Introduction
Bordeaux 2020 Arrivage tasting. Key observations: 1/ Tannins were generally soft and well-integrated, but still left room for structure, 2/ fruit generally ripe and well-defined, no over-extraction, 3/ all appellation were showing great, but if I had to pick out then it would be Paulliac, 4/ top wines were Petit Village (completely unexpected, 97) and Lynch Bages (96).
In addition to Petit Village and Lynch Bages, there was a strong field of runner-ups across all appellations such as SHL, Rauzan Ségla, both Pichon’s and Pape Clément Blanc. Among the bigger brands there were no real disappointments, although I felt Canon, La Conseillante were performing below their potential.

Tasting note:
Gooseberry fruit with a nice citrus layer, plenty of herbs and spices expand the nose. A fresh and crisp palate.

Tasting note:
Nicely defined gooseberry fruit, an array of floral notes, mineral accents. Palate was crisp but with texture to it. A bitterish aftertaste keeps me from going higher.

2020 Château Smith Haut Lafitte

Bordeaux 2020 Arrivage tasting. Key observations: 1/ Tannins were generally soft and well-integrated, but still left room for structure, 2/ fruit generally ripe and well-defined, no over-extraction, 3/ all appellation were showing great, but if I had to pick out then it would be Paulliac, 4/ top wines were Petit Village (completely unexpected, 97) and Lynch Bages (96).
Tasting note:
Wow. Well-extracted, intense fruit of cherry, blueberry and bramble berry embedded in earthy and barnyard notes. Pencil shavings. Less of a herbal character than I’ve found to be signature for this estate. Lots of structure, but with soft tannin. Did feel a bit of heat which was the only weak spot, otherwise impeccable balance. A fantastic SHL.

2020 Domaine de Chevalier
France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
Bordeaux 2020 Arrivage tasting. Key observations: 1/ Tannins were generally soft and well-integrated, but still left room for structure, 2/ fruit generally ripe and well-defined, no over-extraction, 3/ all appellation were showing great, but if I had to pick out then it would be Paulliac, 4/ top wines were Petit Village (completely unexpected, 97) and Lynch Bages (96).
Tasting note:
More blueberry type of fruit with dried herbs, leather and barnyard on the side. Seemingly a darker aroma profile compared to SHL. Nice intensity, but lacking a bit the sweet and ripe fruit. The palate was pretty wild, grasping for balance.

2020 Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion
France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
Bordeaux 2020 Arrivage tasting. Key observations: 1/ Tannins were generally soft and well-integrated, but still left room for structure, 2/ fruit generally ripe and well-defined, no over-extraction, 3/ all appellation were showing great, but if I had to pick out then it would be Paulliac, 4/ top wines were Petit Village (completely unexpected, 97) and Lynch Bages (96).
Tasting note:
Pretty unique and distinct, once again breaking ranks in the appellation. Dark cherry fruit, herbs and peppery spices. The palate extends into a long finish with both breadth and depth.
Red
2020 Château Léoville Barton
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
Dark cherry and black currant fruit, layering graphite, spice and dried herbal notes on top. The palate leans to the acidity side of things. Tannins are soft but maybe just a tad unripe. Compared to Poyferré, this was the more opulent wine. But on balance another strong Barton – you just can’t go wrong with this one.

2020 Château Léoville Poyferré
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
Ripe, on balance slightly more red cherry fruit, earthy base notes and floral high notes. Elements of sweet spice and dried herbs. Palate still pretty wild and a tad rustic, but still came across a more elegant and precise than Barton even thought the latter was more layered.
Red
2020 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
Bordeaux 2020 Arrivage tasting. Key observations: 1/ Tannins were generally soft and well-integrated, but still left room for structure, 2/ fruit generally ripe and well-defined, no over-extraction, 3/ all appellation were showing great, but if I had to pick out then it would be Paulliac, 4/ top wines were Petit Village (completely unexpected, 97) and Lynch Bages (96).
Tasting note:
Deep and concentrated with a dark berry fruit core extending into depths of dried herbs, black tea, bitter chocolate. Sparkled floral notes of violets and sweet spice. Lots of tension and even if this is brutally young, the structure was amazing with seamless tannin integration.
Red
2020 Château Lynch-Bages
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
Bordeaux 2020 Arrivage tasting. Key observations: 1/ Tannins were generally soft and well-integrated, but still left room for structure, 2/ fruit generally ripe and well-defined, no over-extraction, 3/ all appellation were showing great, but if I had to pick out then it would be Paulliac, 4/ top wines were Petit Village (completely unexpected, 97) and Lynch Bages (96).
Tasting note:
Polished nose, expressive and intense, producing rich flavors of dark cherry, black currant, mineral notes of smoke and graphite. Quickly adding floral layers, too. The texture is velvety in nature, the tannins are grippy and slightly mouthcoating tannin but expertly built in. After 2015, 2016 and even 2017 another (more than) lovely young LB.
Red
2020 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
Bordeaux 2020 Arrivage tasting. Key observations: 1/ Tannins were generally soft and well-integrated, but still left room for structure, 2/ fruit generally ripe and well-defined, no over-extraction, 3/ all appellation were showing great, but if I had to pick out then it would be Paulliac, 4/ top wines were Petit Village (completely unexpected, 97) and Lynch Bages (96).
Tasting note:
Nicely floral with a sweet cherry fruit, earth and elements of dried herbs. Compared to Pichon Baron and Lynch Bages, in comparison the fruit was fresher, less extracted and sweeter. This translated seamlessly to the palate. Detailed and precise, but maybe lacking quite the depth of the other two mentioned. Hard to pick a favorite.
Red
2020 Château Canon-la-Gaffelière
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Came across a bit reductive at first, red cherry and raspberry fruit in a very sweet style but showing little else at this point. Palate was fresh and juicy with hardly perceptible tannin. An enjoyable but simple wine that should be early-drinking – but not sure about the aging potential.

2020 Château La Gaffelière
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Bordeaux 2020 Arrivage tasting. Tasting note:
An intense, fruit-forward bouquet of ripe red cherry with additional layers of spice, floral notes and laced with mineral accents. Super structure with tension, a full body, soft tannins and commanding acidity. A more imposing and dominant wine than the 2019.
Red
2020 Château Larcis Ducasse
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Bordeaux 2020 Arrivage tasting. Tasting note:
Red and blue berries, mixed forest berries, defining graphite notes and peppery spice. Well-structured and round palate in perfect harmony.
Red
2020 Château Petit Village
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
Bordeaux 2020 Arrivage tasting. Key observations: 1/ Tannins were generally soft and well-integrated, but still left room for structure, 2/ fruit generally ripe and well-defined, no over-extraction, 3/ all appellation were showing great, but if I had to pick out then it would be Paulliac, 4/ top wines were Petit Village (completely unexpected, 97) and Lynch Bages (96).
Tasting note:
This was a huge underdog surprise. This was not on my to-do list until a fellow wine enthusiast pointed it out. Intense and abundantly spicy with sweet Christmas spices, a ripe fruit of red and dark cherry, liquorish and dried plum. Incredibly versatile. The palate is deep, bold yet harmonious and builds a bitter sweet flavor profile, also adding cigar box notes.
Red
2020 Château Clinet
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
Bordeaux 2020 Arrivage tasting. Key observations: 1/ Tannins were generally soft and well-integrated, but still left room for structure, 2/ fruit generally ripe and well-defined, no over-extraction, 3/ all appellation were showing great, but if I had to pick out then it would be Paulliac, 4/ top wines were Petit Village (completely unexpected, 97) and Lynch Bages (96).
Tasting note:
Ripe red cherry fruit, mineral notes of graphite, floral elements, cedar wood and earth. Velvety texture, fresh and fruity with a long finish and adding darker cherries to the mix on the palate. Solid, nice complexity, but not quite the homerun like 2019 I found.
Red
2020 Château La Conseillante
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
Bordeaux 2020 Arrivage tasting. Key observations: 1/ Tannins were generally soft and well-integrated, but still left room for structure, 2/ fruit generally ripe and well-defined, no over-extraction, 3/ all appellation were showing great, but if I had to pick out then it would be Paulliac, 4/ top wines were Petit Village (completely unexpected, 97) and Lynch Bages (96).
Tasting note:
Unlike all other wines, this one spent around 20min in the decanter. Sweet spices and leather complement a mostly red cherry fruit. On the palate tannins felt a bit rough and the acidity was perceptibly high, didn‘t really convey ideal balance.
Red
2020 Château Canon
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Bordeaux 2020 Arrivage tasting.
Compared to the rest of the wines this one appeared closed, exhibiting rather low intensity. Fruit flavors of red cherries and strawberry, earthy base notes and graphite. There was explicit floral or perfume layer, but that came across a bit soapy. The palate was fresh and juicy, showed tangible tannin and had a nice and sweet pipe tobacco aftertaste.
Red
2020 Château Rauzan-Ségla
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
Bordeaux 2020 Arrivage tasting. Key observations: 1/ Tannins were generally soft and well-integrated, but still left room for structure, 2/ fruit generally ripe and well-defined, no over-extraction, 3/ all appellation were showing great, but if I had to pick out then it would be Paulliac, 4/ top wines were Petit Village (completely unexpected, 97) and Lynch Bages (96).
Tasting note:
Another beguiling and inviting Rauzan boasting a sweet red cherry fruit, earthy aromas, fruit tea and black tea. Fresh and juicy palate with a velvety texture. A third strong vintage for this estate in a row, more or less on a par with 2019 in my view, but not quite the showstopper like 2018.
Red
2020 Château Gruaud Larose
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
Ripe cherry, earth and spice. A mostly fresh and fruity nose, well-defined even if simple. Tannin perfectly integrated which provided for a nice mouth feel. I would describe this as mostly classic, but without any distinctive features – hence my rather low score.

2020 Château Talbot
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
Started off reductive, rather dark fruit of bramble berry, marzipan and mineral notes. The palate was then surprisingly light and fresh. Quite unique and standing out in this vintage tasting. But didn’t have quite the structure to it and aromas were more blurry than linear and precise. On its own maybe a viable choice, but next to the bigger guns this came across somewhat skinny.
Red
2020 Château Grand-Puy Ducasse
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
Bordeaux 2020 Arrivage tasting. Key observations: 1/ Tannins were generally soft and well-integrated, but still left room for structure, 2/ fruit generally ripe and well-defined, no over-extraction, 3/ all appellation were showing great, but if I had to pick out then it would be Paulliac, 4/ top wines were Petit Village (completely unexpected, 97) and Lynch Bages (96).
Tasting note:
There was a lactic touch to it that proved quite distracting. Ripe red cherry and notes of perfume. A wild palate, somewhat rustic with an acidity imbalance.
Red
2020 Château Phélan Ségur
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
A solid Phélan with red cherry fruit complemented by smoky and cedar wood notes. As the nose, the palate was simple a bit one-dimensional, but with an admittedly nice texture.
Red
2020 Château Balestard La Tonnelle
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Bordeaux 2020 Arrivage tasting.
Sweet red berry, mineral notes of smoke and pencil shavings. A nice bouquet overall, followed by a simple but also nice palate. Why not if the purse feels a bit light?
Red
2020 Château Pape Clément
France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
Bordeaux 2020 Arrivage tasting. Key observations: 1/ Tannins were generally soft and well-integrated, but still left room for structure, 2/ fruit generally ripe and well-defined, no over-extraction, 3/ all appellation were showing great, but if I had to pick out then it would be Paulliac, 4/ top wines were Petit Village (completely unexpected, 97) and Lynch Bages (96).
Tasting note:
Ripe, well-extracted red cherry fruit, sugar-coated berries and sweet spices. A fresh and fruity, round and well balanced palate. Another solid Pape Clément that impressively showcases the softer touch in the winemaking in the post-Parker era: less extraction, less new oak but instead more emphasis on elegance and precision. 94+

2020 Château Pape Clément Blanc
France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
Bordeaux 2020 Arrivage tasting. Key observations: 1/ Tannins were generally soft and well-integrated, but still left room for structure, 2/ fruit generally ripe and well-defined, no over-extraction, 3/ all appellation were showing great, but if I had to pick out then it would be Paulliac, 4/ top wines were Petit Village (completely unexpected, 97) and Lynch Bages (96).
Tasting note:
Clearly the outstanding white in this small sample with a unique and precise bouquet of nectarine, gooseberry and passion fruit. Creamy texture along with fresh acidity keeps the palate interesting.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2020 Château Suduiraut
France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
Bordeaux 2020 Arrivage tasting. Key observations: 1/ Tannins were generally soft and well-integrated, but still left room for structure, 2/ fruit generally ripe and well-defined, no over-extraction, 3/ all appellation were showing great, but if I had to pick out then it would be Paulliac, 4/ top wines were Petit Village (completely unexpected, 97) and Lynch Bages (96).
Tasting note:
Signature saffron notes, candid fruit, dried apricot, fresher peach and spice. Densely built, tight, creamy and viscous palate adding honey notes. A promising Suduiraut, even if too chewy at this stage.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2020 Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey
France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
Bordeaux 2020 Arrivage tasting. Key observations: 1/ Tannins were generally soft and well-integrated, but still left room for structure, 2/ fruit generally ripe and well-defined, no over-extraction, 3/ all appellation were showing great, but if I had to pick out then it would be Paulliac, 4/ top wines were Petit Village (completely unexpected, 97) and Lynch Bages (96).
Tasting note:
An compelling nose with dried and candid fruit but also more fresh elements, a herbal touch and chamomile. While this was a nice juxtaposition to the more candid profile of Suduiraut, the palate was similarly viscous with lots of honey aroma.
