feel carries through that great depth and balance while showing a friendly yet refine nature along with racy, high acidity. This has a very long life ahead of it and though I do wonder how much better it will get, it's still a great dry Riesling that reaches towards the top of the mountain within the style.

2013 Dönnhoff Felsenberg Riesling Großes Gewächs Germany, Nahe
92 points
The nose is balanced with a rounded and take to the tones of green and red apples, pears, quince, peaches, jasmine, ginger, mint, nectarine, papaya, gun flint, and mineral notes. The tones have smoothed out with some age while showing off very good depth and a sense of class. The Medium bodied feel is beautifully balanced and poised with tart, high acidity. This shows off good depth across the nose and palate with a style that is slightly subdued compared to the younger wines around it. This is certainly ready to drink right now, but I do think that in a few years that this will show more of a mature expression as it moves out of the primary phase.

Having the 13 Felsenberg right before this shows off a great contrast. Where the 13 was clearly heading into a more mature phase, this still has a lot of youthful zeal and punch with white peaches, green apples, pears, white florals, saline, crushed rocks, vanilla, and nectarines. The Medium bodied feel shows off good depth and with a lovely freshness that is extremely enjoyable along with tart, high acidity. This is a lovely and balanced younger GG Riesling. There is excellent depth across the nose and palate while still showing off the youthful nature of the wine. If one wants this to show off more maturity, another 3+ years will be needed but if primary-ness is the preferred way to go, then give this some air and enjoy.

The nose is intensely aromatic and jam packed with deep tones of Banana leaf, peach, guava, meyer lemon, limes, crushed rocks, saline, tidal pool aromas, acacia flowers, white fruits, pears, green apples, and tropical citrus notes. Though I haven't been to the Caribbean, this nose is the wine equivalent of what I imagine island hoping and eating all of the fresh fruits would be like. The Medium/light bodied feel is vibrant and deep with racy, high acidity. The acidity is mouth puckering and electric, showing off the youth of the wine. This is a knockout. It'll certainly need some time to fully come together, but it's also just flat out delicious and killer.

Where the nose on the Kirchspiel was jubilant and intense, this showed off the tropical citrus but in a more enveloping way. There is excellent depth and definition to the tones of papaya, saline, peach, apples, nectarine, crushed rocks, minerals, white florals, oils, pears, green apples, jasmine, flint, mint, and some ginger notes. There is a slight austerity to the nose that is really doing it for me. The Medium bodied feel shows off some of that austerity while also showing off an immense amount of depth and balance with electric, high acidity. This isn't just my jam, this is a 20-lane highway. It is painfully young and will need plenty of more age before it fully coaxes itself out, but this is a real stunner already that has plenty of runway to grow and gain.
