Union Station - Chicago IL
Tasted June 28, 2022 by Burgundy Al with 583 views
Introduction
I woke up this morning in Beaune, drove to CDG, flew to Chicago, and took the train directly from ORD to this tasting. I was late, tired and moving slowly, so probably tasted fewer than 25% of available wines.
Flight 1 (36 notes)
Red
2019 Château Carbonnieux
88 points
Walk around tasting. Not my favorite, this is clearly ultra ripe while also showing pronounced tannins. Good weight helps carry this through.

2019 Domaine de Chevalier
92 points
Walk around tasting. Also very ripe with plum, black currant and cassis, yet an elegant structure keeps this nearly balanced already in its infancy. Lots of upside here

Red
2019 Château Pape Clément
93 points
Walk around tasting. Spiced start with broad array of black fruit and an overall good sense of balance despite its ripeness. Good harmony and a nearly finessed finish already. Easily my favorite of the few wines I had time to taste from Pessac-Léognan.
Red
2019 Château Smith Haut Lafitte
Walk around tasting. Rich and black with plum and cassis with stern structure throughout, with little finesse or pleasure coming through today in comparison with most of the other 2019s tasted today. Patience required, 2034 or much later, but still certainly 91+ point potential.
Red
2019 Château Berliquet
90 points
Walk around tasting. Ripe while fun and balanced with lots of fleshy black fruit with lighter tannins for enjoyment in its youth, as soon as the next few years.
Red
2019 Château Canon
94 points
Walk around tasting. Dense, powerful and certainly firmly structured, teasing us with everything held in reserve. One of the few wines tasted today that seemed like classic, old school Bordeaux from the era when these wines were designed to age gracefully. Great potential, 2034 forward.

2019 Château Canon-la-Gaffelière
92 points
Walk around tasting. Ripe and fun, showing cassis, black plum and dark chocolate. Certainly fun in its youth, but there is plenty of density with enough background structure for long-term aging.

2019 Château La Gaffelière
92 points
Walk around tasting. Also ripe and fun, this is showing lots of bold fruit and balance already now. Good concentration and length, this is charming for medium-term enjoyment, while also very cellarworthy. 91-92 point potential.
Red
2019 Château Troplong Mondot
Walk around tasting. Also very ripe and powerful, and also very good balance already. Nothing shy here, but also very well integrated. Very good 92-93+ point potential.
Red
2019 Château Valandraud
95 points
Walk around tasting. One of my favorites. Rich, forward and massive with so much concentration, but yet also easily balanced. One of the most densely packed of today's wines, with very impressive depth and length, 94-95 point potential.

2019 Château Cantenac Brown
92 points
Walk around tasting. Black cherry and currant with spice notes and harmonious tannins, this comes across as elegant and balance with obvious weight and impressive length. 92-93 point potential.
Red
2019 Château Giscours
92 points
Walk around tasting. Spiced with good balance and a touch of cigarbox behind the bold black fruits. Elegant for the vintage with very good length and nearly a sense of harmony already this young. 92-93 point potential.

Red
2019 Château Kirwan
90 points
Walk around tasting. A bit of a tannic beast compared to most, but that is some of the older school Bordeaux style, Very dense and powerful fruit, this will require patience, but I expect 89-91 point potential.
Red
2019 Château Lascombes
90 points
Walk around tasting. Ripe black plum and currant with cassis and sweet spice. Ripe and powerful with soft tannins for the vintage, this will be a good choice for early enjoyment.
Red
2019 Château Malescot St. Exupéry
92 points
Walk around tasting. Ripe black cherry and berries with cedar and anise. All big and powerful, yet quite nicely balanced. 92-93 point potential.

2019 Château Prieuré-Lichine
92 points
Walk around tasting. Black plum and blackberry jam with anise and other spice. Not a powerhouse, but nearly accessible now with soft, silky textures, even more finessed on finish. Likely a very good value, 91-92 point potential.

2019 Château Rauzan-Ségla

Walk around tasting. Ripe black plum and cherry comes across as fleshy and rich, already fun right now, het managing to show finesse on its long-ish finish. Very good weight.

Red
2019 Château Siran
Walk around tasting. Even in the context of all these rich wines, the Siran is too oaky and ultra concentrated making it seem even riper than most. Not my preferred style of wine.

2019 Château du Tertre
90 points
Walk around tasting. Rich start softens towards its long-ish finish as its also slightly firms up. Still good to enjoy on the younger side with its medium+ density.
Red
2019 Château Beychevelle
Walk around tasting. Ripe black fruits with a slightly jammy richness, also meaty. Lots here, even if not quite perfectly balanced for now, so tough to fully/ fairly assess, 91-94 point potential.
Red
2019 Château Branaire-Ducru
93 points
Walk around tasting. Lots of concentrated black fruits and meatiness, well spiced with very good density. Backward for now, better 2031 or much later, this has a old fashioned firmness that I think will serve this wine well over the many decades to come. 92-93 point potential.

Red
2019 Château Gruaud Larose
92 points
Walk around tasting. Brooding and meaty with lots of powerful, backward fruit, begrudgingly giving some richness in the middle, then ending with a long, firm finish. Very good, 92-94 points, 2034 forward.
Red
2019 Château Lagrange (St. Julien)
90 points
Walk around tasting. I found this interesting but awkward today. Lots of intense black fruit, but more tannins and structure. Lots of depth here, but I find this very reticent. Cellar until at least 2030, probably better from 2040, 90-92 points.
Red
2019 Château Langoa Barton
92 points
Walk around tasting. Very bog and bold black plum, currant and cassis. Dense and meaty, still backward but approaching harmony. An old school style I liked. 92-93 points, from 2030 forward.

2019 Château Léoville Barton
94 points
Walk around tasting. Dense and meaty with the intense concentration of the vintage front-and-center, but with firming structure in the near background., making this slightly backward, but nearly approachable. Goes on + on. Very good 94+ point potential.

2019 Château Lafon-Rochet
90 points
Walk around tasting. Good combination of ripe and tart black fruit with good weight. Just less complex notes in the forefront or background vs most other wines today. Others liked this more.
Red
2019 Château Ormes de Pez
89 points
Walk around tasting. Lighter weight and forward style even if slightly firm in the middle at this moment. Good black fruit will easy carry this through, best 2025-2040. Good value.
Red
2019 Château de Pez
90 points
Walk around tasting. Ripe black fruit, also well spiced, all forward and balanced and almost accessible already. Fun now, better 2025 forward, 90-91 points.

2019 Château Grand-Puy Ducasse
92 points
Walk around tasting. Ripeness dominates the start with good enough weight, good balance already on the more restrained middle and finish. Will drink well on the younger side, from 2025.
Red
2019 Château Lynch-Bages
95 points
Walk around tasting. Powerhouse vintage with great density and intensity. Like almost all Lynch Bages, patience is required, this is faintly hinting at balance and its ultimate greatness, probably from 2034 forward, 94-95 point potential, one of my highlights of the day.

2019 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron
94 points
Walk around tasting. Concentrated black fruit with enticing spice, this is so well balanced and nearly accessible now. Not quite as exciting/ vibrant/ interesting as Comtesse de Lalande, but close.

Red
2019 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande
95 points
Walk around tasting. Ripe and densely packed with so much black plum, cassis, anise, mint and espresso, this shows so much concentration from beginning to end. Probably my favorite of the day.

Red
2019 Château Clerc Milon
93 points
Walk around tasting. Very rich with moderate power, this is a wine of excellent finesse in this vintage that doesn't emphasize finesse. Very good young, but with the bones to cellar as well.
Red
2019 Château Duhart-Milon
91 points
Walk around tasting. Firm and meaty, less accessible than most this year. Lots of dense fruit, but slightly more assertive tannins. Long finish is even more structured. 91-93 points, 2034 forward.
Red
2019 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste
93 points
Walk around tasting. On the elegant side of the 2019s tasted today, this seems so charming and accessible, but there is sneaky power and length that is foreshadowing its great potential. Well spiced and nicely bright. 93-94 point potential.
