Introduction

WSET 2 reunion tasting with some additional guests. Also to finally show the new wine cellar

The wines were tasted blind in pairs. Each pair had some sort of relation

Flight 1 - Bourgogne? (2 notes)

The first time I tasted this Assyrtiko I could have mistaken it for a Chassagne

White
2018 Argyros Assyrtiko Cuvée Monsignori Greece, Aegean, Cyclades, Santorini
flawed
When opening the bottle for tonights tasting I did not notice, but after decanting it felt weird. It smells like sweaty feet, old and damp cellar. Some fruit (grapefruit, lime) came through, but nothing like the previous bottle.
White
2015 Domaine Jacques Prieur Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
93 points
Opened for 3 hours, then decanted for two hours. Deep lemon with a golden hue. Medium+ intensity that starts of with some mint and then follows with toast, smoke, lemon, minerality, white peach, mango and even some banana (warm vintage). Comparable on the palat with also some white chocolate. Medium+ acidity, long finish.

First bottle of three. Big, bold and beautiful. Nr 2 or 3 of the night for most people, nr 2 for me

Flight 2 - Old Chenin (2 notes)

White
2005 Nicolas Joly Clos de la Coulée de Serrant France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Savennières-Coulée de Serrant
94 points
Opened 5 hours in advance, no decanting. Deep golden. Kept developing over the night and even the following days. Started of with an oxidative apple juice, bruised yellow apple, linoleum, sherry, nutty, marmelade bitter, elderflower, honey. Very long finish. On day 2 even more integrated. Spectacular and my WOTN, as it was for most people
White
2003 Ken Forrester Chenin Blanc The FMC South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch
92 points
Slow oxed for 4 hours. Deep golden in color. Toast, butterscotch, butter, yellow apple, dried apricot, candied orange, caramel, dried fruit, white chocolate. Medium+ acidity, long finish. Still alive on day 4 and not declining. Should continue to live on for at least 5-10 years. Still 2 bottles

Not as blown away as a year ago, but still very, very good. The Coulee de Serrant 2005 over-classed this wine, but that is nothing to be ashamed of. Again, a great experience to drink such an old Chenin and at €25/bottle (in 2019) amazing QPR.

Flight 3 - European Pinot Noir (2 notes)

Red
2012 De Tarczal Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT Italy, Trentino Alto-Adige / Veneto, Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT
89 points
Slow oxed for 4 hours. Light ruby. Black and red currant, some spices, green bell pepper, medicinal. Showing some age, but not the 10 years it has. Overall a bit too shallow. Medium- tannins, medium- finish
Red
2017 Pierre Girardin Nuits St. Georges France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges
91 points
Slow oxed for 4 hours. Light ruby with a hint of purple. Medium+ intensity wit a lovely combination of fruit (black currant, blue berry, with more air more towards red fruit (strawberry, red cherry)), elegant oak and some flint & spices. Medium acidity, long finish. On day 2 more red fruit driven with almost strawberry ice like finish.

Positively surprised by this village cuvee by PVG, this has a lot of upward potential. 5 more bottles in the cellar

Flight 4 - Old (2 notes)

Red
1985 Château Léoville Las Cases France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
flawed
This bottle was so far over the hill that I consider it flawed. Only tertairy notes; walnuts, coffee, meat, leather, dried vigs, maggi, potpourri
Red
2001 Bodegas Pintia Toro Pintia Spain, Castilla y León, Toro
93 points
Bold, deep and lovely. Cherries, oak, clove, hint of mint, leather, BBQ. Medium+ tannins, long finish. Still great, at peak (or just behind)

Flight 5 - Syrah vs. Shiraz (2 notes)

Red
2009 Domaine Yves Cuilleron Côte-Rôtie Bourasseau France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
91 points
Slightly underwhelmed by this wine and at €149 not a great PQR either. Flint, eucalyptus, chocolate, coffee, leather, meaty, some VA and a hint of green.
Red
2012 Penfolds Shiraz Magill Estate Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Adelaide Plains
92 points
Deep purple. Black cherries, tea, ceder, smoke, a lot of fruit. Long finish. Especially the nose is deep and broody, the palate does not completely live up the expectations set by the nose
