DP 2004 P2 Release party (maybe the third one?)

Caviar Russe

Tasted October 25, 2022 by MC2 Wines with 95 views

Introduction

I understand that there have been a number of events to celebrate the new 2004 DP over the last few days. This I think was the last one. A great set-up. For some reason I've not spent any time with Caviar Russe and that's probably a miss. For sure there's a reason caviar and champagne are meant to go together.

Flight 1 - Opening pour (1 note)

White - Sparkling
2010 Dom Pérignon Champagne France, Champagne
From a magnum. One of the folks at the tasting asked why this bottle might be so different than the one they'd tried over the summer that they didn't quite like and Vincent was quite to say magnum. It is almost always better out of large format. Drinks well. Light and crisp and a bit of brioche.

The star of the show. After a very tough 2003 with lots of issues early in the growing season and then extreme heat the idea is that much of the extra nutrients that the vine got later in that growing season really showed up in '04 so it was a large crop and a healthy crop. For me '04 DP has been one you can think to drink earlier than some other years, but then I struggle with the QPR of it. This is similar to the 'little' brother in that it's very light and easy. Some spice. Opens over time. It's a nicely done wine and for a DP very accessible and with a bit of time in the glass interesting almost immediately.

Most everyone's favorite of the tasting. It was a tough year for Chardonnay and so there is more Pinot here than in other years. Lots of verve and spicy and maybe darker notes but what stands out the most is that verve and energy in the glass. Makes me think this could be interesting in some years.

Not immediately but this probably ended up being my favorite of the three. It's getting some age notes - a bit more toast and a bit more evolved. Drinks very well. Soft and easy drinking and still of course on the younger side but it's a hint secondary.

Flight 3 - Bonus Bottle (1 note)

Rosé - Sparkling
2008 Dom Pérignon Champagne Rosé France, Champagne
The winner of the group but I'm just partial to this wine which is really pretty special. Fun to have had it twice in a week! Bonus bottle. Bright red fruits and lots of energy and generally drinking really well. It's young and has many years to go but it's a very nice wine.

Closing

All the wines a bit younger but with some good potential. The 2008 Dom Rose stole the show I think but the 2003 DP P2 was quite good and honestly the 2000 DP P2 surprised me with how well it was showing.
