Introduction

A look at Vosne Romanee 1er Cru with a village thrown in between 2007 and 1999

Flight 1 - 3 producers, 3 vintages (3 notes)

Red
2007 Domaine Michel Gros Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Clos des Réas France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
87 points
Light ruby. Pongy, funky game note (hint of Brett), touch reductive then later more perfume of sweet red cherry and strawberry. Crisp acidity, rather sweet cherry, boiled sweet fruit, slightly sticky texture, some delicacy but finished with a coarser chalky tannin.
Red
2004 Domaine Jean Grivot Vosne-Romanée France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée
88 points
Bright crimson red, particular modern vivid fruit style with effervescent perfume, bordering on baked strawberries and raspberries. Very ripe with lively acidity, richly textured with noted attributes of crushed rocks, minerals cherry drops. A little hard with drying tannins at the finish and medium length suggest more village than 1er cru but has power and perhaps needs time.
Red
2002 Domaine Michel Gros Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Clos des Réas France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
88 points
Pale ruby with browning orange rim suggesting some age. Penetrating nose with a touch of herb, 5 spice and red plum/strawberry and later raspberry fruit. Fresh almost brusque acidity offset by sumptuous texture and mineral component. Elegant yet medium length and a little thin and a touch of Brett distracted.

Flight 2 - 3 * 2006 and 1 * 2009, various producers, Les Suchot & Les Beaux Monts (4 notes)

Red
2006 Jacques Cacheux & Fils Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
89 points
Youthful light ruby cherry red. Intensely perfumed, bright with red cherry, ripe plum. Very appealing, plump, with a sumptuous texture, with a firm cherry skin tannin, breadth of fruit. Needs time, touch drying on back palate with wood spices dominating. surprisingly elegant and rather charming without depth of a top wine.
Red
2006 Domaine Daniel Rion et Fils Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Chaumes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
87 points
Light to medium cerise. Intense concentrated strawberry fruit on nose. Savoury styling, cherry skin texture, quite rich/luxuriant, with poise. Firm, slightly austere tannins and spicy. A gutsy wine with a sensual element yet a touch drying on the back palate.
Red
2006 Nicolas Potel Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
87 points
Light to medium crimson. Strong marmite, mineral nose along with strawberries. Palate reflects with more raspberry and red plum and a dry chalky texture and muscular firmness although it is a little dilute in the mid-palate.
Red
2009 Domaine Daniel Rion et Fils Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
91 points
Light, bright crimson. A vivid cherry nose with ripe intense flavours suggests a very young wine. Lots of spicy new vanilla oak, which is yet to integrate. Modern styling, sensual, creamy texture with a fantastic concentration of fruit flavour. Fine tannins, excellent tight wine, but approachable without intricate detail.

Flight 3 - Older vintages from Les Suchets (2 notes)

Red
2002 J. Confuron-Cotetidot Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
85 points
Light to medium ruby. Slight Pong, savoury, developed characters, sous-Bois, 5 spice with crushed rocks and cough syrup. A little sinewy, lacking focus, and fuzzy with a drying tannin suggesting a lesser vintage. Very high acidity, short-medium finish with an odd coffee bean aftertaste.
Red
1999 Alain Hudelot-Noëllat Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
88 points
Light dull maroon. Tertiary characters of sous-Bois, forest floor, medicinal as well as cough syrup and cherry/strawberry aromas. Rich, sensual texture with freshness, minerals and red fruits, yet a little lean with firm, chewy tannins. Masculine style but lacks complexity and touch of Brett on the finish distracts. Pity, hard to score.
