Flight 1 (9 notes)

White - Sparkling
1996 Duval-Leroy Champagne Femme de Champagne France, Champagne

Late disgorgement I believe, so this was incredibly fresh with few tertiary notes. Driven and pure citrus fruit, very high acidity. Not familiar with this maker but extremely pleasurable in a house-style sense.

Always one of my favourite big house champagnes. Quite similar to the Duval-Leroy in terms of bright and vibrant citrus fruits, except this was a step up with more energy and a lush, creamy texture.

2018 base, 2021 disgorgement. Others liked this more than I did, it had a lot of exotic and tropical yellow fruit, but didn't quite have the drive and acidity that I like in champagnes. With the mix of forgotten grapes it was definitely interesting to try, but think I might prefer the Maladries which sounds more classically built.

2014 David Leclapart Champagne Premier Cru L'Apôtre Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru

Natty nose, very lean and austere despite the ripe yellow fruit. Didn't quite come together for me.
White
2016 Y de Yquem France, Bordeaux

Quite green and lean, 75% SB and 25% Semillon and I think the SB stuck out. Didn't enjoy this with the astringent and green notes that stuck out against the waxy texture.
White
2005 Pavillon Blanc du Château Margaux France, Bordeaux

So much oak that I thought this was new-world, less green than the Ygrec but the yellow fruits were so exotic that I didn't enjoy this. More acid than the Ygrec but had a grapefruit note was quite distracting.
White
2004 Trimbach Riesling Clos Ste. Hune France, Alsace

Dark golden colour, an absolutely monumental wine. Can see why this would be divisive but I loved the incredible concentration on this. Typical Riesling nose but with added intrigue and gravitas, no excess even though it was a big wine.
White
2013 Jean-François Ganevat Les Grands Teppes Vieilles Vignes France, Jura, Côtes du Jura

My contribution. An acid bomb, so much lemon fruit that if Mama Lemon dishwashing liquid was a wine, this would be it. Incredible power but still so light in terms of body. My first proper Ganevat and I am not sure what to think of it.
White - Off-dry
2002 Weingut Keller Dalsheimer Hubacker Riesling Auslese Germany, Rheinhessen

Brought this as an extra bottle to finish things off. Cork was a nightmare on this one, dried out and disintegrated on opening. However this did not impact the wine, lots of depth and complexity and surprisingly not overly sweet for the classification. very much a balanced Auslese. Quite resolved with honey and sherry notes, probably a good time to drink up compared to the 2009 I had earlier this year which was still very youthful.
