Introduction

Been a while since one of these so it was interesting to see what was happening in Coonawarra...

Flight 1 (63 notes)

Red
2018 Balnaves of Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
slightly jammy black currant, cedar, touch of Ribena, mint, herbaceous underpin and sweet spice. Juicy, tight, black fruit is concentrated but less jammy, plenty of tight chalky tannins. Time.
Red
2017 Balnaves of Coonawarra Cabernet Merlot Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
Plums over blackcurrant, earth, slight mint. Juicy, tangy, slight red currant joins the black hued fruits, Talc textured tannins. Nice.
Red
2018 Balnaves of Coonawarra The Blend Coonawarra Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
Smells slightly cabernet dominant, blackcurrant, plums, sweet spices, cedar. Juicy, tangy, savoury, plums over blackcurrant, softly textured tannins, slight alcohol warmth intrudes moderately on the finish. Okay.
Red
2020 Bowen Estate Shiraz Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
Slightly minty, savoury, blackberry over plums, slight sweet spice and a smidge of black pepper. Juicy acidity proves slightly sharp, slightly anonymous black fruits, coarse tannins, alcohol warmth, meh.
Red
2020 Bowen Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
Blackcurrant and eucalyptus, earth over sweet spice and cedar. Palate is a concentrated version of the nose, tight but balanced tannins, time required but balanced, lovely.

Red
2017 Brand's Laira Cabernet Sauvignon Blockers Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
Mint and eucalyptus over black and blue currant, cream, savoury, tight, fruit slightly muted, tannins dry and it's a bit tough.
Red
2020 Brand's Laira Cabernet Sauvignon 1968 Vines Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
Black over red currant, slightly jammy underpin, cedar, sweet spice. Juicy, black and red currant less jammy on the palate, slightly coarse and chalky tannins are drying, tight, slight alcohol warmth on the finish.
Time will help
Red
2016 Brand's Laira Cabernet Sauvignon 171 / The Patron Brand's Laira Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
Concentrated blackcurrant, sweet spice, earth, slight mint...Hmm. Palate show some wild black currant and chalky tannins...It's slightly anonymous.
Red
2019 Balnaves of Coonawarra Shiraz Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
Medium minus intensity aromas of black plums. Medium plus intensity acidity, tight chalky tannins, muted fruit on the palate. I expected a lot more but this is quite meh...
Red
2018 Balnaves of Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon The Tally Reserve Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
Cream, polished oak, sweet spice, concentrated blackcurrant, slight eucalyptus. Juicy, quite Ribena, concentrated black fruit, cream, oak, sweet spice, floury textured tannins. All persists long with non-intrusive alcohol warmth. Hmm.
Red
2019 Katnook Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
Medium minus intensity aromas of Ribena, cedar, red currant and berry underpin. Juicy, tangy, tight tannins prove grippy and dry. Hmm.
Red
2012 Katnook Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
Fruit smells slightly dried out, baking spice, slight fresh blackcurrant underpin. Juicy with medium plus intensity acidity, tight chalky tannins fruit plays second fiddle. Medium length. Hmm
Red
2019 Katnook Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Odyssey Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
concentrated, slightly baked black currant, sweet spice, cedar, plenty of alcohol, concentrated black fruit on the palate as well, soft tannins are floury textured. Long but this is a bit too overdone for me.
Red
2021 Leconfield Cabernet Franc Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
Very slight pencil shavings, blackcurrant, very slight sweet spice, earth, cedar. Very concentrated fruit on the palate, slightly hard and chalky green tannins. Palate disappointing after the nose. Meh.
Red
2019 Leconfield Cabernets Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
Savoury blackcurrant, very slight plums, pencil shavings, cedar, pyrazine, slight sweet spice. Juicy, medium plus intensity acidity, Floury tannins are drying fruit persists, non-intrusive alcohol warmth, cedar, smidge of cream. Very good.
Red
2019 Leconfield Cabernet Sauvignon Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
Coffee, Ribena, Baked earth and baking spice with a slightly savoury underpin. Concentrated black fruit, tight chalky tannins, showing as very young but, hmm, not quite right for me.
Red
2017 Leconfield Cabernet Sauvignon The Sydney Reserve Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
concentrated, jammy, slightly anonymous black hued fruit, cedar, pyrazine...In the mouth the tight oaky tannins are very much to the fore with some surprisingly slight sour fruit, mid palate scoop, a slightly belchy quality and plenty of alcohol warmth on the finish. Meh.
Red
2019 Majella Cabernet Sauvignon Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
Very slightly sour smelling blackcurrant, smidge of eucalyptus, cedar and sweet spices in support on the nose. Juicy, fleshy, that sour note to the fruit is on the palate as well but doesn't detract, very slightly chalky tannins support the fruit. Simple, young, nice.
Red
2016 Majella The Malleea Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
Medium minus intensity aromas of concentrated black hued fruits (especially currants), cedar, slight herbaceous underpin, smidge of sweet spices. Palate proves slightly sour with a mid scoop, drying tannins are softly textured, Non-intrusive alcohol warmth on the finish. Hmm.
Red
2015 Majella Cabernet Sauvignon GPL68 Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
Eucalyptus, blackcurrant, cedar, a sense of concentration to the fruit without being overbearing on the nose. And so it proves on the palate, fresh blackcurrant is very fruit pure with a little concentration, tannins drying, slightly cedary but very much in support, Non-intrusive alcohol warmth, all travel very long. Excellent on this tasting.

2020 Parker Coonawarra Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
Slightly dilute, blackcurrant, slight eucalyptus and cream in support. Wet, fruit sweet (touch of residual sugar?), red over black fruit, alcohol warmth, textured tannins. Nah.
Red
2019 Parker Coonawarra Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 95 Block Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
Medium minus intensity aromas of blackcurrant, very slight eucalyptus, slightly perfumed, cedar, sweet spice. Juicy, initially a little thin, tight, chalky tannins, slight alcohol warmth, black fruit but a little anonymous for me.
Red
2018 Parker Coonawarra Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Terra Rossa Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
Blackcurrant, herbaceous notes, sweet spice and cedar, slight plum. Juicy, fleshy, black fruit, persistent tannins are talc textured, spice on the finish. Nice to very nice but I'm a bit hmm for some reason.
Red
2019 Redman Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
A strange taint note initially which dissipates with agitation to show perfumed notes, black fruit, sweet spice, very slight herbaceous underpin. Juicy, merlot more obvious on the palate lending plums and a bit of mid palate breadth, slight blackcurrant, soft tannins are drying. Okay.
Red
2019 Redman Cabernet Sauvignon Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
Tomato and tomato leaf over blackcurrant, slight cedar on the nose. Palate is pretty awful - sour with chalky drying tannins. Nah.
Red
2019 Wynns Coonawarra Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Black Label Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
Blackcurrant, slight eucalyptus, a tiny sweaty note, cedar. Juicy, chewy, savoury, dense tannins seem to dominate. Not as good as when I last tasted this - quite closed and lacking generosity.

2016 Wynns Coonawarra Estate Single Vineyard O'Deas Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
Red and black fruits, slightly herbaceous, savoury, cedar, sweet spice. In the mouth it's juicy, savoury, fleshy, red and black fruit, mid palate breadth, drying, persistent, talc textured tannins creep up. Non-intrusive alcohol warmth helps carry the finish. Good.

2016 Wynns Coonawarra Estate Shiraz Michael Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
Blackberry fruit, sweet spice...Juicy, savoury, black fruits...not a good showing for me...I'm not sure what's going on here...Not flawed just not, well, very good.
Red
2019 Yalumba Cabernet Sauvignon Sanctum Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
Dusty, earthy, muted blackcurrant, sweet spice with a touch of fruit lozenges. Juicy, savoury, slight tobacco leaf, tight textured tannins persist long, black fruits in support. Okay
Red
2018 Yalumba Cabernet Sauvignon The Cigar Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
Blackcurrant, cedar, a little cream, smidge of plum, clay, sweet spice in support. On the palate it's dense with tight drying chalky chewy tannins with black fruits underneath this. Time.
Red
2016 Yalumba Cabernet Sauvignon The Menzies Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
On the nose concentrated black currant fruit, cedar, smidge of eucalyptus, sweet spice. In the mouth it's juicy, slightly baked black fruit, dense tannins are tight but quite floury textured, there is a bit of alcohol warmth on the finish as well. Showing quite primary but balanced in a large way. Hmm.

2017 Yalumba Cabernet Sauvignon The Menzies Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
Savoury, black hued fruit, cedar, eucalyptus, Juicy, savoury, black fruits, tangy, long, nice, balanced.
Red
2014 The Blok Estate Shiraz Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
Slightly jammy and meaty, black plums, very slight reductive rubberiness as well, red fruit underpin. Juicy, slightly sharp acidity, tangy, red over black fruits, tight tannins but this is quite flat. Meh.
Red
2019 The Blok Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Pilot Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
Super pretty, jubey, primary nose, very slight volatility...Very interesting nose...Fruit lozenge on the palate with fruit tea, biscuits, tannins are chalky and separate from the fruit. Oddly compelling but also weird.
Red
2013 The Blok Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
Slightly gamey, a little reductive and reticent, slight mint, red over black fruit. Tangy, dense, flavours are as per the nose, like the shiraz, though, this is a little flat on the palate. Perhaps a problem at bottling?
Red
2021 Brand & Sons Cabernet Franc Last Sunday Drive Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
Cream, butter, earth, muted black fruit. Juicy, fleshy initially, tight chewy tannins, sour black fruits, tangy...soooooooo young...again I struggle to see what I consider Cab Franc typicity. But then those experiences are based on mostly Loire wines which probably explains it completely. I should get down to Coonawarra around harvest and see if I can try some fresh fruit...
Red
2019 Brand & Sons Cabernet Sauvignon Baker’s Run Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
Medium minus intensity aromas of slightly jammy black fruit, clay, eucalyptus, cedar. Juicy, tangy, savoury, concentrated black fruit, fresh, plenty of chalky tannins in support. Hmm.
Red
2018 Jim Brand Wines Cabernet Sauvignon Silent Partner Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
Concentrated black fruit, cedar, mint, sweet spice. On the palate it's dense, concentrated black fruit, alcohol warmth, a real mouthful, bit of a bully, grippy, drying tannins. Not for me.
Red
2018 Brand & Sons Cabernet Sauvignon Sanctuary Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
Concentrated, black cordial - Ribena - but with a savoury underpin, sweet spice, cedar, dense. A bit overdone and overworked. Under screwcap this will need years. Not for me.
Red
2017 Bundalong Cabernet Sauvignon Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
Slightly reductive, red fruit, bit farty, very slight blackcurrant, pyrazine...Sourly juicy, a touch farty on the palate as well, chalky tannins. Meh.
Red
2021 DiGiorgio Family Cabernet Franc Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
Red fruit cordial, slightly unripe tomato leaf, earthy. Quite jubey on the palate, slightly sour, mid palate scoop, talc textured tannins. Hmm.
Red
2019 DiGiorgio Family Cabernet Sauvignon Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
Slightly dusty and gamey aromas, meaty, savoury, clay and black fruits...Juicy, fleshy, black fruit, slightly chalky tannins, simple, young. Okay.
Red
2012 DiGiorgio Family Cabernet Sauvignon Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
Jammy, sweet spice, non-delineated black fruits prove a little anonymous on the nose. Tight, drying tannins, slightly sour black fruit, not showing any age. A bit overdone for me.
Red
2018 Jack Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
Quite generic old school Coonawarra cabernet, slightly baked blackcurrant, eucalyptus in support. Palate is a reflection of the nose, medium plus intensity acidity lends sourness to the concentrated black fruits, chalky, drying tannins. <shrugs>
Red
2014 Jack Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Mythology Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
Concentrated version of the standard Jack Estate Cabernet with a bit more oak and cedar on the nose. This carries to the palate which also proves quite unevolved after 8 years...Perhaps a long decant would help...
Red
2019 Koonara Cabernet Sauvignon Ambriel's gift Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
Just opened. Cream, muted black fruit, sweet spice, slightly jubey underpin with dusty cedar. Juicy, savoury, talc textured tannins, slightly farty black fruit, non-intrusive alcohol warmth and savoury on the finish.
Red
2019 Lindeman's Cabernet Sauvignon St. George Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
Sweet spice, black fruits, savoury, blackcurrant over mint on the nose. Juicy, tangy, slight alcohol warmth, blackcurrant, chalky textured tannic grip, slightly too concentrated for me at this tasting.
Red
2019 Lindeman's Pyrus Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
Blackcurrant and plum, slight red currant, mint. Juicy, savoury, concentrated fruit, slightly chalky tannins in support, sense of freshness despite the fruit concentration, long. Nice.
Red
2019 Lindeman's Trio Shiraz - Cabernet Limestone Ridge Vineyard Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
Earthy, muddy, blackcurrant, cream, plums, cedar. Juicy, savoury, plentiful chalky tannins are slightly woody, muted black fruits - more plums over currants here - Medium plus length. Hmm.
Red
2018 Patrick Cabernet Sauvignon Two Blocks Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
Dusty black fruits, sweet spice, cedar, eucalyptus and mint, savoury underpin. Dense, juicy, quite concentrated fruit, tannins are talc textured and well managed. Okay.

2016 Patrick Cabernet Sauvignon Home Block Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
Vanilla, cream, blackcurrant, cedar, sweet spice, toasty. In the mouth it's all vanilla and black fruit, woody chalky tannins, old school Aussie Cabernet. Woof.
Red
2012 Patrick Cabernet Sauvignon Grande Réserve Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
flawed
Medium minus intensity meaty, savoury, muted black fruits but this is quite rough and pretty awful on the palate. Perhaps a dud bottle? Will mark as flaw just in case.
Red
2019 Raidis Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Billy Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
Jubey, pretty and fruit forward showing blackcurrant backed by sweet spice, slight mint and meaty notes. Tangy, juicy, tight chalky tannins, black hued fruit, pretty. Okay.

2014 Reschke Cabernet Sauvignon Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
Blackcurrant, slight mint, savoury, slight dried herbs, cedar, earth. Tight drying tannins are quite talc textured, blackcurrant, cedar, slight mint but this is balanced. Okay, a decant will also help.
Red
2020 Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
Herbaceous, blackcurrant, a little earth but clean. Sourly fleshy and juicy red over blackcurrant, bit of a mid-palate scoop, chalky tannins, simple, honest, okay.
Red
2019 Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon The Pastoralist Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
Meaty, savoury, muted black fruits...juicy, black over red fruit is slightly sour on the palate but still feels quite concentrated, huge tannins dry everything out. Nah.

Red
2019 Riddoch The Representative Coonawarra Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
Red over black fruit, cedar, plum, sweet spice. In the mouth it's tangy with floury textured tight tannins over the fruit. It's a bit out of whack. Hmm.
Red
2017 Whistle Post Cabernet Franc Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
Cream, blackcurrant, slightly herbaceous notes and a very slightly meaty underpin. Surprisingly thick on the palate - you could cut it with a knife - lacks elegance. A little bit overdone. Nah.
Red - Sparkling
2021 Balnaves of Coonawarra Sparkling Cabernet Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
slight wood glue, muted, non-specific black fruit, served very cold indeed which rather closes the nose. Aggressive mousse, jubey black currant, smidge of residual sugar, plenty of chalky tannins. Woof.
Rosé - Sparkling
N.V. Leconfield Syn Sparkling Rosé Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
Cherry, cream, slight biscuit, again this is served very cold...Super frothy mousse, tannic burr, meaty cherry lozenge, medium length, Okay.
White - Sparkling
N.V. DiGiorgio Family Sparkling Pinot Noir Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
Meaty, broad, yeast, slightly coarse smelling. Slightly sour on the palate...<shrugs>
Red - Sparkling
2020 DiGiorgio Family Sparkling Merlot Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
Meaty, savoury, plummy, served very cold. Thickly dense on the palate, bone dry, plummy fruit, aggressive mousse, tannins are talc textured, quite unpleasant. Nah.

Closing

And the answer is...a general move away from over-extraction and too much new oak. A few nice wines here. Interesting tasting.
